    In today's video I talk about the Pros and the Cons of the university of California, Irvine. Many people are curious to know more about UCI and want to know about the good and the bad, so I thought this video would be perfect to make. With everything going on in the world right now, I have been staying busy and distracted and creating this youtube video and other content is an outlet for me. I separated the video into Social Cons, Academic Cons, Social Pros, and Academic Pros so that way you all have a broader perspective of UC Irvine. If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comment section below so that I can try an help you out!

    Yeah, I'm finishing up my final year at UCI. The social life is definitely not as active as other schools but in my experience, most people are super cool. In terms of professors, a lot of time depends on the major. The business professors are generally all awesome and care about their students greatly. For philosophy and sociology, most professors are also accomodating and caring. I think at the end of the day, you can learn a lot about yourself and grow at this school if you are willing to make the effort to find what you need.

    You are 100% right about UCI professors not really caring about their students wellbeing. I've had professors yell at me or turn me away when asking for help in the class. I've heard other student say it is because the professors are payed for their research and not for their teaching unfortunately. So they don't care if kids are learning as much as their research going well.

    1) spectrum ( one of the school shuttles takes you) district
    2) bunch of beaches 15 minute drive (Newport, Costa Mesa, crystal cove, Laguna beach beach) 20-30 Huntington Beach
    3) bars & clubs Newport, Santa Ana, Anaheim
    4) Disneyland
    5) Amtrak ( LA, SD 1 hr, bus picks you at the center & leaves you at the station)
    I did party an okay amount, just gotta know the right people. I wasn’t part of a sorority or new any frat people, so it’s doable. The only bad side is you need a car to get around

A relatively small amount of students live on campus and most live in neighboring cities. Quarter system so classes will be 10 weeks instead of 16 weeks like semester systems, so you don't have that much time to pick up the material. Great video. All the best

    I think the major restriction is for the students major in that to get the priority when enrolling in classes. The major restriction will be moved out eventually. Then, you can choose the course. This fall quarter I enrolled in dance3 which had had a major restriction, though I major in computer science and engineering. Another thing I want to say is that as an incoming freshmen, I really need a four year plan!! I was told that the advisors would only take the initiative to instruct students to choose courses when they are freshmen.

    • @zeemthedream
      @zeemthedream  Před 3 lety +1

    The Public Health Sciences department at uci has a 4 year plan for their students. Maybe we can start by helping our departments come up with a guided 4 year plan or press our departments advisors to! For the sciences like bio, chem, etc., there are multiple professors for each course so I’d say some majors are restrictive bc of number of professors available but some aren’t. But I can definitely agree that classes restricted to majors only sucks and by the time the restriction is lifted, most of the classes are taken. But to be fair, I would be pissed if my spot in a chem or bio class I absolutely needed for my major was taken by a student of an unrelated major. So there’s no good way to look at that.

    • @zeemthedream
      @zeemthedream  Před 3 lety

      Yea it definitely can be tough when a class you really need is a full due to restrictions. Also, I agree a guided 4 year plan would be very helpful for all departments!

    I want to add that it’s hard to make friends at this school. It’s definitely not a social school by any means so if you want to make friends you really need to get involved somehow such as by joining a club or greek life (that’s how I made my friends). Or else you really are gonna feel kind of lonely here like I did when I transferred to the school. A couple of things contribute to this problem but I think the main one is that UCI is a big commuter school so lots of students who go here live locally and therefore commute to campus instead of living on campus. I had a roommate that lived nearby and would go home every single weekend. Which leads me to my next point- the campus is super dead/ quiet on the weekends. So really if you are super social person and are outgoing/ like making friends and you aren’t just in college to get a degree, you should take this into consideration. Personally I moved from Northern California so I had to stay there on weekends and sometimes holidays

    I also want to do computer science at UC Irvine. From what you have seen through the students in the department, does the college care more about extracurriculars, or is it focused on a cutthroat sat and GPA style for students who got in? Also are the professors in the computer science department well known in the field?

      Also how much you pay for college varies for every student based on instate tuition, out state tuition, financial aid, scholarships, etc.

      Fasho, so University Town Center has a lot of different restaurants as well as like a target and Trader Joe’s. TransLoc Rider Mobile App downloaded! I´m still in my home country, ready to book my flight. This is all very helpful. Thanks! A couple of questions, though: What´s the best and cheapest way to get from LAX to Irvine? Also, my Campus Village lease starts on Sept. 25, which is the day when orientation for international students starts. If I arrive before that date, do you suggest I stay in a hotel? Do you know if UCI offers other options that can be paid for by the day? Again, the info you´ve provided has been very helpful.

    • @zeemthedream
      @zeemthedream  Před 3 lety +2

      To get to Irvine from LAX, I suggest seeing if there are any shared rides through facebook or getting a shared lyft/uber. Also, here is the website for more information for transfer student orientation orientation.uci.edu/#transfer . Unfortunately, I don't think UCI has any daily living options so a hotel might be your best solution. Hope this helps you out man!
