Brooke's singing voice is just as an no yin g as her speaking voice.
I found John and Susan's scenes kinda cute. Her going to Eric's office to give him some takeaway sandwiches. It scenes like that where the actors are playing themselves and you can see how much fun they have on the set.

@@TriniT21 it's really sad to see her this confident and optimistic, and then realize what will become of her by the end of this storyline.
I think both BE and KKL deserve credit in this scene. It was a funny scene with high energy and and they played off each other really well in the comedic moments (like Brooke's priceless incredulous "how did this little creature just upstage *_me_* in front of my own date?" look at 08:09). And I respect KKL for being a good sport and going on camera singing off key next to a professional singer, in front of literally millions of viewers.
Why the show kept insisting on cutting the Brooke/Macy rivalry short, I'll never know. It could easily have been a long term thing like Brooke/Taylor and Brooke/Stephanie.
Yes, very funny scene in this episode and also the smaller one in the previous episode. Well done to 2 mainly soap actresses who gave a scene better and funnier than a lot of sitcoms.

The show kinda did keep the Brooke/ Macy rivalry until Macy's end. The writers revived it when Macy was involved with Deacon and supporting him.
No idea why they killed Macy off. Did the actress want to leave or had Bell just no use anymore for Macy?
@@mara4450 In 2000, it was Brad Bell who wrote her out. She was very surprised when he told her that he felt there was no more story for Macy. It baffles me though as there were so many possibilities. But alas, she was killed off.
In 2003, when the chandelier fell on her head and she was in an indefinite coma, she asked to be released from her contract so she could move to All My Children. I was sad to see her go, but she excelled over there.

Then he says Yeah it Did and he ends up swapping spit with Stephanie and Lauren is left there eating crow. I cannot find the episode of her actually singing. This is exactly what I've been saying regarding the "unreliable narrative" of this season - Brooke _thinks_ she's in love with Thorne. Even Brad 🔔seems to think (or want us to think) that she's in love with Thorne, and the writing starts portraying Brooke and Thorne as "star-crossed lovers". But Stephanie knows better, and eventually she will be proven right.

@@Esi-741 Oh me too Es! It's my favorite romcom and I watched it so many times with my mom and sister growing up. I love how it subverts the genre (Julia does't get the guy and you realize halfway through that she's the villain even though she's the star). Really it's the movie that influenced a lot of my thinking/analysis of Bill Bell's writing.
The scene actually reminded me of a Golden Girls episode where Blanche brought Dorothy to her favorite bar and she got jealous when Dorothy got all the men’s attention for her singing. Blanche tried to do the same thing and ended up getting embarrassed. I think the point in both episodes is that people need to play to their own strengths and stay in their lane. And both Blanche and Brooke were known for being seductive not great singers 🤭

*Characterization in the Brooke/Thorne/Macy triangle*
It's interesting (and a little confusing) to keep track of the changes in characterization when watching season 13 in parallel with season 8, and this scene with Brooke/Thorne/Macy shows clearly where they are character-wise in 1999, compared to four years earlier.
Thorne is, of course, quite literally a different person. He has nothing in common with JT's Thorne, and the character growth that we (finally!) saw in 1995 is undone, as here we see him falling for a woman who deep down prefers his brother as if nothing had happened since 1987.
Brooke's Glitchy Good Girl phase was over a long time ago, and we are now well into the Super Brooke era (Brooke as siren and s ex symbol) - emphasized in the previous episode by how easily Brooke catches the attention of a random man at the Insomnia. She is an exaggerated version of early 90s Brooke, and her pursuit of Thorne is a repeat of her relationship with Eric - another substitute for Ridge. But what is clearly on display in this storyline is her (as *Nick* says) "fauxmantic hero ine" trait (she is convinced that Thorne is now her destiny), which actually makes the character somewhat consistent, if taken to an extreme we haven't seen before because she in now in love with the _third_ man in the same family.
Macy is quite consistent with her earlier characterization, and the show still uses the concept of singing voice/narrative voice for her. In fact, this scene is a clear mirror scene of when she sang in front of Karen and Thorne at the Bikini Bar (Karen ridiculed her for not being "fun-loving" enough, and Macy responded by getting on stage and proving her wrong), and using her singing voice to try to assert plot control is _such_ a Macy move. However, there is a little more of an edge to Macy now because Brooke is a more ag gres sive opponent (having deliberately crashed Macy's date with Thorne), meaning Macy takes the challenge one step further - and maybe too far - by inviting Brooke up on stage. (Of course, in the mirror scene from 1992, she invited _Thorne_ to join her on stage for the encore, but she can't do that now because this Thorne can't sing.)
Great analysis Annie and thanks for the shoutout! One thing I'm having a hard time with is this bipolar portrayal of Brooke. On one hand with Thorne and Macy she's Super Brooke as you say, but with Ridge and Taylor, she's almost a saint! Worrying about Taylor, gazing happily at a picture of Ridge and the twins. The two parts of her don't go together, they're complete extremes.

_We_ know, based on the show's history (and future), that Brooke will never truly be over Ridge, and that Thorne is a replacement, just like Eric was. Most _other characters_ know it too and comment on it (Stephanie, Macy, Eric, Darla, and so on). But _Brooke_ doesn't know it, and the "invisible narrator" is following her (unreliable) lead.
Since Brooke's "fauxmantic" narrative is now that she is in love with Thorne, not Ridge, she reinforces this narrative by _telling_ herself (and us) that she is truly happy for Ridge and supportive of him and Taylor, that is, that she is over him because there is now a new love, a new destiny, in her life. But at the same time, we see subtle signs that this might not have been the case if Taylor had died and Brooke had actually had the _option_ of going back to Ridge. However, ever since Taylor got pregnant with twins Brooke has known that that means Brooke has no chance with Ridge (as he will not leave _three_ children), and this is when her "backup destiny" Thorne became interesting to her.
Brooke's "saintly" attitude in relation to Ridge and Taylor is a way of convincing the viewer that her and _Thorne_ are the "real thing".
I think Macy's constant trash talking of Brooke didn't help her cause. And trying to humiliate Brooke publicly backfired on her because it put Thorne in an awkward situation, which he was trying to avoid in the first place.
That's the second time the third Thorne falls for a woman still in love with his brother.andnthisnThorne conspired with Brooke during Thomas pregnancy,he knows Brooke's history with Ridge. I said in another post that the script has to demean the male characters in order to believe in Brooke words or to see her irresistible when they already have another irresistible woman at their side.

Brooke is now "working closely" with Thorne. The same Thorne she could have spit on when he showed up years ago on the plane to Paris instead of Ridge (with whom she was "working closely" then).
I have always said that woman had never been a good CEO who cared about the company.. That was just her breeding ground for "working closely" with whichever Forrester man she's trying to bed at the time.
*Macy controls the plot but overplays her hand*
Macy is using the same psychology on Brooke that she used on Anthony in S8 - just like she created a scenario where Anthony needed to speak up in order to probe that he was a superior man to Thorne, now she creates a scenario where Brooke needs to sing in order to prove that she is a superior woman to Macy. And she is counting on the egos of both characters to do the job for her. However, just like with Anthony, at first she appears to succeed, but her triumph is temporary.
Watching Brooke make a fo ol of herself is funny and satisfying because it's well-deserved (since she's the one who initiated this confrontation by showing up at Macy's date and br a gging to Macy about her own attractiveness, not to mention Brooke's pursuit of Thorne and di s respect of Macy in the several months leading up to this), but one cannot help but feel that this was not the wisest move on Macy's part, and that Macy would have accomplished her goal more successfully (and gracefully) by only singing the _first_ song. At the end of that song, Macy had succeeded in winning everyone's attention including Thorne's, Giovanni's, and the guy who Brooke had previously flirted with to prove a point to Macy, and Brooke had already got the message and was leaving. But at the end of the second song, Macy seemed to have lost that momentum with Thorne because she took the lesson too far, making him sympathize with _Brooke_ instead (because Brooke was now suddenly the underdog). This is also in keeping with Macy's continuous attempts at gaining plot control but ultimately failing.
There is also a subtle detail in the sound mix right as Macy takes over after Brooke at 13:31. In the exact moment that Macy gets up on stage, there is a _feedback sound._ This is an undesired sound effect indicating a _loss of control_ - it usually happens when you turn up the volume of a microphone too loud. And since the connection between Macy's singing voice and her narrative voice has already been established, here we see Macy's (uncharacteristic) loss of control of her own sound as a metaphor for how she loses control of the plot by overplaying her hand - by "tur ning the volume up too loud".

I do like their rivalry though! It's a nice change after all the years of Brooke vs Taylor. While Taylor usually kept her calm and dignity in their scenes together (leaving the🧨 🎆🔥to Stephanie), Macy is a more spontaneous and dynamic character, adding an element of unpredictability. And although both Taylor and Macy are Good Girls, Macy is more of a "fig h ter" than Taylor is, meaning this new Brooke vs Macy dynamic is more vo la tile and "ex p l o si ve" (no pun intended).
@@annieo6527 Same here! Something different from the usual Braylor rivalry which I don't find all that compelling to be honest. Taylor just isn't the sort of person who should be getting down in the mud with someone like Brooke as it goes against her altruistic Good Girl (TM) image. But with Macy on the hand, it's not exactly beneath her to do so (after all she is a recovering alcoholic). So if Brooke wants to challenge her, she better be prepared to get her ass whooped. Macy is no angel.

Well, Brooke initiated the first round of this duel (the "watch and learn, little girl" scene). Macy's singing was the second round.
