I’m also holding out hope for a physical DVD release, but I’ll be happy to see such creative and imaginative storytelling be rewarded with more opportunities to prove the myriad of applications that puppetry can be used for, outside of what would commonly be expected. I actually met Toby Froud a few years back in Beaverton Oregon when I was working at FedEx. I shipped his puppet he was sending to a friend in GB. I actually knew who he was and when I was starting, I get his name, first name, Toby - he has an accent so I was like (in my head) of course it's Toby. Well Toby! What's your last name TOBY!
I asked him politely for his last name, smiling from my thoughts.
      He said, Froud.
I immediately put 2 and 2 together with what he was sending and knew exactly who he was. My smile dropped instantly and I tried to remain professional but fanboyed a little.
I actually got his business card with this new dark crystal project he was working on on it.
I'm a fan. Of puppetry. So much so, I recognized your contribution to the dark crystal immediately. Which i thought was fantastic use of puppets doing puppetry. Brilliant.

"I feel like a bit of a fraud because I wear my puppets on all day without getting tired." More like someone who could be given the role of a consultant to solve and design out MSD issues in puppeteering!
As I heard a guitarist once say, instead of trying to make yourself fit the instrument, have an instrument customized just for you.
Henson Company's been doing it this way for over 40 years, and IMO could take a page from your book on making controls much more ergonomic.

    • @maxskellington910
      @maxskellington910 Před rokem

ehh I think it's less about design and more of that, the puppets he wears/works with are less physically straining. While yes it's important to do hand stretches, and hands are a part of the body that can get tired/strained as well, there's a HUGE difference between working w/ hand and finger puppets, and holding up something heavy on your arm for long periods of time, as well as having to be hunched over with a crooked neck.
The puppets of the Jim Henson company HAVE become a lot more ergonomic, however there is only so much they can do in that department before it starts limiting what the puppets are actually able to accomplish sadly. It seems to be a problem they're taking seriously tho considering they have physical therapists on site to check in w/ the puppeteers during every break!

When I was young, Jim Henson burst upon the puppet scene.
    First, unnamed, in a commercial.
Then, on the great Muppets show.
    He revolutionized the genre.
    Barnaby, you are revolutionizing puppetry.
It is amazing to see you working with the Jim Henson Company.
The thing you did, that is so amazing, is that you freed puppetry from the stage and studio.
You can take Dabchick wherever you go - shopping, to restaurants, parties, on trains, and to the beach.
It feels, at times, that Dabchick truly has a life of his own, separate from you.
BTW - Your newer creations are more challenging, I am sure, and more interesting from technical POV. But, Dabchick remains my favorite. I enjoy him and like him, almost as if he were real. Since he is a window into your serpentine mind, in a way, he is real. He is you.

THAT SCENE WAS SO AMAZING, I STILL HAVE CHILLS WHEN I WATCH IT
It's so cool you worked on it! I've been subscribed to you for a while now and got reallh excited when I found out you helped on that scene!! It makes the scene extra special and also honestly super recognisable and I'm not sure how I never figured it out while watching the show!

Omg yaaas the dark crystal! I watched the original when I was about 5. It has some plot holes but i liked the movie still. I haven't seen the series yet tho. I just watched it the other day and the movie is so awesome even after not seeing it for 10years! I will have to check out the series on netflix. Thanks if it weren't for this video I wouldn't know about it also #loveSkeksis

I remember binge watching The Dark Crystal Netflix series and seeing the full-figure hand puppet segment and immediately thinking "That reminds me a lot of Barnabydixon's puppetry"
Then to see this it makes me so happy to see I was right! It's so enlightening to see you took part with the production!

  • @mitchellshuttleworth3204

I'm going to be honest I had never heard of Barnaby before until I watched the episode with his puppetry. Your puppeteering skills are beyond imaginative, I thought I've seen all form of the art from normal hand puppets to the suitmation of the old Godzilla movies. If Jim Henson himself were alive today and saw your puppeteering, I think he would have shook your hand. Hope to see season 2 soon!

The entire production of the Dark Crystal is so majestic. The art is wonderful, the performance or the puppeteers and voice actors were flawless. It's all art and I just love it all.

My favorite part of the series. Also, not too sure if many noticed it, but you trying putting down the fire with the gelfling puppet stomps was hilarious.

This is amazing! It's a shame I'm not able to watch the series, but man, I'm so happy for you! I've been watching you for a while. You've inspired me to get back into puppetry. The Dark Crystal amazed me when I was little, and gave me a deeper appreciation for puppetry. That's amazing that you got this opportunity!

I've only just discovered your work today but I need to say that you were part of my favorite scenes in that whole show! skekGra and urGoh's puppet show story was the most memorable of the show for me. The perfectly fluid and amazing puppetry, it was hard NOT to get sucked into the origin story! I absolutely loved it and you are incredible at what you do, Mr. Dixon.

  • @brianneruiz-mccarty9890

I am so proud that you were not only approached by Jim Henson's company, but cast as an integral story-telling part of the movie. Congratulations!

I saw it and remembered you mentioning that you had a patent on your puppet styles, and I hoped that they had either licensed it, or that it was you rather than someone ripping you off. I'm glad to know it was you doing the puppetry. Great job, and congratulations.

I puppeteer a Sven costume for my high school’s Frozen play. People don’t realize how physically demanding even after preparing puppeteering is.

I love that there are unabashed hands and bodies and strings and sticks visible in some of the scenes. I know it’s not the point, but it reminds me that it’s all puppetry and that’s incredible to me.

The moment I saw that scene I screamed bc I recognized your style of puppetry instantly! So proud that a CZcamsr got to be involved ❤️
