- What's better than visiting an indoor cactus and succulent plant sale & show on a rainy day in Spring? We will see on offer the most fabulous and awesome plants, some very, very old, and mostly with very attractive prices - something for every taste, including hundreds of species of cacti from the genera Ariocarpus, Mammillaria, Echinocereus, Parodia, Turbinicarpus, Gymnocalycium, Trichocereus, Echinopsis, etc. and also many other wonderful and rare succulent plants such as Agave, Aloe, Euphorbia, Lithops, etc.
Come join me for a relaxed tour to see what's on offer at this amazing plant selling event that is hosted by the Schweinfurt local branch of the Deutsche Kakteen Gesellschaft e.V. (DKG), the German Cactus (& other Succulents) Society - one of many local DKG branches that host events such as these for the public and especially for all fans & enthusiasts of cacti and other succulent plants. Many of the exhibitors are private collectors who are making some space in their own collections and parting from their seedlings as well as often also some of their prized mature mother plants!
In this PART 1 of the video, we tour the plant sale - and in the following, Part 2, we will take a look at the plant haul that I managed to secure at the sale for my own cactus & succulent greenhouse collection!

Large variety of cacti and reasonable prices. That tray of strobocactus is pretty cool I didn't catch the price on those.

Excellent video Joe! I felt like I attended the show too! If I went to that show I would probably have to refinance my house haha! There were so many awesome specimens and thank you so much for the names on top of the screen. You have so much knowledge your list would definitely be different than mine. Well that was fun. So many cacti in all of those smaller containers. You had to cover up your purchases in the trunk of your car with all of that big type across the page! I guess that means we get to see them in another video! My family has its roots in Alsace, France, but they all spoke German since it is so close to the border. They came to the US in the late 1800s. @@cactusjoe There might be some relatives still there, but I've never visited Europe. My sister delves in genealogy, so she knows the history better. I've never seen the spelling Elsass, but you know better since you're from Germany. Do you speek German too? Would love to hear a little German in an upcoming video. My cacti are starting to bloom, so I think I'll pay them a little visit. Take care!
Hey Joe,... Where you going with that Lophophora Williamsii in your hand?... That never gets old...LOL! I always tell my self that wal mart workers are abusing the cactus and I have to save them from the abuse... those bastard almost killed this one that I saved, Its doing great now... regular aloe. I saved my poor Domino cactus from Home depot... They may have been caring for it better than me at the time, but I came a long way in 8 years... I treat my cactus better than anything else on earth, except other cactus lovers! Love that stuff!

Yes, I agree with you, we are very often indeed saving plants from these supermarkets and even nurseries, especially when they have no clue about how to grow different plants in different ways...so cacti will be on "equal" footing to orchids and other houseplants when it comes to their treatment, watering, etc., haha! I recognized the Stenocactus (the one with the yellow flowers) 🌼 you recently showed in a Shorts video, it is indeed gorgeous, so understandable that you couldn't take your eyes/hands off 😄

Great video, Joe. I wonder how an Ariocarpus of that size can cost only 20 Euro (minute 4:55), where do such cacti come from? Prices are lower than currently in Berlin (Kakteentage, 18.-21.5.23).
Hi, thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Because these smaller, more local plant sales events are mainly "by collectors, for collectors" you have predominantly private hobbyists who sell their seed-grown plants (...or older plants, when they need to make new space in their collections, we all know that issue I think, haha) to other collectors. So of course prices will be much lower than at the big events (like in Berlin), where also the large, commercial nurseries and internationally well-known sellers will be present and there will be fewer of these real bargains to be found. Today I went to my local botanical garden respectively its cactus/succulent greenhouse. It is voluntarily cared for by our local branch of the DKG, the "Kakteenfreunde Friedrich Ritter".
I talked to one of the careholders and he told me that they plan to build a new - and much more bigger - greenhouse in the next year. That is definitely necessary because it is slowly getting way too old (built in the 80's) and also too small for the big (especially columnar) cacti 😅
They also have a table at the entrance where they sell a few plants of the collection for very reasonable prices. I took a beautiful "Parodia schumanniana" with me. Do you also have a specimen of that plant? 🌵

Hi there! Thanks, so happy you enjoyed the video! Indeed, this particular plant sale was very thin on caudiciforms ...but indeed, they are super popular and sought after plants here too! The prices are quite low, as this was an "insider" event, from private collectors for other like-minded folks. No large, commercial sellers, otherwise prices would be much higher here too! 👍😊🙏🙏🌵🌺🏵💚😎

Yeah, it's mainly because at these type of specialist sales, plants go from collector to collector, so (mostly) no commercial sellers. Otherwise prices are much higher indeed.
