We are still in winter here in central Utah, but thanks for the reminder.

A great reminder that I need to add compost to my beds to get my cool weather crops in soon, but first I need to buy plastic to cover my hoops.

Thank you! I needed to hear this! I did prune my elderberries, and have lots of cuttings for friends, as well as myself. But I can do some of the other things, too. We haven't been having quite the kind of winters we used to have lately. We did have some snow and our temps went down into the single digits for a couple weeks. But now our weather is a bit like yours.

This has been a weird year. A lot more rain than snow, but our mountains are still getting snow so I won't complain.

I'm sure we will see more snow before winter is over, but as of right now we have clear and high 40's for the next few days so I'm hoping to get a few things done.

It is my understanding that ash from burned brush is good fertilizer. If this is true, how much do you apply. I have a tiller for my tractor. I have a roadside stand where I grow and sell tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins and squash. I’m thinking about growing sweet corn. Do you just apply a little lead in a dusting, about 1/4 inch thick or another amount then till it in good with the tractor? If it is good, how soon do you till it in prior to planting? Or is it just best to mix it in with my compost and then disperse into my garden? I live in the west central Illinois part of the country.

Wood ash can be a good soil amendment it has a lot of calcium and potassium. It is also good at raising PH. But you NEED to get a soil test done before you add it. To make sure your soil needs those nutrients.
Our place here in Utah is a good example of that. Utah soils (in our area) are already high in calcium, potassium, and have a very high PH. Adding wood ash to our soil would be a disaster! The last thing we need is more PH. So you need to be sure you understand your soil and what it needs before you start randomly adding amendments.

Can you recommend gardening tools for a beginner? I’m going to try to plant both a flower/butterfly garden and a vegetable garden

      1. A good shovel 2. A heavy rake 3. a good pair of bypass pruners 4. A digging fork 5. A good hand shovel for planting seedlings
That combination will take care of most of your needs.

You should get cool season crops like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, and all of the greens started now. Warm season crops in about 3 weeks.

@@StoneyAcresGardening will do! BTW, I late-planted some potatoes last year, at your suggestion. ("Give it a try") They grew just as big as my others. Wahoo!
