    My dad was a paranoid schizophrenic! He had a great sense of humor! Was a wonderful father on his medication. Even off his medication he never harmed me, even though he was delusional and heard voices (he had names for these voices). He was very loving and kind. The problem was when he was on his meds he felt like he was better and didn't need them anymore! My mother was the abusive one! My schizophrenic dad was the much better parent!

    Thank You Dr. Goertz, I'd appreciate more videos on work with (especially) schizophrenic and bipolar patients. Maybe you can talk about some of your experiences with threatening situations and how you de-escalated them. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and opnions with us. It's very helpful! 😊

    My fiance has schizophrenia. Sadly, I have become the object of many of her delusions. We've gone from planning our life together, her excitement to take my last name in marriage, wanting a great life with me, to I am going to harm her, I'm unhappy with her and she can no longer talk to me. I've seen these episodes come on in minutes even right after we've just spent the most wonderful day together. This is happening now. We've talked once for 20 minutes in the past 57 days. One time this went on for 70 days before she texted me plus another 13 days between that one word text ("Hi") and when we actually talked again. This is so difficult to endure. She has anosognosia and when things get right again, I need to figure out how to get her to a doctor. In the meantime I'm learning all I can through videos and books about this disorder. This is going to be a part of the rest of my life. Hopefully. She's an amazing woman but this illness is robbing her of so much and it's robbing us of precious time we have left to live.

      @@goertzpsychiatry9340 Thank you for your videos helping to spread some knowledge on this and that. If you ever feel like doing anything else on schizophrenia/psychosis -- such as how a loved one/caregiver should talk to a person experiencing delusions -- it will be appreciated. I am subbed. Have a nice weekend.

    During all my years as a diagnosed schizophrenic I was dehumanized by every single person in my life. The only thing worse was the fear. Everyone is scared of you.
    It was living Hell. Though I am no longer psychotic I will never fully recover from those years of abject humiliation.

      Ma'am why do feel interested in people's view in you. why not putting them behind.
      You can be fully satisfied and effective without them. You can even bypass them and be ahead of them.
      Please be sure that you will be winner in God's caring will.
      Besides that, please pray for Gaza. They are homeless in winter, hungry, and frightened under US bombs.

    I'm trying to connect more to these patients, as a long time interest in psychiatry it's only been the past 2 months I've ever had any real exposure to psychosis (working as a tech). It's still challenging to have the same level of empathy, even though it is the historical bread and butter of psychiatry. I find myself losing patience much more often with them, and I'm not proud of that.
    Especially when they've been in the hospital for months And it becomes obvious that they will never be able to take care of themselves. It's hard to keep hope and care when something feels like a lost cause. But maybe that's just how I'm coping with the grief.
    I'm hoping more interaction and education such as your videos will continue to help develop me as a provider.

    Thank you for talking about this issue I have bipolar disorder this is funny to me even though it shouldn’t be because the psychward is like home it’s like the only time I’m fully aware I’m surrounded by fellow neurodiverse people (that’s the bizarre statements that catch you off guard that we make that he’s talking about)

    Schizophrenia is terrible. I have met some people with very real mental health issues. Not sure any drugs or therapy could ever help them- perhaps manage some symptoms. Their issues go very deep. Drugs and Food and Trauma are often the genesis of such issues. Sadly, there are often no easy fixes.

    Thank you for another informative video! I was wondering, is there a difference in the type (content-wise) of hallucinations usually encountered in patients with schizophrenia and those secondary to alcohol withdrawal?

    • @goertzpsychiatry9340
      @goertzpsychiatry9340  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi Elina, I’m not sure about differences in the content of auditory hallucinations, however based on my experience visual hallucinations can be more prominent in alcohol withdrawal than in schizophrenia. Peter Goertz

    Hi Dr. Goertz. There’re some modern psychologists who disagree with the approach to mental illness of psychiatry. I personally think those arguments are not evidence-based. Would you like to share your opinion on the matter?

    Hi Dr. Goertz, I asked a question on your last video about your German side. I too am German but grew up in NYC and want to study medicine. I'm considering going to Germany, as getting a degree there only takes 6 years and is much cheaper, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get into a German uni as somewhat of an outsider. I was wondering if you have preference for either the American or German route to becoming a physician? Love your videos!

    • @goertzpsychiatry9340
      @goertzpsychiatry9340  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi Anand, I went to high school and medical school in Germany. At the time the German medical schools admitted a certain percentage of foreigners(I was a US citizen). A potential downside of attending medical school in Germany is, that US residency programs tend to prefer graduates of US medical schools.
