  • Superstar Barbie 1977 Reproduction Doll - A Childhood Controversy. I was 10 when this doll originally came out and it was a very difficult adjustment, LOL!
Welcome to My World! My pronouns are she/her and I am a 53 year old mom who believes no matter how old we get, we never need to grow up! I rule here and it's all about dolls, speaking from the heart about real life and trying to shine some light into the world. I make really long videos becasue I feel like I am hanging out with my friends. So get some snacks and enjoy!
I collect Barbie, Monster High, Ever After High, Rainbow High, LOL OMG, Na Na Na Surprise, Disney Princess Dolls and so many more! I love fashion dolls and I believe that dolls are the best toys for people to improve empathy and to explore their creativity!

Thoughts and prayers with you, Melissa. Bless you for taking the time to play-for yourself, and to share with us. Your mom was a shining star in the “What the thrift” videos. Proving once again that you’re never too old to play (with toys, dolls, or with your friends and family). 💕💕

I turned 10 in 1985 - and my the first Barbie I remember getting for Christmas was Peaches and Cream Barbie... so to me the Superstar face is "THE" face. She was so stunning in that dress, that I had to hold my tears back! :) I do think the older ones look cool, but my heart will always belong to superstar Barbie, because she was the essence of my childhood. :) - and Melissa? Thank you for being just as silly and fun as I am at 47 now. Its nice to see someone like you - loving dolls too. :) Not many people understand the obsession! :D

I was born in 82 so the superstar Barbie/face is all that I knew. That was Barbie to me. I always thought the faces before her were not Barbie and looked weird. I guess it has a lot to do with when you were born and what you had as a child. I did just order her since I have the repro Christie too. Thinking of you and your Mom! Hugs.

I’m a 1982 baby too, and I actually got the special Christmas Barbie one Christmas or birthday, the one in the velvet forest/dark green dress with the red, white and green gems on the bodice. I had no idea at the time, I wish I had kept her in her box now!

I was born in 84, so the Superstar face with bent arms is my favorite type of Barbie. I guess most people don’t pose their arms right since they are supposed to rest on her hips or her hair, not like she’s carrying a tray. I love the face , it’s like a sweeter version of Farrah Fawcett, and I believe is the first Barbie made with long flowing wavy hair.

It’s so good to see you again, Melissa. Right now, with so much stress and sadness, it’s more important than ever to take a little time for yourself and do something else, like play with your dolls. I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s struggle, and yours as well, but it’s great you can spend time with her. So don’t worry about making videos; we’ll be here.
Now, I’m almost 43. To me, Superstar Barbie is Barbie. I love her face, even if it is a bit vapid looking. I wish Mattel would do more with the mold rather than use it for reproductions and retro collections. I think with a little imagination from a great artist she can be made to look modern. To me, she’s sweet and certainly more unique than Millie (not a fan!). I understand how change can upset some people. It rips you out of your comfort zone, and the older you get the harder it is to accept change. So maybe for someone Millie will always be Barbie. Maybe the original face will be Barbie, and that’s okay. I love them all because she is a reflection of our history and also a reflection of who we were as children.
Best of luck to you and lots of prayers for your mom and your family and you!

I was the same age when she came out, but I think I got her for my tenth birthday that November. It was totally the opposite for me. Superstar is who made me fall in love with Barbie. Up until then I mostly played with the Hasbro "World of Love" teen dolls. Barbie and Ken in the early 70s just looked "old" to me, even Malibu Barbie (though I did love my Malibu PJ), so they always played a mom and dad role to my other dolls. But Superstar Barbie and Superstar Ken became my all time favorites. And I had a good laugh at the I Dream of Jeannie comment--my sister I always pretended our Barbie's were genies because we loved that show so much! And thoughts and prayers about your mom. I've been there. It's not easy . My heart goes out to you.

Omg - I am in the UK and collect Sindy and remember when they changed her face in 1986 after 23 years... my heart quietly broke in the toy aisle as I gazed upon the new face.... hated it! So I totally relate to your story!

  • @ChadMarvelous
    @ChadMarvelous Před rokem +5

I totally understand what you're saying about the face molds. I feel like everybody has their favorite era for barbie, and it's usually the one that they grew up with in their childhood, or the one that made the greatest impact in their life. For me it was definitely the Superstar face mold, but not the 70s or 80s. The '90s Barbies were my absolute favorite. Those were the ones that I always wanted when I was a kid and was never allowed to have, and now that I'm an adult and have my own money I'm buying them off eBay for my collection. LOL. I think the generation girl face mold is very beautiful, but I wasn't into collecting dolls as much at that time, and of course today we have the Millie face sculpt and though I think she's pretty and I have nothing against her, I kind of feel the way about Millie the way that you were talking about the Superstar face mold how it's super generic.

This is so timely to see for me because my own grandmother I am guessing is around your own mother's age - or rather was as she just passed on the eighth of August - and our celebration of life ceremony for her will be in the morning. Hearing you talk about your mother always made me think of her and how hard it is to have to accept a love one's declining health and try to brace yourself for the inevitable. Sending lots of thoughts, prayers and good vibes your way 💕💕
As far as Barbie goes the original super star is a decade or so before my time so I don't have that particular memory but whichever headsculpt from the 90s that was used as the Jewel Girl doll is my own childhood 'barbie' face to me so I get that being such a shock at least lol.

Ok about Superstar Barbie… I BOUGHT THIS! I DID. I DID. I DID. I was born in 1975 and my earliest memory of my older sister, her friends, the babysitter’s daughter etc… they all had this Barbie. She was / is total disco 🪩 and a staple of the era! I’m not a Barbie aficionado but this one just takes me back and I love her 💕! I also loved Superstar Ken so perhaps he’ll get another release. I’m not sure, maybe it was the perceived Farrah Fawcett style or something… I agree and didn’t know Superstar Christie existed. Never knew that either 😢

I got my Superstar Barbie in 1977 for 9th birthday and I LOVED her so much!!! She was my favorite doll and still is to this day. I'm so excited they've brought her back because I have to get one. I thought she was very glamorous compared to the other dolls I had. I didn't have very many "barbie" barbies though. I didn't like all my dolls looking the same. I had a couple of malibu barbies and some skippers...all of my other dolls were Tuesday Taylor, Tiffany Taylor, Dusty dolls, Charlie's Angels dolls, Donny & Marie (Mattel though) Cher, Bionic woman and such. And most of the dolls, even Barbie, only came with bathing suits...no extra clothing. So when Superstar barbie came with the gown, boa and jewelry, I thought she was so glam! And I loved her new face....next to malibu barbie she was so much prettier. I even got the Supersize Superstar barbie (18 inch) for Christmas that year. Maybe you could do a video one day on the childhood dolls you had...that would be interesting. Prayers for you and your mom. ~Christie

I completely agree with you! I love the way the superstar barbie looks, and she looks SO GORGEOUS, but the face is just... meh. Also, I did NOT grow up in any of the early barbie eras, so I don't have that kind of attachment, but I do think that from just looking, the silkstone barbie's face or the older dolls in general, have a more fiercer face. I know it sounds weird, but with the half open/half closed eyes, the side glance, the pursed lips.. just radiates elegance lol. I am so sorry about what's happening with your mom, and I'm sending all the positive vibes and prayers. I'm happy to hear you are spending some time with her, and hopefully she will get better at some point. 🤧❤🙏 Thx for another great video. 🤗❤

I am 57 so a bit older. I grew up with the older Barbie and was in 7th grade (and still played with my Barbies) when SuperStar came out. I didn't like change then and try to not let my fear of change rule me now. My main Barbie was a blonde Barbie that was maybe 1969 with a tightly flipped up bob. My sister or cousin had Superstar and I grew to love the face mold. I started to refer to the older molds as monkey face Barbie with the pout.

I'm so sorry Melissa, it's times like these where it's not easy to impossible to be with loved ones ( thank you covid) especially in times when they are I'll or not 100%. I am very glad that restrictions have gone down and you have been able to visit your mom and have mother and daughter time, and enjoy each other's company. ( When things here in Seattle was very restricted we had a friend who we couldn't see very often. We had, had a falling out before covid and we're reconnecting when it hit. Even when quarantine was over and restrictions still limited things, we tried to hang out as much as we could. He had a heart attack last year and during this whole early days of this horrible plaque, we only had four or five get together events in a two to three year range. had covid not hit we may have had more time. So it hurt really bad when he past. I am glad restrictions aren't extreme for you and you can have as much time with your mom because covid didn't allow us, and it's twice as painful to not have that time with friends or loved ones who have been sick. So again I'm glad you both can see each other with little to no restrictions. I really love this reproduction, The hair color on the Christie one is so cool. I wish Mattel would revamp and reproduce all their dolls from the past, even the ones they already did and give people a second chance to get those, like the mod era Barbie set with Barbie, Christie and Stacey. Maybe some of the fashion packs too. A year of bringing classic Barbie back would be nice. To bring back memories of childhood, love and days long before covid was even thought of or ever existed. A time when the adult doll collectors were kids and had these dolls. I think it be a good idea and something to help many escape from the reality of a plaque that's possibly never going to go away and has caused so much pain. The memories and happiness is one thing it cannot take away.

I got Quick Curl Barbie, Malibu Ken, and Donnie and Marie Osmond (I loved their show. 😆) Eventually I let them go in a garage sale; Quick Curl was one of the only Barbies I had that was pre-Superstar. I bought a used Ballerina Barbie at a garage sale once, and a Malibu Skipper. But most of my Barbies have the Superstar face. Kissing Barbie and Tracy (the bride) didn't have that face but they shared the same mold. I stopped playing with Barbies when I was 12. I put all my dolls back in their original outfits (except for Golden Dream because her outfit unraveled -- thanks, Mattel!) and carefully stacked them in my doll cases. I haven't looked at them since. Even though I don't have room to display them, I think it's time they came home to live with me.

Those stands are very good for people who do stop motion for sure I like them a lot for that reason but I can understand for a collector it’s not the best choice

I had this barbie too as a kid, but since I'm younger then u I couldn't appreciate her the way u did so she was like expired, poor girl 😢 (her shoes immediately lost as well as her jewelry, her dress, boa and star shaped pedestal given to my neighbour and the doll probably was given away by my mom when I was growing up) so I re bought her, an original one (second hand ofc due to the hight prices) because I wanted to get back a toy of my childhood, but only a simple question (just asking), why you didn't got an original one instead of the repro? Btw I was in love with her pink shoes and her face to me it's unforgettable with the smile and her turquoise blue eyeshadow and the star shaped pedestal was amazing! 💖

I love Superstar Barbie. It was my first fashion doll ever. I had just moved to the US as a child and lost my heart to her. I was obsessed with her. I bought the original 77 doll as an adult after graduating from College and getting my fist job. I still have both, and love, love, love them. 💕

I was born in the 2000s so I used to find Barbies before that weird 😅 but they've grown on me and I love them now it made me know more about how Barbie was originally and I wish Mattel would make more reproductions of Mod-era Barbies and Kens I mean imagine reproductions of the talking Barbie and friends dolls, Ken had his first makeover in that line and Christie and Brad were introduced in that line too

You and your family are in my prayers. God bless your mom. My mother is in later stages of dementia. It’s hard to face these types of changes. All we can do is hold them close as possible and know the love we give is the best thing. I love collecting Barbie from the 70’s and 80’s originally but being a boy I had to be creative on how to get them. It wasn’t an acceptable situation as a boy back then for me in the south. Thank god she-ra broke the barrier some for me. But I had certain Barbie’s I obtained by helping relatives clean out garages and barns and secretly bought a tropical Teresa in 85 with allowance after riding my bike to Roses alone to get her…. I would flip out if my child did that today. No o e even knew I was gone most the day. The times were so different then

Since I was born in 1985 I am more attached to the 80’s and 90’s barbie dolls but I still very much enjoy the previous and original dolls. My sister who is older had this barbie but the dress was white, was there a white version too at some point?? I remember as a kid noticing her barbie doll looked somewhat different than most of mine but I could not fully realize why lol
Prayers for you and mom 🙏

I was born in 1989, so I grew up with the Superstar face mold for most of my childhood, but I never had many Barbies until they changed to the CEO/Generation Girl face mold in 1999. Before then, I owned more Teresas, Midges, and Kiras because I preferred their faces as a kid. I started to own more Barbies when they moved to the CEO face, but I "outgrew" dolls a few years later.

Love both the SilkStone and Superstar! Am biased for the Superstar mainly because as a very young child my mother would play with me with her old Barbies from the 70s-80s so that face is nostalgic to me especially about the good times with my mom.
Am thinking maybe the fact that you had other changes going on made it upsetting for you with the Barbie change. Not to seem rude but maybe you were struggling to adjust to the change of growing up and seeing Barbie change reinforced that idea to you?

I was also 10 in 1977 and had Super Star Barbie as well. My very first Barbies were from the Mod era when I was 2 years old, so I was already upset that they had changed her face to Malibu Barbie, who I thought was ugly beyond belief. When Sper Star came out, I was initially excited because the face was a major improvement over Malibu, and I loved her glamorous outfit (despite the fact that I really don’t like pink), and I marveled over her jewelry too. But I ended up HATING the perma-bent arms becoming they limited play and posing, and ended up not really liking the face very much either because it wasn’t nearly as pretty as the earlier “Barbera Eden”-esque look. Most of the Barbies I had from the late 70s-80s ended up given away or heavily modified. Last new dolls I bought were a few of the Rockers, and after that, it was only used/vintage until the early 2000s when better looking dolls started being made again.
I’m very sorry to hear about your mom. Many hugs to you both.

I was a 90s kid, so "the face" to me was the Generation Girl face. When her face eventually changed, I was so freaked out.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the Superstar face! So many people say this is their favorite face, but I just don't like it.
