Bridges, broadband and babies: Inside Pete Buttigieg's first year in Washington

  • Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is one of the most visible and compelling members of the Biden administration.
After his confirmation last year, Buttigieg became the first openly gay, Senate-confirmed Cabinet secretary in U.S. history, the youngest member of Biden's Cabinet, and the youngest person to ever serve as transportation secretary. In that role, he championed the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the $1.2 trillion law that will make major investments throughout the country on roads, bridges, railways, and broadband, the most significant bipartisan bill to pass this Congress.
Buttigieg was previously the Mayor of South Bend, IN and has spent a lot of time in Chicago. He is a former member of the U.S. Navy Reserve who was deployed to Afghanistan. He and his husband Chasten adopted fraternal twins in September. His political path, which included a notably strong performance in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, was the subject of a documentary released in November.
Join us as the IOP hosts Secretary Buttigieg for a student-led discussion about politics, government, service, and family.

It isn’t a new concept, as illustrated in depth in “Do We Need Ethical Principles?” Richard Rorty (1994), but there is a lot of neglected forgetting associated with it.
That is, how many times must you be convinced that
“persons should not be construed to include women because it had never been so construed in the past” (at 40.12),
or that it is only Plato and Mill among the great formulators of ethical principles, who have written on the matter (37.20).
I mean, Everybody knows that, already. And everybody knows everybody knows that, already.
Even Rorty knew this.. and he knew this way back in 1994,
Which illustrates the impotence, or weakness, of being behind and not ahead with ethical principle. 45.48
      __
btw, Rorty is famously unknown for his shenanigans, which consist in speaking clearly on both sides of the issue at the same time.
That is, “for it seemed obvious to me, as it had to Socrates, that one cannot lie knowingly unless one knows the truth”.. already. So you just have to know where he's telling the truth

I speak on nothing you don’t already know or for which you don’t already have intuition.
As reminder, then, and in order to leave you with direction before digging into the genealogy (cf Rhetoric 1402a),
I recommend starting out by treating the concept as a phenomenon:
“We are confronted with the oddity of a hetton, or weaker, logos
which even in the moment of its triumph remains identifiably, hetton.
Conversely, we must assume, the kreitton, or stronger, even in defeat, cannot be called hetton.”
There are more percepts than this in it, of course,
but this way of looking also works well for other deliberated constructions
like “categorical imperative”, “practical maxim in the indicative mood” and “common touch”.
As to what Aristotle said about
what “making the worse appear the better argument” means,
or even the superposed notion of “must declare the causes”,
I hope you find a more appropriate place than this for such serious discussion.

      @paulabaird9349 Před 2 lety +6

The United States secretary of transportation is a cabinet-level position responsible for maintaining and improving the country's transportation system. The approval of what does or doesn't go into baby formula is the FDA. Private companies, not the government makes baby formula. How baby formula is transported is not the cause of the shortage. The department of transportation doesn't produce transportation - cars, buses, trains, planes, etc. It creates the system on which the private manufacturing of transportation vehicles will use., private, city, state, and federal funds build systems on which to travel. For example the street I live on is built with private funds provided by the HOA. State highways are funded by state funds; interstates are funded with federal funds. Anyone out there please correct me if I'm wrong. The 1.2 trillion dollar package is intended to provide federal dollars to improve infrastructure with attention to the overall quality and equality of life in the local communities.

There were a TON of reasons why it was built; NONE having a damn thing to do with racism. The system was built primarily for National Defense, hence the name. It was and is a HUGE asset to this country in every way.
His thinking stemmed from a bit of truth in the respect that many spurs thru and near downtowns were built thru inner cities. I'll give him 2% on that I guess. Maybe. But it had 98% to do with population, traffic patterns, terrain, elevations, rivers, etc. And even on the 2%, many if not most folks in inner cities ended up with better & safer housing, better schools, and overall better lives.
