Actually, scientifically speaking, it's easier to hit a bouncer than a pitch that doesn't hit the ground (short of slow pitches). The real thing that makes transitioning from baseball to Cricket hard, from a batter's perspective, is that the ball can be pitched/bowled anywhere, including at the batter. THAT'S the hard part. Baseball batters are used to a certain style of batting that goes out the window in cricket.
In baseball, what makes it difficult for a cricketer to transition into baseball batting is the existence of the foul lines, the round bat, and the different styles of pitches. Throwing straight and hard (all fastballs) won't take a pitcher very far in the Major Leagues. A successful pitcher needs a few more pitches. The GREAT pitchers have pinpoint control. Many great hitters have been made to look foolish due to mixing pitches, speeds, and locations.

Mark Heithaus Actually, what you said about Bowlers is wrong, cricket bowlers have mastered swing and can easily change the trajectory of the ball in mid flight.
Watch one of DJ bravo's slow balls. He balls low full toss balls that curve down the wicket like a baseball slider. So no, I think Cricket bowlers can easily adapt because they know how to change the trajectory of the balls even without the bounce.

"Rarely find players who are not well built or big"...Jose Altuve is possibly the best player in the game this year and is 5 foot 6 inches. There are tons of baseball players who are overweight (CC Sabathia, Prince Fielder, even Babe Ruth) that are/were amazing players. Now, I have very little knowledge of cricket to say which one has more skill, but idk why all the baseball hate. They are similar in some ways and completely different in others. Think of baseball as America's big middle finger to the English since we knew how much they loved cricket so we invented a sport to replace it and become the 'national pastime' just to piss them off.

SuperWaffleSuperSyrup actually it’s not bullshit at all. Just because Americans only care about money doesn’t mean that’s the whole worlds attitude. Cricket and rugby have shown greatly countless examples of players accepting little to no money to play for their country or county. Plus I’m talking about a whole sport , moving sports and countries isn’t always worth the money specially, if it means moving to America. And despite what you think not everyone dreams of living in the states. If you hint cricketers are not playing in the mlb because they can’t then you are not very smart or you just know fuck all about cricket and cricket players.

But cricket players play for the love of the sport and their country. They are not as creedy(as most non Americans are). They g t paid perfectly fine and well in cricket and that’s enough for them to stay with the better sport. Plus athletes are all about challenge, why play an easier sport for more one year you don’t need? People have more class and respect for themselves than to play baseball when they are already good at baseballs more difficult cousin cricket

Ironically, the most popular ball game in America, well into the 19th century, was cricket. The city of Philadelphia alone had more than 90 cricket clubs.
Things really started changing after the Civil War because of Britain’s support for the Confederacy and some enthusiastic championing of baseball by figures like Walt Whitman.
Also the huge influx of Irishmen into the game, with their usual Anglophobia, made a marked difference.
By the start of the 20th century baseball totally dominated and cricket was all but forgotten.
Now the only cricket you see in the USA are informal games played by immigrants and students from the Indian subcontinent.

As an American, I played baseball competitively for 15 years up to the college level. I had the opportunity to play some pretty competitive cricket while living in England and enjoyed it quite a lot. While the hand eye coordination it takes is similar between the two, there aren't many skills that you could point to that would determine which is more difficult since the strategies of each game are so different. I found the nuances of cricket to be just as challenging and fun as baseball. The only real differences I'd say is the speed of the ball and size of the bat when batting. In baseball, it is pretty common at the amateur level to face good pitchers throwing anywhere from 85 to 90 mph. In cricket, to find those kinds of bowling speeds you'd have to be at the professional level. Plus, in baseball as a batter you don't have any protective gear except for a helmet with no face mask. So there is a certain safety factor you have to overcome when facing someone pitching above 95 mph, which is very common the higher up the ranks you go. Almost every team at the pro level in baseball has a pitcher who consistently hits speeds around 100 mph. Mind you, this is from a shorter distance than in cricket. In the end, if you enjoy playing baseball, you will likely enjoy playing cricket and vice versa.

    • @aryan_bhat
      @aryan_bhat Před 2 lety +17

Well, it's easy to reach speeds of 100 mph when you're bending your elbow aka chucking in cricket terminology. Moreover, the baseball ⚾ is lighter and softer than a cricket ball, so a good protective gear is a must.

@@philmccracken179 The general rule of cricket is, you touch the ball and you are out, you don't touch the ball you are out. That's how it's in international games. The ball once pitched can have infinite variation and that only means you have infinite chances of getting yourself out. The only place you should allow the ball to touch your bat is the middle of the bat and you have to somehow very accurately send it inbetween the fielders such that it reaches a boundary or you can get a run. If you swing the bat like a blind man, the first ball will come at 90 mph and say you got lucky, the next ball will just have a variation of about 5 mph that's bowled at 85mph and that will give make not touch the middle of the "surfboard", it'll just touch it at the edge or what not and instead of flying off the thing will be flying up within the ground and you will be taken. Or you will get a ball that will decimate your legs at 95 mph and hit all the three stumps. That's just two really rudimentary ways to get someone out.
There's a reason the sport is called game of angles. Its all about sending the ball in the right direction using its own momentum, but instead if you try to put your own energy in there's a Very good chance you will get yourself out very easily. It takes a lot of skill to hit the ball the right way.

Complete ignorance on the part of Cricket fans. It's a necessity that pitchers in baseball throw a wide variety of pitches , each one of which has a slightly different velocity, trajectory, movement and/or arm angle. These variations are introduced to confuse the batter in various ways, and ultimately aid the defensive team in getting the batter or baserunners out. The 12 most common are: Fastballs: Four-seam, Two-seam, Cutter, Splitter, and Forkball. Breaking Balls: Curveball, Slider, Slurve, and Screwball. Changeups: Changeup, Palmball, and Circle Changeup.

An honest man! You know Baseball, but you prefer Cricket. Many commenters on both sides know little about the sport they're bashing - and I was one of them.
I'm too old to play either sport now, but I can see better the skills and strategy required to play Cricket. And I know I'm just scratching the surface. With the knowledge I've gained recently, I can put my imagination to work. Playing simple Cricket apps help too.
I noted that you prefer T20 format. I learned that's the most recent format (2002?) and it brings a match in line with an over-long Baseball game - 3 hours. That's huge! Most Baseball fans don't know Cricket has evolved. We have our issues with slow-paced Baseball games.

jeez everyone in these comments needs to chill. I'm a high school baseball player and I tried cricket one day when I was 13-14 and I'd say they're both great sports. Obviously I had to get get used to hitting a bouncing pitch, but eventually it became easy. Not saying cricket is easier than baseball, but they're honestly pretty similar. There are things that make each sport easier and harder than the other but. Reading a bounce is pretty similar to picking up an offspeed in baseball and I get cricket pitchers can throw anywhere but all a batter really needs to do is make contact where as in baseball you have to hit the ball hard. Judging by this comment section someone's gonna come at me saying cricket is way harder or something and to them I say to step in the box against Jacob Degrom and I also tell the baseball players to step in against a good cricket bowler before ranting about which sport is better

4.Bowling options of different type of bowlers like pace, medium pace or spin(not to mention different types of balls these types of bowlers can bowl)
    5.Fielding positions
6.Powerplays (which can restrict points 3,4,5)
7.Strategic use of review system (as there are only 3 uses)
8.Taking into account the possibilily of implementation of rules to restrict the no of overs in the game due to unforseen events like rain or light
I donno if baseball has any other distinct strategies other than those relating to fielding positions, batting and pitching.....
I will never state that cricket is better than baseball...just want to state that both games are completely different and needs different skill sets to play...

This is not more strategy, when the sport is less efficient and disorganized. Is there more strategy in a boxing match or a local bar fight? Cricket is the bar fight.

With cricket, batsmen get a chance to get their eye in. They can play defensively and block deliveries until they're ready or they get a bad ball. In baseball, you only get one shot and you've got to make it count. I played both sports as a kid and that's what I found hard about baseball.

As a cricket fan who embraced the ODI’s I feel cricket is killing itself trying to invent new ways to compete with itself. The bigger the push towards shorter versions of the game since the inception of T20 I have gone the other way and now only really have an interest for the purest form of cricket, Test matches. The chase for money is making some rich and destroying once powerful cricketing nations because they can not prevent their Star players chasing the massive contracts that T20 franchises can offer.

As an American who has played both sports I can say cricket is more physical and baseball is more mental. There is a lot this video doesn't explain about the intricacies of both sports. The only thing the two sports have in common is you hit a ball with a stick. They are very different. Saying one is better than the other is nonsense.

I think you’re wrong. Cricket is a complete mind game. The best cricketer plan their innings and then play. It’s all about the batsman anticipating what the bowler will do and vice versa. Some cricketers like Dravid and Sachin play such terrific mind games that they get the bowlers to do exactly what they want them to do. And the best bowlers get the batsmen to play exact shots which they intended...they set the fielders in the exact positions and they get the batsmen to hit the ball straight into the fielders hands. It’s a crazy mind game. In fact baseball is more of a hit the ball and run game. There’s no sinister mind games happening. there’s no contest between the bowler and then he batter where the batsmen leave the good balls and hit the bad ones or play cheeky shots which result in boundaries. Some times the batsmen simple nudge a fast ball and use the speed of the ball to their advantage. They simply let it slide over the bat. You can’t do that in baseball. In fact test cricket is a highly mental game because is lasts for 5 consecutive days. It drains you physically and mentally but you gotta keep your wits for 5 days and then win the match. I’m not trying to be mean...but cricket in all seriousness is a far superior sport.

I think you have a misconception of what MDA was, my friend. You see, we as Americans believed that since India is a nation of over 1 billion people and your country is full of young bowlers, that we could tap into this and see if they could become quality pitchers. We as Americans don't really care if anyone else plays baseball despite the fact that more countries do all the time

I think a better way to gauge cricket batting versus baseball batting is for professional cricketing and professional baseball to swap, say, five "typical" batters each, spend a few weeks teaching them the ins and out of batting within their respective sporst, and then see what happens in a real, professional setting.
