Of musicians active in the 2010’s, it’s tough to find an act with a reputation as mixed and infamous as that of Jake McElfresh. Over time, his name has become synonymous with cancelled musicians and those who are a danger to the scene.
A glance at his wikipedia page will reveal a brief history of Front Porch Step as well as some of his “controversies”. But these scant few lines of text fail to showcase the depth and severity of his transgressions throughout his career.
So who is Jake McElfresh? And what made him fall so hard?

Hello there my mates, I hope you have all been well. I wanted to take a second to thank you all. This year has been crazy and this channel has reached heights I didn't think we'd reach so fast. I know words only go so far, but from the bottom of my heart, just know how thankful I am for all of you.

I usually find it’s often weak men who would call themselves feminist and project their morality down others throats on Twitter. I mean people are already doing it in the comments. Then blame the acts on “my anxiety and I’m depressed” when caught. The people who often yell or project the loudest of what they hate, usually are the ones doing it. Many of the reason I don’t buy into many of the moralistic claims these people think they believe. These aren’t jock types doing these acts. They’re mostly weak pathetic anxiety driven men who take an opportunity to place dominance on someone. I think the reason people project their morality so much on others is because it’s easy and allows those doing these horrible things the distraction from fixing themselves.

After watching his acoustic set i lined up at his merch table and was pumped to grab a shirt and talk to him. When it was my turn I picked out a shirt and as I'm pulling money out of my pocket I'm trying to say the typical your music helped me through rough times and i appreciate you spiel, he cuts me off mid sentence to say "The shirt is $20 not $15". I was well aware of that and was literally still hand deep in my pocket getting more money, he didn't even respond to what I said. The contrast of him being overly friendly with younger female fans in front of me compared to practically rushing me away is pretty creepy with the context.

If not we’ll... off to warp tour Also as gross and unfortunate all this is. Dudes also allowed to play guitar until the moment he’s thrown in jail 🤷🏻‍♂️. I think he should continue to play music. He’s great at it. If I owned a record company I wouldn’t get rid of him. That’s just not how the world works nor should it. Alll ppl need work and I’d be happy to help anyone get and maintain a job. Now if he’s convicted of a crime he can do time. And when he’s out. Back to music. But instead of getting mad at him having a job just get upset nobody brought an end to his behavior by pressing charges and get mad at his behavior but not that he continues to play music

If you liked FPS don’t be upset. You can find any local musician playing emo songs when shows start that suck just as much. I swear every show I go to has some shitty local dude playing acoustic songs that are never good just like FPS. “I’m fat, no ones ever liked me because I suck at everything. Cry for me then we can cry together....” 🤮🤮🤮

This one is very personal to me cause his album aware came out when I was feeling very depressed and going through alot of hard times, it felt like this cathartic experience that tackled directly alot of the stuff I was going through and I would find myself constantly listening to the album as a whole for a good month to the point where it became one of the only albums ive memorized the lyrics too. I was always looking foreword to how he might expand as an artist and was especially pleased by the direction his EP went with more produced music only for the harsh reality of how awful a person he was coming out shortly after, because of all that shit he pulled the album became tarnished to the point where those personal attachments feel dirty tied to a man like that. It ended up being the one of the few albums where I simply cant seperate the art from the artist due to how personal the album felt to him. It was an introspective album from an unfortunately very sick man and its impossible for me to shake that.
Havent listened to it since then, but despite my absolutely godawful memory, I still could sing the entirety of drown year right now even without hearing it in about half a decade

I remember becoming a fan as soon as Aware came out. Shit, I was at the AZ date for Pure Noise Tour jamming during his set.
I've been able to "Separate the Artist from the Music" before. But I just could not listen to him anymore. I never honestly looked into the texts. Though after seeing this, I stand by how I still feel about him.

As an acoustic/emo/indie, whatever you call it musician, who writes and records and performs very similar things to these people who have been outed as being abusive, manipulative, or being inappropriate with underage fans, its downright embarrassing to us who who make art similar to them. Writing overly emotional acoustic songs about personal things is a way to cope with our experiences, but using it to cope in negative ways sets up this scene for a lot of stereotypes. I hope these survivors get the help they need in order to safely move on.
This happens in my local scene as well, which sucks. One of my bands photographers, who is underage (like most of our members, including me at the time) was groomed by an adult man who was in the band we opened for. It’s so sad seeing people with power, especially musicians, take advantage of people with their power.

This is all so bad. Anyone under 18 do not talk to anyone you don't know in real life. Especially if the claim they're from a band or something else you look up to. They'll take advantage of you for one and for two, there's no way of verifying if they are actually who they claim to be anyways. If someone is in a band or popular in social media, etc., they're abusing their position of power to talk with you and probably abuse you.

Young people don't know what 'love' is. Growing up we called it 'puppy love', meaning it was all physical attraction and mutual narcissism. Most of the time, young love is dumb and loud, whirlwind passions, big talk and immature hearts and understandings.
When you don't win the genetic lotto, you carry a victim complex and you project it onto everyone, looking for confirmation in every action, word and even in silence. When nothing is wrong, you'll find something to BE wrong or you'll DO something wrong to sabotage what you're scared of. Today's generation thinks about themselves too much and they're BOMBARDED by input. Darkness seeks it's reflection constantly and to the defiled, all things are defiled.
