ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on CZcams and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

I should add that I was away for a couple days filming with Landward so the sheep wasn’t taken for a PM which is what i’d have liked to do with her. That said i’ve had sheep die in similar circumstances before and PM showed acute fluke. 👍
Hopefully you've court it time n no more sheep get sick n die. Farming isn't easy.

It happens mate. So is it worth using that other fluke drench in 6-7 weeks after this dose to help knock it off? Also do you think your over dosing in the past, (90kg) has contributed to your resistance or just an area thing? Love your work mate, keep on plugging the good stuff, handy to know!

Unless you have a way to dose more accurately. Especially if there’s a lot of size variance in the flock, because nearly double-dosing isn’t good either.

I wish everyone took as good care of their sheep as you. There are currently two lost sheep on my drive in what the farmer next door calls a bad state. There are bits of wool hanging off them, they have no tags or sprayed on markings and just wander around my village. We doubt they are treated for anything and getting help for them is terribly difficult because we can't say for certain that the person believed to be the owner is definitely responsible due to lack of tags. If those sheep have fluke, they won't do well. Just like my pot plants they've eaten and my drive that's covered in a huge amount of sheep poo!
This was very informative. Sad to lose a ewe, but she alerted you to a problem. As always, a great video Cammy. It is great to see how slick that System is for dosing, holding, weighing and rotating the sheep. I am glad it is reducing the wear and tear on your body. 👍👍😁
Me too from Australia, with 2 Scottish Grandparents and one Welsh one and a Sassenach thrown in. My father's first job after completing a Diploma in Agricultural Science from Gatton College in Queensland, was shearing merinos out west using hand shears. This was in the early 1900s. When I was a youngster, he kept up his shearing skills by cutting my hair and trimming with, you guest it, with hand clippers. Love your channel and seeing the different types of sheep breeds and locations. Getting to understand your accent too.

I don't consider you talking about a specific brand of farm equipment to be shilling it.
If you're enthusiastic about something that works, just because you got a good deal on it doesn't change the fact that you like the product, how it changed your work load, how it works and that it saved your money. It's great that you can then pass that experience along so others can also get those same benefits.

Blood tests are great on sheep. Gives you vital information on your flock that you couldn't pick up on otherwise so great advice from you Cammy. Your sheep will benefit greatly from the treatment you gave them.

It's a great product! I enjoy seeing what it does, the different tasks, especially as you become comfortable using it. The weighing and adjusting is so helpful. With a good dog, 1 person, even if older or physically weaker, can handle their flock. Really helpful to watch.

Your sheep handling system is just awesome. What a helper it is for you. Saves on the stress of the sheep greatly. As soon you were saying about wet conditions my mind thought of liver fluke also. That comes from snails right? It's surprising what info the mind stores without you thinking about it. 💘 🐑 🐑 🐕 Scotland 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

When I saw the dead sheep I immediately thought flukes so I read some of the comments and was sorry to see I was right. Sorry for your troubles, mate. Suggest strategic deworming. From the South Shore of Lake Superior, in Wisconsin USA.

people who are watching and have never been involved in farming don't understand because sheep are a animal that is prayed on by predators like goats as well do not show that they are sick so unless you get a test batch done of your flock/s each year you don't know what they are need and they do what farmers call "just lay down and die" They don't show sickness, but they are and just die - well done Cammy getting the vet in for the yearly check its a cost but well worth the investment - the Te Pari system is great and it is another Kiwi company you are using like Gallagher, Swan Dry
I am amazed how much more productive you can be with that equipment. Also so much easier on the body! People don’t realize how physical farming is.

Remember that most animals’ instinct, _especially_ prey animals, is to hide any sign of illness.

love the new blue sheep gate handler thingie... not into sheep or livestock, but when I first saw your channel, you were sitting on a milk bucket and handling sheep on some 1930 scale and your most significant piece of sheep-catching gear was either your legs or the old battered trailer that you fed them through manually. So when you're counting costs for hour dosing gun and TePari --you ought to review time efficiency as major factor. Also, you're not putting nearly the amount of stress on your back which means you are able to withstand longer or bigger loads of work and recover more quickly. so your personal fatigue factor is now greatly reduced. These things are just as significant or greater than money saved on bulk dosing. Think these are significant gains and good reasons for your endorsements.-- as for your intro, maybe just give us short clip of a local piper or band you find at any one of your fairs, shearing competitions. We're happy for the kids intros-or even just a nice drone clip of countryside or sheep jumping through a gate or your dog, Meg.. just be authentic and something simple will do. There are some really classic clips of you chasing and losing a sheep that would be great intro. Am sure folks can volunteer you some classic clips for intro.

We'd be beside ourselves if you opened with a clip with you getting tripped up by a crafty sheep or Meg doing her own thing rather than "lay doown". always a quad riding dog... just so many classic memorable clips that epitomize "Sheep Game".

He's a shearer... yet to meet one past 60 who hasn't been crippled by doing that job in Australia (Sorry Cammy!). Certainly an ace machine however and always a good idea to reduce wear and tear when possible.

I also really like that you are calling yourself lucky to have it, where in my opinion it is down to your hard work and your natural ability to make CZcams content. I will be giving a hand to my local farmer on Tuesday with dosing, I’m sure if I mention weight the sheep before dosing I’ll get a funny look 😂. The whole Te Pari system makes sense but you need big pockets and a large flock to justify it. I would love one but I need a bit of land and few sheep first 😂. Great content as always. That is a fantastic handling crate ,i only look after a small flock of 500 blackies now but used to have a farm of my own with 2000 ewes wish that set up had been available then ,ranks with a quad as the best invention in past 30years

Really enjoying your videos on the scientific aspects of farming. Not over dosing your ewes must really help combat resistance issues. It's amazing the results you can get just by having all the data available to you.
Resistance is more likely to be caused by underdosing (which is why he’s previously been dosing based on the heaviest sheep rather than the average), but overdosing certainly isn’t good for the overall health of the sheep.
Wrong! Resistance is a result of UNDER-dosing. Back to basic biology for you, SMFH!

Yes I did find it to be informative! Liver fluke is serious business in your neck of the woods (I don't know about mine, too cold I think). Sorry about your sheep that passed. Like Sandi Brock, it's the unpleasant side of the business you're in. She just lost a lamb to pneumonia (her vet has taught her the basics of doing a PM). She took the essential organs out, spread them out on a table and took pictures to send to her vet.
She's also had to do a couple of emergency c-sections. She tries to get her ewes induced into labour, however, sometimes the ewe passes before the dexamethazone does its thing, and poor Sandi has to open the ewe up and try to save the lambies. Sometimes she's successful, thanks be to God. They're a little premature sometimes, but with some very close supervision she can get them through.
I'm a retired Registered Nurse, so the medical things don't bother me too much. Keep up the good work.
You mentioned that your system saves your knees -- I have had two dicky knees. They have both been replaced. so I've got some metal to show to the airport metal detectors.
Now to something more pleasant -- I just saw Sandi's last episode where you and Charlie, her shearer, met and had your little chat via the telephone. I think you were both enjoying the chat. I love it that you got in a dig about his ambidextrosity -- how he shears with both hands. "You're a legend!"

Cammy, great to see this video.(not that ye ve lost sheep) but the accurate weighing, and dosing has to be the way forward.... after speaking to my vets in early august i was advised to dose my ewes for fluke to reduce the adult fluke and subsequent burden later on in the season ie now ..this was despite the drier than average year..and was something i hadnt been expecting..so mine are getting what will be a second dose this half of the year,along with a trace element bolus ( forage and soil samples identified likely deficiencies not bloods ...that may be something i also need to do) .It`s good to share info and anything that improves the health and welfare of the flock has to be good for the bottom line too......keep up the guid work

So many folks in the USA are going back to homesteading and using goat’s milk. When land size doesn’t allow for a cow. Maybe worth doing a video?
