    Michael Vink became a pro cyclist in one year. The 31 year old had always dreamed of a pro contract but that dream seemed to be slipping away as he aged. In a 12 month period he was able to go from amateur to pro cyclist.

    Nobody, but someone who has done it, can truly understand the madness of riding in a pack of 170 highly tuned, highly focused athletes. Vink is obv a monster, but his mentality to be in the thick of it is the difference maker. Love the pod

    This is an interesting story and thanks for bringing it to the public. I just want to add that Jay Vine did belong to the Australian team Nero Bianchi so he was doing road racing before he sprang to fame in e-racing. He wasn’t just an e-racer who had the power numbers.

    One of Kelly’s books comes to mind “Hunger” …. their lifestyle is crazy and the bubble they live in needs so much sacrifice that you just need to need and want it so much. We admire their speed etc but the dedication involved is so so much a part of it all. They really are unique people. Great interview.

    Micheal has always been an outstanding cyclist, I don't think that anyone who knows him or has followed his career is surprised he made world tour, he definitely deserves it. I hope UAE give him some opportunities to race for the win.

    MV is an incredible talent. Great to see him in the Wt. Remember him as an 18yr old going solo in the Nat champs and being out front alone for 10 of the 12? laps on a tough course with Wt riders in field. Crashing is all wrong place wrong time, and the way you fall and how fast you're going. From personal experience over 50kph you can do serious damage to yourself if you can't roll out the forces involved.

    • @TheRoadmanPodcast
      @TheRoadmanPodcast  Před 10 měsíci

      I hadn’t realised he was such a talent rider so young. Did he take a break from the sport ?

    • @swites
      @swites Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@TheRoadmanPodcast No I don't think so. He did go to Europe etc but for whatever reason wasn't quite able to get that big contract. Which I think is often right place right time, or be given that big break, or opportunity. He was always a standout rider in the NZ scene and always that rider that one knew deserved to be in the Wt as he was that good. So great to see him finally make it :)

    Not so crazy that this is the new place where a pro team might discover talent. usa cycling certainly isn't doing the US any favors by building a quality cycling program. Not sure what they are doing with all their money, but it's not growing cycling talent at the regional level.

    Interesting podcast however it's very clear that the title is just for the clicks since it's not like he bought his first roadbike and began riding and became pro i one year, no he rode multiple years before that.

    How does an amateur become a pro cyclist in one year? Simple. The Lance Armstrong doping program.
