After he passed, I drove my grandfather's black `76 Talisman for awhile. What a majestic beast! That car got washed more often than I did!! And yes--it had the Astro roof too!

That is the richest, purest and most beautiful blue colour and combination of blue in and out that I have ever seen.
Those back then engineers were sharp as whips and they new ergonomic luxury.

I keep staring at that back seat. It looks more comfortable than the most expensive mattress money can buy. I still remember a time when these could be seen sitting inside a used car lot on the seedy side of town. Now it's a collector's item, as it should be. That blue exterior color is extraordinary.

I remember those dark days during and for the years following the 73 oil crisis. I'm always careful not to use the word shortage. At 10 mpg, no one wanted beautiful, full-size American cars except me and a handful of Gearheads that wouldn't let go. I wanted to save them all. Eventually, things got better. The goal was accomplished. When we did finally get out of it, the price of gas jumped to over $3.00 a gallon and higher. Compared to under a dollar in most parts of the country. In my opinion, the crisis was staged to raise gas prices, but that's just me. Yes, it was a very dark time in America.

My in-laws owned a Talisman. An elderly couple, I drove them to evening events. I remember the Talisman drove like it was on rails. The engine seemed to be more than adequate, but it was riding in the backseat that I found to be a sublime space, quiet, and wrapped in comfort.
Magic carpet ride. You arrive so relaxed, like you’ve been sitting on an expensive sofa. No road noise or roughness… nothing like it today
I agree with you. But this why I'd like to test drive a, Genesis G90. From what I've seen and been able to tell, it's like a real Cadillac, like from back in the day of this Talisman.

The Escalade is the only "Cadillac" left.... the rest? Forget about it.... lovely Talisman for sure. I wouldn't have done the radio upgrade in order to keep it completely original. This car appears that it was extremely well cared for. It deserved to stay original.

As a boy I remember these beautiful cars. I wish I could go back. I don’t like the culture today nor the cars.
What a beautiful Talisman. I have a 1976 Fleetwood Brougham. I love it. No car being built today can match the comfort of these older Cadillacs on a long trip. Mine has been up Mount Washington in New Hampshire without any issues. If anything ever happens to mine, I will get another one. There is no other replacement.

Now that is luxury. I worked at a Buick/Oldsmobile dealership in 1976 in a town of 10,000. There was not a Cadillac dealership within 50 miles so we serviced many a Cadillac. The 1976 was my favorite Cadillac. I drove a few of them when they were new. I have never seen a 1976 Talisman.
I had a 1976 just like this one except mine was green with the green interior and white top. Mine was so rare it actually had the electronic fuel injection, the Trackmaster anti-lock brakes, and the air cushion restraint system. Those cars were literally ahead of their time. Mine belonged to the owner of a local Cadillac dealer and I purchased it from him
My uncle also had one with the air cushion restraint system which very few people opted for back then as hardly anyone bothered to wear seat belts back then. As a teenager I drove it a couple of times and it drove awesome.

@@bradparris99 I never crashed mine so I never knew it worked but I've read articles that people intentionally crashed some 73 Caprices that had that option when it was experimental some 40 years later and they deployed as intended. Amazing. My biggest issue was in the mid-90s my fuel injection computer took a crap. Try getting a new computer for a vehicle from the 70s where there was only like five hundred cars options with it. LOL. Finally found a place in California that would rebuild it
@@MrKinglauro I'm glad the airbags in the 73 Caprices worked as intended because I think on those cars General Motors deleted the separate shoulder belts that latched into the lap belt in the cars equipped with airbags. A lap belt alone is not much protection so that was putting a lot of confidence in those early airbags. As a teenager my daily driver was my grandfather's 1970 Buick Electra and back then I wore both the lap and separate shoulder belts because it was obvious that a lap belt alone would not protect the upper torso and head/face in a crash.
Absolutely love the Fleetwood and Fleetwood Talisman from the years “71 to ‘76. This one is one of the two most beautiful colors in my opinion which were the Firemist Blue and the Firemist Red. Wish so much I was in a position to buy it.
I remember years ago..maybe 1989-1990...a friend of mine bought a relatively low mile 1976 Fleetwood for $500....except for some paint issues from the Texas sun it was in very good shape

Starting @5:07 look at the lean of the car going around the traffic circle. Holy smokes. Start w/new shocks on that boat. Coming from a past owner "over 40 yrs ago" of a Fleetwood.
I just rewatched it and noticed the camera adjusted slightly just before going into the corner. I think it made the body roll look worse than it really is
You're always going to get some roll on any car with a luxury soft suspension. It's a trait that one doesn't mind if they were properly trained in driving big heavy cars, as they have to be driven differently. You should know this given that you really had a Fleetwood "over 40 yrs ago".
Hi from Russia. A great car from the past. The rear doors design is in question, but generally, this design of Eldorado and Fleetwood was a great idea! And a car is in nice condition. I do collect American cars. And I would like to have such for a weekend driving ;)
Leather was available as a costly option. The velour was standard. The leather Talisman cars are super rare..

Wonderful motorcar! I’ve seen photos of the Talisman interior in factor leather. Reminds me of the slightly later Eldorado Biarritz interiors.
From my reference material I think (think) the leather Talisman was 74 only, and supposedly they are extremely rare. I've never seen the leather version in the flesh (but yes, pictures).

Also, while THIS car had the 7-year-or-so Cadillac THREE-speed wipers, it's interesting that it didn't get the Delay wiper option...
Finally, the 70's decade was when people were just finally starting to quit smoking... I'll never understand how these velour interiors didn't burn up!

Correction - the Talisman interior could be had in leather. I saw an example of it online recently. Virtually all Talismans were velour upholstered, but there were indeed a few leather examples built.

This car is soooo 70s. The crushed velour interior looks like the inside of a casket. Beautiful Cadillac, nonetheless. My parents had a new 76 Coupe Deville, it drove like a dream. Silver, silver landau top, cranberry leather. Was traded on an 84 Eldorado with the awful HT4.1 V8.... it threw a rod at 60k miles

My Grandfather had one like that but it wasn't a Talisman. A 6 foot tall person could lay in the trunk and still have room to spare. You could lay 3 or 4 people in the trunk and they would not be touching. 4 full sized adult could sit in the back seat and have plenty of room but it only had 3 seat belts. It was a huge nice riding car with a monster engine that made it a 90 mph highway cruiser.
I Always think of Elvis when I see Cadillacs like this. I'm sure he bought many of Them Still in 1976. Love me tender ❤😊

Three years ago, the salvage yard in my town had one that just came in the yard. Black with tan cloth seats. Tried to talk him in putting it on E-Bay. He crushed it anyway.

Beautiful car..... Looks like it's in nice condition for it's age. If it was a 1974 model, it would only seat 4 passengers due to the full length console that ran front to rear.
Just want to point out, that chrome strip on the edge of the trunk lid (over the tail lights and license plate) is not correct. There should only be a chrome strip in the middle of the edge of the trunk lid, over the license plate.

I ordered a new '74 in July of "73 (when the pre order info went to the dealers). I ordered everything except the moon roof and tilt wheel, which for some odd reason you could not get with the "air cushion restraint system". Interesting thing was the did NOT come with front shoulder belts and I got stopped a few times by overzealous cops for failing to wear a seat belt. I picked it up in September of '73 when I got back from basic training in the Air Force and just before being shipped off to tech school. I really loved that car but unfortunately my father got t-boned by a big truck that ran a stop sign. The car didn't survive, but sorry to say my father did. This was in late '76 and I couldn't order a new one as production had already switched over to '77 models. And the other guys insurance didn't want to replace it and my insurance company low balled the value and I could never find one similarly equipped (this was LONG before the days of the innerweb). Had a lot of good times with my fellow reservists and college buddies.
at Expo '74, GM had three round temporary buildings with a few new cars spread about. One building held new technology features and one of those was a 4 door Olds 98 with an Air Cushion Restraint System that was demonstrated in slow motion. They would have 6 people sit in the car, the presenter explained the system. Instead of a 1/60th second deployment time, the bag in the steering wheel and a larger one infront of the front seat passengers took about 5 seconds to inflate. The backseat riders got no bag, just a free upclose look.

This is Beautiful Cadillac the only thing I would do with this car is take care of someone of the potential rust issues on the body and repair Respray it with high quality paint ,plus Redo the vinyl top but I would for sure retreat the metal on the under the top so it wouldn't rust out, Utter then that a beautiful car 😃😃🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍

This caddy his worth saving , it’s got so much potential , i just see on camera , witch is hard , that i think is was in a minor front end collision , front clip not lining at 90% , but easy to correct , my worry is more about the vinyl roof , if you peek under that stuff , front windshield area , and back pillars , you may fine rust that no one’s like , had work and lot’s of $$ to replace that vinyl roof ! , oh well just my opinion , would not matter , it’s a excellent condition caddy , & i would not hesitate to buy it , ps , have too many now ! Well done guys ! ❤

That would be awesome car to drive cross country in & so comfortable but I wouldn't want to have to fill the gas tank on it lol probably uses 5 gallons to start it up lol. I think Elvis Presley had one if my memory serves me right a black one.

This is the first Talisman that I've seen without the executive rear seat which only seats two due to massively wide center console that housed various controls. Could it be the executive rear seat was an option? Or was this car a special order?
I find these cushy velour seats to be the epitome of comfort thought I am surprised to hear Cadillac charged more for those than leather. That rear seat like it could put the fussiest baby to sleep in minutes. I'd say the Talisman has to be the most comfortable car ever built, given its interior and along with the car's weight. Bear in mind the following year, 1977, began the downsizing and lighter weights of all cars. Sadly, 1976 was the last year of big American cars. Back in the day my uncle had bought a brand-new 1974-76 Coupe de Ville that had nice cloth seating that was a velour though not a grade of that in the Talisman. His car cost a lot less than a Talisman, but it was still a nice comfortable car. A few years back I had a twenty-minute ride in the leather rear seat of an Escalade. It was as hard as a church bench, so too the ride of the Escalade was awful, and those two things made for a miserable trip that I couldn't wait to get out of that car.
Your mention of the thermometer brought back memories as recall those and their being mounted at the base of the driver's side rear view mirror. That was always a sign of a luxury car. I remember that they lit up at night. The rear seat footrests are a luxury. There was a time, mostly in the 1940s that just about all cars had rear seat footrests. Cars were big enough to have them and people expected them. They used to be built-into the bottom of the front seat, differently than the Talisman here, as they were permanently ready to use, without the flipping of a two-piece unit. They used to look like a carpeted ramp-way prior to the modern versions that utilized separate footrest units mounted into the floor. I learned this after purchasing my 1948 Chrysler Windsor. I was surprised to see the rear seat footrest because the Windsor model was Chrysler's middle car. Searching through photographs of 1940s cars I learned that many cars had them.
Regarding this Talisman, the factory radios in GM cars were long-lived and I expect that this one still works. It's probably in-op because wiring from it was transferred to the new radio in the console. The radio antenna is an easy fix if the antenna motor is working, because in all likelihood it needs a new mast. Attached to the bottom of the mast section is a flexible traction strip that always breaks. The GM rear defoggers back in that day operated via an electro-mechanical timer that usually breaks, so check that right after checking the fuse. When a fiber optic is dim, it's usually the result of the end piece having lost its alignment with a bright portion of the bulb that it's serving, or dirt/debris became lodged at the fiber optic end piece at the bulb. What surprises me about this car is that the cruise control still works, as I've always known the GM cruise systems that utilize vacuum hoses, to break down. Based on your description, I'd say that the exhaust leak is coming from the old-fashioned round donut that seals the exhaust manifold outlet to the motor pipe. I hope that what I've written helps. Thanks again for an interesting video of a rare car.

Good job with the review of the 76 Tallesman, and this one's a beautiful example. I was in my 20s in the 70s, so I remember these cars well, I used to detail a couple these that belonged to a few ladies I worked with. In The Los Angeles area, like Bev Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, these cars were everywhere I love the Blue Firemist paint. However, I found the mid-70s to 1980, Cadillacs huge but well equipped, after that I didn't see much else to distinguish them as a traditional Cadillac. I would say that title goes to the 72 model year. It definitely looked like w😮hat a Cadillac should look like. They were big, heavy and had a nice ride. In my opinion the following years 73-80, were just big and boring. The front grill and headlights are fine but the rest of the car had nothing. It gets even worse at the rear. Beginning with those large body fillers that occupied the distance between the vertical bumper and the end of the rear fenders were not attractive at all. They never really fit well and they certainly didn't match the color of the rest of the car. They were 2 different materials, the metal part and the plastic looking fillers. That color discrepancy cheapened the entire car. And those horrible horizontal taillights were too thin, lacked character and looked like they were throwen on the car from the GM parts bin. No engineering went into them at all. Again boring. as for the interior, the seats and door panels were finished well in a Cadillac style, but what about that dash. In a word, boring. The instrument panel is practically non-existent, it was way too small for the car. Everything was handeled with idiot lights. The most detailed part of the dashboard was the HVAC ducks spread out over the dash, yes, they were chrome, but that was about it. After a while, they wouldn't even stay adjusted to the driver or passenger set positions. They would just fall to their bottom positions, unless you swedged something between the register and it's housing. Just boring, and that includes the steering wheel with it's totally fake wood trim. To be honest, the Lincoln Town Cars were much better looking both inside and out. The exterior styling was very much in the Lincoln tradition. Very sharp with plenty of details to keep your eyes moving to every part of the car. The Town Car dashboard was magnificent. Full instrumentation, a barrel speedometer, the gauges were well placed and lit at night including a Cartietr analog clock. The dash ashtray could double for another seat if needed, it was so big. The seats had that loose pillow look that resembled the couch in your living room. All that and a mighty Ford 460 cubic inch engine with a Motorcraft 4300 4 barrel carburetor. The Ford C6 auto transmission had its shift points set for the best fuel economy possible, but once it was rolling at highway speed, it had plenty of power, and kept that huge Town Car at speed with ease. So in my view, the 70s Cadillacs failed relative to their former style, and definitely as compared the the same era Town Cars. I always thought GM should have been ashamed of its self for putting out such boring cars, and still should. But after all, their "GM" they didn't care, they still don't, they don't have to. Just the reckless persute of profits. Just because they are big, that doesn't make them better. There, I said it. Someone had to.
Well said,I believe the 67-72 years were the high water mark years for American cars. After that build quality, style, power and taste all dramatically fell away to the point of shame...I mean, a 500 CI engine only making 185 hp and getting 8 mpg or worse 😢😢😢

The only other Cadillac that can stand next to this is the Cadillac Brougham D elagance...this Cadillac Tailsman also came in just a four seater which is more rare than this one

Well maybe……..the Medici cloth in this car is exclusive to the Talisman, however, believe it or not, you COULD get those seats in leather as an even more costly option, and ONLY if it was a Talisman.

I'm a disabled 69 year old guy that needs a car. My father collected cars and I've owned several collectable rides in my life.These days I don't do a lot of driving, the car I sold last (money trouble) It was a 2009 SX4. 58000 miles on her. so as you can see the driving part doesn't play a big part I need a car to get around with.

Actual leather in this Caddy as opposed to the fluffing velour interior. If this is an FI 500 V8, then it's the 200hp unit.
