Honestly, it kinda _was_ an indie game. Our team was mostly composed of fresh faces. Our VP of development, Doug Smith of Lode Runner fame, had talked to one of the high-ups at Square Japan at a conference and convinced him to hire him and a team of new people to make a game set in the west in the style of Mana.
It was an experiment, so he didn't get much budget and mostly hired fresh faces with little to no industry experience. For instance, I was fresh out of college with only some shareware success and bare-metal programming to my name, and I got hired as the _lead programmer,_ which just seems insane in retrospect. Similarly, Jeremy Soule was still an unknown _teenager_ when we hired him after hearing his very-impressive demo tapes. Indeed, all but one of the programmers was in their first game industry job, and the one was only on his second job. To his credit, Doug was pretty good at spotting diamonds in the rough and a lot of us went on to be sought-after talent and even a few major industry players like Jeremy. I'm often amazed when I look at our diaspora in retrospect.
Also, Square Japan funded the team, but didn't lend any of its own talent, physical/creative assets, or source code to us, nor did they offer much in the way of direction, criticism, or encouragement. Doug told me this was likely because it was common in Japanese companies not to get involved in a project's success or failure unless you were sure of either outcome. We were kinda like an indie studio with a hesitant angel investor/publisher of the highest caliber who lent us a section of its warehouse to work in.
And I'm grateful for that. I'm not sure there's a better way to enter the industry. We had to prove ourselves, but not while struggling to keep the lights on. Indie success stories like Celeste are amazing, but you know there had to be a lot of stress before things panned out.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear you liked it. Our reception at the time was pretty mixed and it's always gratifying to hear someone speak well of it years later. Thanks!

I was still a kid so I don't know how marketed it was and didn't even think about whether it was widely released or who it was made by, but I only came across it because a friend had it in a big stash of games and I don't actually known anyone else who played it or had heard of it. Still remember it among all the big ones and it's all good memories!

I’ve always loved Secret of Evermore since I played it back in the 90’s.
Your efforts have definitely paid off. I’m very thankful for the work you and the rest of the team did. The game is one of my favourite games of all time.
And I was about 22 years old when I first played it, so this is not coming from the nostalgic views of a child in the 90’s, I was a young adult that had played Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, FF VI, Link to the Past and Secret of Mana. I knew what great games were and, for me, Evermore was right there on the same level as those.
I could never understand the criticism of those who compare it unfavourably to Mana just because it has a similar layout and gameplay style. They are totally different experiences in the end.
And this was one of the very few rpg games that, like Earthbound, was not set in the usual medieval fantasy world, but in a very creative sci-fi world. An extremely interesting, very atmospheric, amazingly creative and funny game, and, for me, one of the very best games of the 16bit era and of my life.
      Thanks again, mate!

@@Nomadic-NerdsI prefer not to compare. I love both games, in retrospect. Mana was just plain magical when I took it home from the office to play through it and learn what sort of gameplay we were aiming for. Square Japan had really hit its stride by then and was producing respectably low levels of jankiness in its SNES titles and I had a great time playing it. It was meant to be, and was, very inspirational for me. We stood on the shoulders of giants, as the saying goes.

@@lehanderjau6269 Ah, you were almost my contemporary. I was ... hmm ... aged 24 through 27, I think, when I worked for Square. I had about five years on you. But you would have played Evermore at almost the same age I played Mana. Early to mid 20's are still formative years; your brain doesn't finish its structural development until age 25 or 26, I gather. I wonder if that's why we both had a strong reaction to a "Secret of" game around the same age. 🙂
It's actually amazing how I can start up Mana these days and the perky countryside music begins and I'm _right_ back there in my office chair, plugging it in for the first time, while my new boss, Doug Smith, stands to my left and tells me to play through it over the weekend. I can almost smell that subtle "office" scent, all plastic, MDF, and Formica, plus the weird hint of ¿ozone? you can get off of a CRT TV.
Yet I can seldom remember why I've come to the kitchen... 🙄
Anyway, thanks for your perspective. It's indeed a little different from most I've heard, which are usually people who played it as kids or discovered it recently as young adults sampling older fare. I'm glad you got something out of our little project. 🙂

A buddy of mine rented this game once and I loved it so much that it was one of the first games that I bought with my own (allowance) money. This was super expensive at around $80 USD. I was 15, so that was a metric ton of money, but boy, was it worth it. It's still one of my favorite SNES RPGs and arguably *one* of the best OSTs on the console. Jeremy Soule later went on to score the Elder Scroll series. I still occasionally go back to this game from time to time, and constantly have the OST in my music rotation.

I totally loved this game as a kid, especially with how similar it was to Secret of Mana (one of my absolute favorite RPGs). I had a blast replaying Evermore a few years ago, and it brought back a lot of fond memories. Definitely a worthy playthrough.
That said, it does have a few flaws which can understandably deter players. The hit detection is terrible at times, the trading game in the market is rushed and not particularly intuitive for a first time player (especially if you haven't brought along extra key items from earlier), a few of the puzzles can be downright frustrating, and both the dungeon area and pyramid have well-known bugs that can softlock the game. Most memorably for me, the dog has a tendency to get fixated on sniffing out items which simply aren't there, leading one to think they're missing an item, then spending forever trying to find it (I'm someone that searches out absolutely every item possible).
This game probably deserves more praise then it usually gets, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

    • @ItsBillsFault
      @ItsBillsFault Před 7 měsíci +1

      > _"and both the dungeon area and pyramid have well-known bugs that can softlock the game"_
Sorry about that. 😬 We probably shaved off months or years of our lives during the final days/nights trying to get those areas working right under all conditions, and I think we'd all depleted our batteries to the point where we just weren't up to the task.
For what it's worth, it was actually much, _much,_ worse a few weeks before submission. We only had, like, 3 or 4 QA guys, and I think they were run ragged by testing those areas. We ought to have had twice as many people, because we shipped thinking we'd gotten pretty much all of the gotchas fixed and then found out there were still multiple ways to bone yourself.
We were very, _very_ tired, okay? 😅 It'd been weeks of going home at 2-3am and coming back at 9-10am, 7 days a week, because we had to make a manufacturing window for the xmas rush. Crunch is _bad,_ mmmkay? Young people are stupid to put up with it but they still do. The industry really needs to unionize or games will keep coming out buggy because management abuses the workers and the workers lose morale, drive, and their desire for excellence, sigh.

I was so pumped as a kid to see this at our local Phar-Mor for $5. Wasn't so pumped getting to that part of the game where you can get stuck and have to completely start over. I remember calling the Nintendo Hotline and the recording said if you'd try to complete this puzzle in a certain way and the game was then saved there was nothing to be done and you'd have to restart your adventure. I believe it was inside the pyramid. Sunken bridge that won't rise up again or something.
Anyways, would be very cool to see some kind of remake though I highly doubt they would see it as a profitable endeavor. Will just have to bust out the Snezz I guess.

As someone who owned the cart back in the day, I would never call Dr. Ruffleburg's experiment a must play myself. It's fun and interesting at times, but it is a slog at times too, with a fondness for mazes that can easily confuse the player, and an endgame that is just this side of weird incomprehensibility.
The Alchemy system is a GREAT take on the magic systems of other games, sort of like the Ultima Games(Which I wouldn't play until decades later myself), but more user friendly. However, by their nature they required a grind to get a spell up, and most 'zones' of the world had spells that their merchants favored.
The Bazaar is an inspired, interesting way to do an item trading system. It also is broken as heck at times, as about half the items don't do what they claim, or are always in effect so it makes no difference.
The combat is FANTASTIC, with a push and pull you won't see in any other game thanks to the way the stamina bar works. But it also has some real down turns, and since each weapon requires its own leveling, you'll either have to grind each time, or just ignore half of them, which since each weapon type comes with its own unique Level 3 you might never see it, especially in the Axe category thanks to how soon after you get all four axes you'll get the spears, which have a longer reach, and all but one does more damage.
I'm a fan of almost everything I mentioned, and the Player2/Dog being overpowered was great, honestly, as it turned what could have been an annoying videogame helper into an actual help in some combats.
That being said, you will wind up with a bad taste in your mouth at the end, as the final boss/zone is kind of a wash, obviously rushed too, and the ending itself is weird in its tonality, trying to be melancholy and meaningful...in a game that has the lead constantly quip at people, and quote really bad b-movies(Mars Needs Lumberjacks has stayed with me for years now).

My favorite games tend to be games that you are immersed into and experience. SOE is no exception and I believe the music and environmental sounds were a huge part of making it that. It's also such a unique fantasy world that has a lot of mystery to it. It introduced me to the action RPG genre and easily became my favorite game experience and favorite game at the time. To this day it is one of my favorite games OAT. There are so many great things about the game. For example, I loved the humour in it as well. I've often wondered if the devs were actually steering in a different direction for the end boss. If I remember right that creepy face that shows up once or twice in the game doesn't have much of an explanation as to what it is or why it exists. I believe there's even a secret code or secret room you can access to fight it in the last world. 🤔 And I think the purpose was for the game to be 2 player similar to how Mana was multi-player but if correct there wasn't enough room for it.

If you are not fast enough and don't have your alchemies leveled up you can redo all the game^^ and that was my first time^^ I ranged and protect the guide in plastic covers and add hand drawing maps of the forests to it, where to finds alchemies, what to buy or where to buy in the market in Noblia.. yes the words themselves are unspeackably lame to say that I love this game^^ ah and in french Podunk was changed to "Pontoise" a town near Paris and it doesn't sound or mean anything close to Podunk^^ I can't wait to play it with my son with the 2 players edition on rom, but after he played it alone..

I've tried to make contact with them to see if they are willing to free up or license the IP, but even as the lead programmer of the game, I can't even get them to talk to me, let alone discuss options. I thought Secret of Mana was a bit grindy, especially leveling magic, but it's nothing compared to Secret of Evermore. Everything is acheived through the most tedious means and repetitive actions. All the mazes can be summarized as "you took the wrong door/teleport try again.", combats are ruined by the terrible hit detection, alchemy is clunky and tedious AF... I was obsessed with this game as a young kid (born in 1990). My parents rented it once and something about it cemented in my memory and then for years I was obsessed with finding and playing it again. I would draw little comics about the game based on my somewhat inaccurate memory of it. After a few years they finally bought me a copy off ebay (sometime in 2000 when I was 9 or 10 years old)
Even with the weird bugs, this game is 100x better than Secret of Mana. I liked Secret of Mana as a kid but when I tried to replay it as an adult 10+ years ago I realised it's kind of shit. The party AI is garbage, they constantly get stuck on random shit like bushes and grass, which holds up the screen and gets you stunlocked and fucked in the ass over and over. I made it to the last dungeon and dropped the game.
Secret of Evermore though, this game has some weird balance issues and easily abused exploits but the atmosphere and setting are just so unique I don't even care about those at all. This was the world that got me obsessed as a 5-6 year old and I couldn't stop thiinking about it for years until I got my own copy of the game.
It's a fucking weird pairing but Secret of Evermore and Addams Family Values are the games with an atmosphere that just stuck to me like glue and I couldn't let go. Chrono Trigger is a very close second (and I obviously think CT is a wayyyy better game than either of those two, but the atmosphere of the aforementioned and how it influenced a young me are what I'm referring to)

Lol and yea, this is a game that also really stuck with me as a kid. The way a lot of retro RPGs that I would play back in the day would leave a lot to my imagination, similar to a really good book.
