Sting: âI think itâs a nasty little song, really rather evil. Itâs about jealousy and surveillance and ownershipâ, "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite." Still, one of my favorite songs of the decade.
Haha, exactly. I laughed at the pure beautiful love song explanation at the start.
I thought I read or heard him say that he wrote "If you love somebody, set them free", as the antithesis to this song.
Iâm 68 and the forgetfulness is settling in for moi too. Anyways, more delving into the Police, please. Also you mom was remembering the video where he was dancing around candles, where the student becomes the master.

THE STALKER SONG!!!!!
Still amazes me that a tiny minority of critics canât see past the lyrics
@@ImpartiallySpeaking The lyrics are the song. The musical part is the tune.
Trust Me, the Stalking Game is not what it was.
. Like many things such as Dial-Up Phones, Video Recorders, and Alarm Clocks its become pretty obsolete. Progress,innit...
@@Isleofskye ? Safe to say most people can see past the lyrics and appreciate the song as being a work of genius and the fact that it remains the most played song in the history of radio speaks for itself. Looking at some of the biggest contemporary bands in the world including Maroon 5, itâs worth remembering that their song âAnimalâ is one of their most successful singles and remains hugely popular throughout the world which just goes to prove your point of view to be complete nonsense where younger audiences buy into dark themes within music today just as much as they did back in 1983
@@ImpartiallySpeaking You seem to be extremely knowledgeable as regards my point of view, certainly far more than myself.
Where did I say or imply anything about what younger audiences buy into ?
I can't believe it, and you're not alone, it seems many do not recognise a DOUBLE BASS. Classic orchestral instrument usually played with a bow similar to a violin bow but larger.
We all learn things at different times in our lives đ now I know.
â@@generationgapreacts ... Yeah, it's called either a 'double bass', 'upright bass', 'standup bass' or simply an 'acoustic bass' ... Often used in orchestra arrangements.
The double bass is not commonly seen in modern pop and rock music, but it is an essential instrument in jazz music. The classic jazz combo almost always includes a double bass, though the electric bass has made inroads in recent years. For example, the Dave Brubeck Quartet (famous for the song Take Five) consisted of Dave on the piano, accompanied by a saxophone, double bass and drums. And when used in jazz music the bass is typically plucked, not played with a bow. The opposite is true in orchestral music, where the bow is prevalent, and plucking, which is called pizzicato, is less common.
Best. Popsong. Ever. Period.
Ive heard it described as a wedding song, a beautiful love song, a breakup song and a stalker song. That last one is close. In an interview Sting gave awhile back he said it was actually written about the paparazzi that follow celebrities everywhere and believe that the celebrity belongs to them.
Welcome back ladies! âThe song is very, very sinister,â Sting said to the BBC, âand ugly. "people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite It is about an obsessive stalker" Other tracks you might enjoy include-
'One World' 'Peanuts' 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' 'Spirits In The Material World' 'On Any Other Day'
Correct. đ
The Police were one of the best 2nd British Invasion groups of the 1980's. "Every Breath You Take" was their biggest pop hit spending 8 weeks at #1 in 1983.
There was only one British Invasion and it wasn't in the eighties.
Welcome back Momma and Baby Gap! The Musical Instrument was called a Upright Bass or Stand Up Bass!
Thank you Glenn, great to be back! đ„°
It's a fantastic song. I think it is distinctive because musically it sounds like a love song, and it is sung that way too, but lyrically it is darker in tone. It is that juxtaposition that makes this song stand for me.
This is the most played song in radio history. Apparently, in 2019 it took over this position from âYouâve Lost That Lovin Feelinâ, which had held the title since 1999.
That was a double base Sting was playing. Many years of playing jazz and in an orchestra. ;-)
One of the creepiest songs ever to be a massive hit single! Interesting reactions from both of you ladies. Nice to see you again. Stay safe out there. Best wishes from đŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó ż England.
The song is more about "obsession" with someone, even after she's left him. He still thinks she belongs to him.
its called Upright Bass, i would also say he probably played his bass guitar on the track as well. Ladies try their song ...KING OF PAIN, the lyrics are deep and amazing
The video to this song is based round an old black and white clip of a song that was found on one of the first jukeboxes from the 30's I think. The makers of this video pop duo Godley and cream who used to be in 10cc had saw a BBC TV show all about this very old jukebox and in one of the clips there was a three peice Jazz band. And a double base was being played in it. They showed Sting this TV show and he said he had already watched it and like them wanted the video to be a bit like this old clip. SO thats why there is a double base in it. Sting can actually play an up right base but I think it's just a base guitar on the actual song.
It is more an obsession song than a love song and it has dark overtones. It is a great song.
It bothered me back then that many people didn't grasp the message of this song. It's about a twisted, controlling love. Later Sting made the song "If you love someone, set them free" to stress his view of the nature of love.
If you are curious about another song with a twisted view on love (even worse), you should check out "Jeanny" by (the late, Austrian) singer Falco.
Regards from the Netherlands!
This song is from their album Synchronicity. It was written by Sting and was released in 1983. The song has been widely regarded as one of the greatest hits of the 1980s. Loved the reaction â€

I am 69 in London and on odd occasions, I,too, lose my train of thought and, also,go off on a tangent. Most times I do retrieve what I was going to say but, occasionally, the thought disappears down a dark well and is lost forever. CONVERSELY,I can this Londoner can name all 50 USA States in alphabetical order, out loud,in under 25 seconds, all 54 African Countries and all my 41 classmates from Primary School in 1963 and the Grammar School Register at Secondary School from 1965 in 20 seconds, out loud ...lol
I've always wondered why I could never get a job! On the section of the application form they ask if you have a Police record - I put yes! Synchronicity! đ€Łđ€Ł
Sting obviously had a great career when he went solo. However, I still believe his best stuff was with The Police. Great artist nonetheless.....
It's Andy's guitar that makes this song great along with stings voice. Hard to believe we all wanted MTV and now.... i would rather shut my head in a door
Beautiful Mother and Daughter! đ
The Englishman in New York was 1 of my fave Sting songs
I saw The Police In concert in 2008 during their last tour. Just amazing. In October I am going to see Sting in concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I canât wait,

The time off has suited Mom and Baby....you both look very beautiful and rested.
This song is about stalking, I saw Sting in an interview talking about it.
#1 song in the U.S. and Canada for 1983, Grammy's for Record of the Year, Best Pop Performance (Duo or Group). Most played song on the radio (close to 15 million), ahead of You've Lost That Lovin Feeling by The Righteous Brothers. :)
God I remember when this was released....very memorable and well done..Great rhythm and backing. TBH I mostly listened to the music,....just groovin to the music. Even John Lennon said many many years ago..most ppl listen mainly to the music..not the lyrics. Mind you as a teen who cares about lyrics unless they are provocative..
Its a Stalking song as he said so himself. đ
Hi ladies this song about admiration or stalking I'm not sure was a huge smash hit in 1983 it reached number one and stayed there for 8 weeks made the Police and Gordon Sumner!(Sting) a household name.
Sting has always done most of the writing, playing base guitar, or earlier on, playing the full classical music double base that he strums instead of bowing.
The man is watching in the window and the cigarettes show how long he's been watching and stalking.
Yes, Mummy Gap, Iâm similar to you, music first and sometime donât pay any attention to the lyrics either. If it sounds good it get me. Also must say about The Police that Iâve never seen them on video before, usually only on radio. Never knew Sting rocked the upright bass either. Loved it â€ïžđ€đžđ»đŠđș
The stalker's anthem. Great song. You can complete the set with Don't Stand So Close To Me.
I loooove Sting and the Police, his voice is always amazing !!!!!
You both would be amazed to hear "Songs from the Labyrinth" his album of medieval troubadour songs.
About two weeks ago I got to see Sting do this song in concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Wow
That was a Double Bass core of the back of an Orchestra & can play deeper notes than a bass guitar.
Andy's guitar playing really makes this song work...great counter-melodic motiff to Sting's vocal.
It was written in 1982 and is based around Sting's first marriage which was in ruin at the time. When he sings "I keep crying, baby, baby please" you can really hear the ache in his voice and in his soul. I must ask are you two ladies Native American? I really like your dark eyes and jet black hair. Great video by the way.
You should do 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' next - slightly less ambiguous lyrics. It came out while I was at Teacher Training College, and it was taken as something of a warning to all of us good-looking student teachers. Well, no one was as good-looking as Mr Sumner of course, but we tried.
sting was playing what is called an up-right bass.
Welcome back ladies!! If you really want to pay attention to the lyrics of a song. Check out âDonât Stand So Close To Meâ by these guys!! âRoxanneâ and âWrapped Around Your Fingerâ are a couple other good ones too!!
Very astute. Well done picking up right away on the frequently misunderstood lyrics.
Instrument being played by Sting is an orchestral Double Bass (sometimes called upright bass) and the song is actually about a stalker and is in reality very sinister, hence the piercing stare made by Sting to the camera during the video. Fantastic song though, one of a great catalogue of wonderful songs by The Police, a very underrated band.
Also called Standing Bass, Contrabass, upright bass
Glad youâre back. This song was played over and over and over again Iâm the 1980s. I love the lighting in the video. I managed a small jewelry store in a mall in the mid 1980s, and I hired an assistant manager that looked like a female Sting. Not on purpose, of course. She was a great assistant manager. I made a great choice.
you MUST listen to his project when he sang with Shaggy..i really love this album, the combo of these 2 uniqe voices is just great.
On the surface tis is a beautiful romantic song. But In actuality, it is one of the darkest, creepiest songs to hit the airwaves. (I have not read any other comment before I type this, but you are probably being swamped with comments like this.) The dark view of this stalker song is not just my interpretation of the song, Sting admits it himself. I got the following from a Financial Times article, but I've seen it in multiple places. "Sting felt that the mix of light and darkness was âall about my lifeâ. It derived from the mood swings he experienced amid professional success and marital failure. But the âreally rather evilâ song about âjealousy and surveillance and ownershipâ had an extra significance. It summed up The Policeâs troubled internal dynamics." For a less traumatizing Police love song listen to "Be My Girl- Sally."
Great show as always. Are we having a 25000 sub. Show with cake and ice cream soon.
The stalker's song! I love how people think its a love song...
I loved the song years ago and still do. Lyrics to a song can be interpreted in different ways. I thought your reactions were great.
Thank you! I agree, well said!!!
You're 65? Im 37 and im with you! đ
One reason why tobacco smoking was so popular in older generations was because of WWII. Tobacco companies provided tons and tons of smokes to men in the Armed Forces. Millions of men became addicted to them and it has taken decades to reduce tobacco consumption in the US. And, of course, the companies lied about the dangers and the addictions.
I'm 69 and Smoking is not one of my vices but I have just looked at a 10-minute CZcams Video on former English Child Star: Jack Wyld and if you want to see the effects of drinking and smoking then watch that. He starts off fresh faced and by 52 he died from Throat Cancer, even having his tongue and vocal chords removed and looking a shadow of his former self.
Ever since Sting sang those lyrics, he's creeped me out. What a stalker!
Is my favorite song from police I really love it so much. maybe you can show to your daugther KISSING a FOOL a george michael classic .
anyway you got my attention and my sub to your channel you both remember me my relationship with my daugther we use to do this kind of reaction together (not on video of course)
They were on the radio during the 80s a lot. Never knew Sting with hair, and I never knew him without it, since I quit listening to them in 80s. LOL.
Welcome back!
Man, I feel old now...the bass instument he was playing is literally called "a Bass". The electric bass guitar was created to mimic it's deep sound, just without the huge size needed to create it....đ
đđđđđžđȘđ
Stalker vibes. BTW, this song was #1 on the radio for 12 weeks in a row in it's heydey. It also was sampled by Puff Daddy back in the 90's. Great song.
Ive always interpreted it as a very sad song. Sting be damned.
Hello...from Texas! The number 1 song of 1993? But how come NO REACTORS out there..react to MARIE OSMOND? đą
This song was written from Stings first wife's point of view. He said this not long ago in an interview. At the time this came out in 1983 Sting had left his wife Frances Tomelty in 1982 and was now with her best friend Trudie Styler. So the song is about how he felt his x wife would feel about all this.
As soon as mom said beautiful love song, I was cringing because of how vile the lyrics really are.
This definitely a stalker song. Sting was dumbfounded that some couples said, âthis is our song!â Sting was left to wonder what type of sick relationship they had.
Talking of cigarettes on music videos it would be great to see you both react to âGlory Box - live from Roseland NYâ by British trip hop band Portishead.

I always think of this King of Pain and Wrapped Around Your Finger as a trilogy of songs about pain, misery and malevolence. All three of the songs sound lovely but lyrically they are dark and dripping with menace.
Video directed by Godley and Creme from 10cc.
A dark lullaby. Obsessive and painful longing. Not healthy... but honest.
Actually, this song is about a man stalking a woman, with evil intentions. Although most people think it's a love story. Can you imagine playing a song at your wedding about a love story, then you find out it's about a stalker?
It has a beautiful melody that completely whitewashes the sinister lyrical content, which is basically a song about a possessive, creepy, control-obsessed stalker. There is also the never-talked-about issue where I believe that Sting, knowingly or subconsciously, 'stole' or 'borrowed' the sentiment and similar lyrics from Led Zeppelin's D'yer Mak'er and just turned the point of view.
Wrong. It is a break up song. Sting said it related to his jealous feelings about his ex-wife Frances Tomelty.
@@lorddaver5729 That may have been his motivation but it is not how the words hit me or apparently many, many other people who express similar sentiments about its lyrical content and tone.
@@timwhitnell7145 How the lyrics struck you is not really the point. If the guy who wrote the song says it's about his jealous feelings about his ex-wife, who are you to say it wasn't?
@@lorddaver5729 It is entirely the point. I have read endless remarks by famous songwriters who say their lyrics may mean something specific to them or just something vague but the bottom line is that numerous times I have read a musician state that ultimately the song's words mean whatever they mean to each person, that they are open to interpretation, which is what art is all about.
A song about a stalker.
Sting was in the midst of a painful divorce when this was written, having met his current wife, and it is quite creepy really: Itâs the declaration of intent from a jealous stalker. Yet countless couples have insisted on playing it at their weddings - hopefully they didnât pay attention to the lyrics.
He plays a double bass in the video - the original bass instrument - but itâs for visual effect only, he plays a regular electric bass on the recording. (Two of them, actually, if you delve deeper into the recording).
Yep, the stalker song⊠they really do a wide variety of slightly strange relationships. e.g. the schoolgirl songâŠ
Which is this one

Classical Upright Bass... the bass used historically in orchestral music... Up until the electric bass, this was the instrument used.
You should do the official video for âRoxanneâ their first hit
It is called rabbit trail. It is also not about truly finding the rabbit.
A breakup song? ok maybe, but it is about the guy stalking her, watching her every move. Goes well with their other songs - one about a prostitute and another about a teacher banging his under age student. Where are the police when you need them lol.
Creepy lyrics. It's about stalking an ex.

The stalkers anthem
I've always thought the lyrics were clear that the song is about a deranged stalker. That's why I could never get into the song even when it first hit the radio.
Sting was mystified why people used this for their wedding dance. He couldn't figure out why they didn't understand that the guy was a stalker! Nothing romantic at all!
stalking song, not romantic, about somebody possessive that cant move on ,wont let go, not a sad love song
