The lazy want all the social programs until they get forced to pay for them, then they say hey, that’s not fair! I’m working harder than so and so! Conservatives are not interested in government control. They want less of it. They want only laws that pertain to everyone. No special interest groups. Special interest group laws should be down the chain in the State laws. They are not against cultures and intellectuals. They just don’t want to support division. A unified general keep it simple form of law. The problems we all suffer from now is all the special interest peoples grabbing at funding that doesn’t benefit all.

+Aaron S Sorry that you have difficulty with history/reality in regard to the failed conservative ideology . Possibly you have been reading or listening to the radicals which can be found on both sides of the isle. Bottom line here is that conservatism has never been a success in any country of the world at any time. The 30 + yrs since the election of Reagan clearly has proven that the trickle down economics thinking of the right where they claim " a rising tide lifts all boats" has proven to be a failure yet they still attempt to sell such thinking to the small minded. In that 30+ yr. period conservatives got exactly what they claimed was best when the wealthy saw a 275% increase of income verses 40% for the middle class. The result was not a rising tide lifting all boats but instead a worse economy. Such thinking by conservatives goes against what any economist without a political agenda well tell us which is that the middle class, not the wealthy, buy the vast majority of goods and services and anything that takes from the middle class hurts the economy. Consider what happened in Europe when in a knee jerk decision resulting from the financial crisis caused by what even conservative Al Greenspan admitted was the result of "flawed conservative ideology". Many European countries cut social programs that took from the middle class and the result was double/triple dip recession. Conservatives in the U.S. attempted to double down on the problems they caused by cutting social programs citing the same study as Europe for proof. Paul Ryan among others cited the study at every opportunity until is was later proven wrong by a grad school student now they no longer want to talk about the study. If conservatives had their way we would have suffered the same double /triple dip recession as Europe. The flawed conservative ideology conservative Al Greenspan spoke of was in regard to OTC Derivatives which were the leading cause of the financial crisis. 10 yrs prior B. Born of the Clinton Administration warned congress that if conservative ideology prevailed and OTC derivatives remained unregulated a financial crisis would result. Since at the time $ was being made until it wasn't Greenspan and cronies convinced congress Born was wrong and that conservative failure cost the U.S. economy 20+ trillion dollars not to mention what it did to the world economy. And still even today conservatives embrace the same policies that caused the problem. Conservatives continuously push for tax breaks for wealthy so called job providers yet when such people get tax breaks it doesn't translate to jobs. The reason is quite simple because the wealthy are not the job providers. The consumers are the real job providers. History clearly shows the economy prospered when the top marginal tax rate for the wealthy was 90%. The reason was not because of the high taxes but that the middle class were doing well at the time. As previously mentioned the middle class buys the vast majority of goods and services. Even if your job is making corporate jets for the Walton family which owns Walmart or for the CEO of GM in both instances most of the companies products are sold to the middle class not the wealthy. Warren Buffett and Mitt Romney are not buying the vast majority of cheap plastic junk and Fruit of the Loom undies from Walmart and GM sells far more pickup trucks and cars to the masses than Cadillacs to Mitt Romney . Ronald Reagan tripled our debt , Dubya double it again and if you understand how government pays its bills you should realize that the debt under Obama was the result of the financial crisis caused by "flawed conservative ideology "where less revenue came in to pay the bills and as a result $ had to be borrowed to make up the difference. The financial crisis came BEFORE Obama was elected. Obama had less new spending than any president in recent history. Conservatives claim Obama does not go by the constitution but cannot supply specifics. They claim his executive orders are excessive yet he has issued fewer than any president since Grover Cleveland who left office in the 1890's. They claim Hillary is to blame for what happened in Benghazi but after 1 independent investigation and 7 or 8 investigations by conservative all they have to show is millions of dollars in costs and you and I got the bill $. During the Clinton yrs conservatives wasted 70 million dollars on White Water and found NOTHING ! You and I paid for that as well. How about the 50 + million dollars wasted on congress voting to repeal O Care or the 24 Billion dollars lost when conservatives shut down the government when they were holding no cards and proved they don't know how the legislation they are responsible for works. Why did they not realize that after O Care became law O could not have repealed it even if he wanted ? They looked like fools and attempted to turn attention to a poor roll out of O Care which later met ALL of its goals. Bottom line here is that most of you haven't a clue as to what REALLY caused the financial crisis, don't understand that social programs do not equal communism and support a conservative party that doesn't support you or what is best for our country. Conservatives would not vote against the billions of dollars given to big oil each year and really have no problem with entitlements which was proven by their passage of Medicare Prescript Part D in 2003 by a conservative house/senate and signed by a conservative president Dubya. Obviously that entitlement was a gift to big pharma costing you and I a trillion dollars. The conservative architect of the plan was rewarded for that gift by big pharma with a very lucrative job and quit politics. Wake up and stop being part to the problem. Ignorance is the enemy of democracy and the small minded conservatives have ignorance in spades.

      Keith Hughes
I learned a lot about governance by doing comparative analysis. I honestly felt like I learned more about political systems in college by studying ways other countries do things. It gives students an opportunity to break out of their indoctrinations, without feeling like they are being unpatriotic or whatever.
The thing I feel like I need to point out, regarding the matrix thing, is that it is comprised of an average of the respondents positions. What I found interesting from studying other countries political systems was how much their Authoritarianism, or Libertarian, Economic liberalism, or Control, were so dependent on the particular issue.
I'll give an example: There was a study done on organ donor rates in Europe. Lots of theories had been proposed that had to do with North/South religious behavior, or social conservative views. The study argued that the strongest reason for the odd pattern of organ donors was whether the country used an opt-in, or opt-out approach. It had so much more to do with seemingly innocuous policy than any of this political spectrum stuff.
So to try and close out before I ramble on too much. Where would The Netherlands fall? Is it a conservative country, or liberal? I think there is a lot to learn by looking at other countries as a way to look at the U.S.
Sorry, I was a bit all over the place there...........I agree talk about Europe!

We already knew this and have been saying it for years but only recently have one of Reagans top men came out and admitted it. With the government taking away union jobs that many black people had and outsourcing them over seas the black people began looking for other means to provide which happened to be drugs, but then we were demonized and jailed because of it. This forced women to be single parents, they needed help due to a corrupt system that the Conservative party was so proud of.

Conservatives also acknowledge, or focus on, the idea that human beings have a capacity to do evil. This is why Conservatives are weary about change in the Government, the movements of so-called "science" and teachings of atheism that is ever-so-present in today's society. It's not that Conservatives fear knowledge, nor do some doubt their social values, but rather, it can be argued that Conservatives value the foundational values of the Law. They value and encourage being anchored to a moral compass, instead of the movement away from the Law towards defining for ourselves what is "evil and good". I myself, if it hasn't already been apparent, am a Conservative. I see the values of some Conservatism (perhaps, not all) as the recognition that mankind can and does do evil things, and the removal of society's tie to a moral foundation can lead to an immoral, self-righteous (meaning people who see and define themselves as right and faultless by their own efforts) society in which, due to the lack in morality, can lead to devastation and most likely poverty.

Leaving societal beliefs in the hands of EACH INDIVIDUAL FIRST, is a conservative. If many individuals are allowed to believe in a societal view they may move forward in it, but there should always be an open door. This is the basis of the founding belief system. In the least amount, societal views (not law) are what change the human heart, and institute real change in the land. Liberals institute laws which bind hands, bind hearts and prevent change. For example, slavery, or sharia law is liberal. It binds peoples rights, prevents change in societal norms. Instituting law won't change the society, allowing PEOPLE INDIVIDUALLY without being FORCED into giving or believing one mindset, and to chose with TRUE LIBERTY, will allow the human soul to transcend and find it's proper way to higher societal norms. A key example of this is Jesus. He died fighting the establishment, and was not allowed to be an individual because the individual had no power due to liberal views and instituted laws. Yet Jesus stood for equal rights for all, freedom of expression, and new ideas which didn't fit.

Keith, I disagree with your characterization of Conservatives as closer to authoritarianism than liberals. In my view, both groups wish to use government power to reorder the social landscape to fit their worldview. Is not Obama using government power to promote his ideaology with executive orders at the institutions of the federal government and beyond? I would view Obama as at least as authoritarian as Bush. Religion is not a special class of belief that pushes one toward authoritarianism, and in fact, as the left have instilled themselves as "The party of Government" i.e., public government unions / employees and government dependents being their primary constituencies, I would suggest to you that modern liberals are actually closer to authoritarianism the modern conservatives. Modern conservatives want to reduce the size, power and scope of the US government. Modern so called "liberals" want to increase it the size, power and scope of government and use it to recast society according to their idealogy. ..

Do you even know what system they use in Europe (which is a Continent, not a fucking country). What they use there would be liberalism here. The left here is not the left there. Just like Conservationism is not like it is there or even Canada. The Republican Right in the US is 100x more right than the right in Europe. Their Conservatives would be considered liberals. Liberalism, based on the location, is very different. Europe is a very progressive area. Some of their best nations are eve socialist. And look at classical American Liberalism. That does work and is in synch with working political ideologies in Europe.

That chart (drawn up by a libertarian, btw) has a weakness or a missing scale, in that conservatives come out being conservative (right) on the economic scale but pretty much in the center between authoritarianism and anarchy, as we believe in both liberty AND law and order. So the missing element is the social conservatism scale, the belief in morality, tradition, religion, etc. The social conservative right isn't really represented in that chart. And it really is the area in which libertarians are most like liberals.

This is why I never got the "duality" between conservativism and liberalism that we often see framed in politics, at least here in America. If anything progressivism (or social justice progressivism) seems more like a proper antithesis to conservatism, with each focusing more on advocating for some form of government involvement to uphold shared ideologies and values. I think libertarianism is a better parallel to liberalism, as both put more emphasis on freedom over cultural ideas, even if their methods of obtaining it are different.

I'm under the impression that "liberal" vs. "conservative" generally regards a stance towards government; should governmental intervention be applied liberally or conservatively? The same spectrum can be applied towards anything: do you agree with living and letting live, or do you prefer to enforce your ideals upon the world?
Something that confuses me is how "conservatives" tend to be liberal with telling other people how to live and "liberals" tend to more accepting of people who don't conform to the norm....I would expect it to be the other way around, with "conservatives" accepting gay marriage/drug legalization/personal freedoms/etc and "liberals" being proponents of proscribing whatever is deemed socially unacceptable.
Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.
