    Hey Everyone,
    In today's video, we're myth-busting intakes! As we said before, we want to be 100% honest with our testing... and today, we're being brutally honest. In this video, we will be doing 3 baseline runs and we will be averaging them together. Then, we will be doing 3 more runs with the intake installed. Now, to be transparent, the car was limiting power a little (perhaps torque limit?), so the test isn't 100% accurate, but I think this still shows a pretty accurate view of what to expect. Most people buy intakes for looks and the incredible sound and they know that there are typically minimal gains, so most of you won't be surprised by the results.

      At factory power you get no gain what so ever the stock intake was design perfectly for the factory power level you may get a few couple of hp with drop in filter when you start flashing the engine but intake mods only come into play when your talking about big power mods like turbo swap and built motor.

    Just my opinion, you guys should have done one of the dyno runs with the hood closed for a real-life simulation. The intake is not really heating soaking as the hood is open and the fans are hitting that area. But nonetheless still a good test!

    • @munners0852
      @munners0852 Před rokem +2

      I wouldn't agree, if the Dyno was doing draggy times the heat soak would be relevant. Once a car is up and moving the cooler outside air soon clears the heat in the engine bay around the intake. If anything the reading is probably less as the fan speed doesn't increase the faster the wheels are turning on the dyno. I could be wrong and the fan speed creates an air flow like you're going over 100mph.

    Closed box intake is better on the car. (B58 Specifically) My 340 heat soaks big time because the turbo and and exhaust manifold are on the same side as the intake causing the intake to suck up all the hot air while hood is closed. Closed box intake is the way to go.

      HEAT WRAP AND COAT THE DOWNPIPE.....THAT WAY HEAT ONLY HAS 1 PLACE TO GO......OUT THE EXHAUST ....PLUS THE BENEFITS THAT COME ALONG WITH WRAPPING IT....LESS HEAT THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE AND WIRE BAY PERIOD....MORE TURBO RESPONSE TIME AND POWER

  • @Timilias
    @Timilias Před 4 lety +2

    Cool video, but I see one issue - you keep the hood open which allows more fresh air in. What makes the open intakes not good (safe for those that have closed - or at least semi-closed like MST design) is that they sit right above turbo, exhaust manifold and downpipe - which is a massive heatspot which is then trapped by the hood.

      Fastblade Productions Agreed. The ECU won’t know to add more fuel to the additional air the engine is receiving right away. In fact the addition oxygen mixed with the SAME amount of fuel would throw off the Air Fuel ratio and likely decrease power. This would be amazing of Brian to test as well, the “myth” of does your ECU really adapt to the mods (which in my opinion, yes it certainly does)

    I did my M335i's intake and immediately noticed loss of torque -even on MHD S2 - but better top end -As long as ambient temp is BELOW 70F- honestly the awesome intake noise and blow off are the main reason to keep it.

  • @alw757
    @alw757 Před 4 lety +2

    pretty sure the intake is messing with the airflow dynamics over the MAF sensor, sending wonky reading to the ecu and cutting power accordingly. not sure about the b58, but on the n55 the stock air box has fins to direct / straighten the airflow before it reaches the MAF. I haven’t yet seen an aftermarket intake that integrates these airflow straighteners

  • @ArtemDzhadzha
    @ArtemDzhadzha Před 4 lety +2

    There was no myth :) intake only reduces the vacuum before the turbos. It makes a lot of sense for naturally-aspirated engines because of more airflow, but turbo engines build the same boost regardless of the intake. What it gives is a better response due to less restrictive airflow. With the intake, it's easier and faster to suck the desired amount of air. It becomes even more tricky not to lose power with the intake because very often people just put open cones under the hood and they suck very hot air.

  • @HassanEido1

    Intake sounds good... does it lower air temp? My tuner says the cold air intakes don't help m235i due to bad airflow from the grills. True or not?

    • @ArtemDzhadzha
      @ArtemDzhadzha Před 4 lety

      You can put scoops that will help a little to push fresh air into the intake. But to be sure you suck the air from the outside and not from under the hood, you should keep your intake boxed to eliminate any air suction from under the hood. And even after all of that, you won't get colder air. "Cold air intake" is more of a marketing name that means the air is sucked from outside. Properly designed factory intake will suck the same air of the same temp. The only downside is that factory intake is more restrictive. It puts more vacuum before the turbos, that's all. But the benefit is much less sand and much less damage to compressor wheels

    OK so stock an M340i has 382 hp by BMW's conservative rating. You modded with a high flow downpipe and an exhaust and lost performance? Then added an intake which did little more than make the car sound better (assuming you like more turbo spool noise). I appreciate your honesty, but what does that really say about these performance mods that should be bumping up the hp up a little?

    • @KiesMotorsports
      @KiesMotorsports  Před 4 lety +3

      BMW's number is to the crank, what we measured was to the wheels. Normally, you have about a 15-20% drivetrain loss when you rate it from the crank to the wheels. Although some mods don't add a ton more power, sometimes they add different sound, etc, which some people really like, even if it doesn't come with large gains
