- Learn how to fix a GE top load washing machine that is making a grinding noise. The model in the video is a GTW220ACK4WW but this video applies to a lot of top lop load GE washers models including GTW460ASJ7WW, GTW460ASJ5WW, and more. In this video I show how to replace the clutch and mode shifter. This video is part of of my series "Free on Facebook" in which I repair, reuse, repurpose things I find for free!

OMG I have been piling through countless videos and none have sounded like this so I was like omg I am never gonna find my noise lol!
Glad you found the sound. I almost omitted it and went straight into the repair!
@@DuctTapeMechanic Gasp! Don't do that lol!
Same!! But mine is a grinding/screeching noise for AMANA washer. 🧐
@@Felipe-ou4jz Replace the clutch. I have a video on how to do it for whirlpool/kenmore/maytag/Amana (all the same company).
@@DuctTapeMechanic oh man! I will follow the video. Thank you so much! 😎
My machine was bought new only 2 yrs ago. This is a ridiculously cheap made part. The video is top-notch. Very happy I found your video.
Same with me, 1.5 year old washer with 12 month warranty (joke)
Hopefully the replacement parts do the trick to get my moneys worth.
Excellent job, The fact that you included the fault along with what it sounded like in the repair puts the usefulness of this video well above others. Please continue this practice if possible in the future. It helped me. Thank You...
Glad it's helped! Thanks for the support!
Thanks man. Saved me the cost of replacing my machine. Videos like this are exactly what makes CZcams gold for DIYers. Cheers.
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
My wife was literally talking about taking this thing to the landfill ! We paid an appliance repair shop $150 to only tell us they didn’t know . Your video and $50 in parts had it back to normal quiet operation ! Many thanks !
That's so awesome. Glad I was able to help!
I have listened to that grinding noise for a month and a half and just figured it would stop. But when it didn't I looked it up on CZcams. Thank you Duck tape tool man. You saved me $700. The video explained everything perfectly. I changed the modulator the clutch and the spring in 25 minutes.
Awesome! Glad to help!
I am a 48 year old woman who has never looked at a washer beyond washing my clothes. I was able to fix my daughters washer with this video. I checked the error code and sure enough it was 18. Drainage. I didn't have the motor tester so I took a chance and ordered a new drain motor. $40 online. Changed out the motor and hooked everything back up and it's perfect!!!! Thank you!!!
That's awesome! Great job on the fix!
That is awesome to hear. On father's day I was repairing ours and I was teaching my 12year old how easy it was to save some money.
Omg, mine is only a year old and started doing this. Had it "looked" at and they said they didn't know what was wrong with it. Thank you for the video. I will fix my own dang washer.
Right on! Best of luck!
Thank you so much for this video. For those of us on a fixed income your video was the most helpful as assessing the problem and fixing it. You even put in detail (like using grease) that the professionals leave out. Again, thank you so much. ❤
You welcome! Glad the video was helpful!
Thank you so much I was about to return my machine, but I guess that is the real sound even after you fix it. Obviously not the grounding noise, but the regular washing noise. I also like the fact that I was able to hear other machines in your other videos
This video is terrific. Shows step by step up-close video of how to fix grinding noise. Easy to follow. Great that you included the sound, knew exactly which parts to purchase. Please make more videos!
Appreciate the support! I will do my best to continue to make high-quality videos!
Thank you for the video! From the sound to the step by step process this was great. I fixed my washer in about 45 minutes and it is ultra quiet now!!
Fantastic! You just saved yourself $200-$250 which is what a typical appliance repair tech would have charged (could have been even more expensive if they misdiagnosed it)
This guy knows his stuff. Straight to the point no bs!!
Appreciate the kind words!
Thanks for this video! I’m saving it now so my husband can fix our GE washer that’s doing this exact same noise
Thanks for watching! Best of luck to your husband!
Mine just did this tonight scared the hell out of us thank goodness with your video i can fix it thanks only had this thing 2 years
Thank you! I was so scared when I heard the grinding, thinking we’d be replacing the entire machine. Whew, anxiety eased. Thanks again!
Glad to help! Best of luck with the repair!
We have this EXACT machine making this EXACT noise! You’re a life saver!
Appreciate the kind words. Best of luck with the repair!
Myself also, past few months.
I haven't torn into my washer just yet, but my washer looks exactly like this one, and is making exactly that noise, so now I guess I have a very solid lead on what the problem PROBABLY is, and I'm gonna investigate soon. Thank you!
Best of luck!
Thank you for the wise advice. I changed the clutch about a year ago. I didn't know that a weak shifter actuator could cause the new clutch to fail again. It failed. I blamed the failure on Chinese parts, till i saw this video. Thank you for the tip, and taking the time to help others with this video!
Yes I recommend changing the actuator and clutch at the same time. Glad you found the video helpful! Best of luck in your repair
I changed both and not even a week later it started with the same noise
Thanks so much. I just bought my washer I am going to see if it is still under warranty. However probably will end up paying for it all myself. Thanks so very much!
Thanks and a NOTE: also make sure the splines the clutch ride on are clean and rust free. This video saved me hundreds but it does not note that your splines might be rusty which prevent the clutch from sliding easily. I cleaned mine with a Dremel wire brush wheel. Washer works like a dream now! Thanks DuctTape!
Got advice! Thanks for the support as well!
This just happened to ours after buying it one year ago brand new, watched your video, ordered the parts and bam! Runs like a charm! Thanks for the video!
Great work on the repair l. Glad you found the video helpful
Where do you buy the parts? Which stores or website?
@@hilarysvariety5839 Amazon has what you need
Got the new parts replaced and it fixed it! Thanks for the video! Only thing was that one mine, the pulley nuts were 9/16 instead of 3/8.
Thank you for posting this video. It has givien me the confidence to fix my washer that is doing this very thing.
That's awesome! Beat of luck in your repair. Thanks for watching
I just wanna say I’ve been scouting this video for 2 weeks while we waited for our parts and I just wanna say thank you for this quick ez fix! We were able to save money and feel good about doing a DIY by ourselves (my wife and I) thanks for the great video it helped out the perfect amount! 🙏🏼
Thank you! This is my exact machine and the exact grinding noise I was experiencing. I replaced the spring, clutch, and shifter and it’s as good as new! Saved hundreds. Thank you again!
Excellent job on the repair! Glad I could help!
@@DuctTapeMechanic Any tips on looking for missing socks in this model of washer without having to remove the electrical panel?
I would be hesitant to disassemble this machine to look for socks. They can be quirky sometimes, so if you have a good working machine, I would leave it alone.
can anyone share a link on where to buy these parts ... I know I can google, but I trust a link from parts yall have tried and worked excellent for you ... thanks in advance 🙏
Did exactly what you did and it’s still making that sound. Not as loud and not as often but still making that grinding sound
Sometimes it can be the transmission pulley that needs to be replaced as well
Thank you so much. I was able to identify that this was in fact the cause of my grinding noise. I ordered all of the parts on GE. Took a while to get the parts, but super affordable. Just replaced everything and fixed it MYSELF in about 15 minutes. You saved me so much money and taught me not to be afraid of my washing machine lol THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome! I am glad you were able to fix it! Great work!
I watched your video very informative, I have replaced drain pumps on other washing machines, but I was a little intimidated with this newer model, but it seems pretty much the same which I was very thankful to see,
Glad I could help
Thank you! I had a similar issue where the wiring harness for the speed sensor loosened up and got tangled in the drive belt. Made a very similar grinding noise. So I went ahead and order a new sensor, pully, spring, gear and shifter for just about $100 total. Viola! Like new washing machine. Love that you made the instructions so easy to follow.
Great work! Glad you found the video helpful!
@@DuctTapeMechanic I was also able to avoid spending over $120 on the new speed sensor for my model by buying an $8 speed sensor for similar models and splicing it onto the wiring harness for my model.
@@douglasmclean2802 you are the man! great job
you are my hero. I have been banging my head and have already bought a couple tools to figure out what was happening. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
Life saver! Took me a while to find a video with the same sound as mine.
Oh my GOD. I just bought a gently used set of this make and model, I was horrified at the grinding sound during agitation - fast forward to finding this video AND THAT'S IT'S NORMAL SOUND?! I have never heard a machine sound like that. But, thank you for posting the before and after repair in this video, because at least I know it's supposed to sound like that. Thank you.
You helped me fix my washing machine and it only costed me $40! Thanks so much!
Glad I was able to help! Great job on the fix!
I recorded the sound and it’s just like this. I’ll still have to call a repairman since I can’t repair. But the great thing is being able to share the issue and this video!! Thanks!!!
Very informative & helpful video without being long & drawn out! My machine was making more of a squeaking noise than a grinding one, but I pulled that plastic safety shield off to check things out anyway. Instead of chunks of white plastic/nylon, I found more of a black dust. I immediately said "I know what that is...belt dust!!!" Sure as can be, I looked at the belt first thing and found that on the splined pulley (connected to the motor), the belt had somehow jumped up one spline so that the edge of the belt was rubbing against the large flat edge of the pulley. I pulled down on the belt while turning the pulley, got it back where it belonged, and all my troubles went away!! I'm still going to replace the belt as the one edge is pretty chewed up. But, until it gets here, the current one is still running the machine! $10 "preventative maintenance" vs. the $130 I thought I was going to have to shell out for a new transmission/bearing platform!
Very nice! Great job troubleshooting!
Thanks for posting this video. While watching this I discovered a different problem I was having with my washer. It was loose nuts on the pulleys. Making a grinding sound as well. Got soaked for $89 for service call where the technician told me to buy another washer. Said it was the bearings or the motor. Wasn't worth fixing. After watching your video, fixed it myself......cost 30 cent washer. Working beautifully.
Awesome! Glad I could help a bit!
Love the video. Thought that was my problem because it’s sounds like the drum is moving while washing but discovered it was not moving. Disassembled and I had sticky black shavings of some sort. Clutch and shifter looks good. Just has a black residue on them. Not for sure.
I think you've help me figure out what's wrong with our machine. Thank you in advance! 😎
I just got my new washer today, started my first load and it makes the "Normal" noise that yours makes after repair. I didnt think that was normal after having a front loader for 20 yrs. After reading comments, I'm so glad I got the 5 year warranty on my New GE Washer Model # GTW465ASNWW. although you make it look so easy to repair... due to knee pain I would not be able to do this. and honestly, I just don't want to hear my husband cussing if he were to try. LOL
A 5 year warranty for a GE is definitely a good idea!
Hey. These washers are noisy when everything’s working perfectly. That said, make sure you raise the washer off the floor and level it by turning the bottom feet. Your clothes will get twisted and tangles if the feet are all the way to the floor.
Thanks for uploading, this is the exact washer we just bought new and it's making this noise. Thumbed up this video.
Glad I could help!
You did a wonderful video on what was going on with my washer and how to make the repair. Thank you
Thank you!
Thanks for the video..I had this exact same problem..I ordered the parts from GE and a clutch, spring, and shifter came to $53 with shipping….great video!!thanks again
Glad it helped
Thanks for this video. I added it to my one star review for this washer. There is no way those important parts should be made of cheap plastic. It is designed to fail. Whatever happened to consumer protections? As a side note, I tried to show this video to a GE repairman since my machine is under warranty. He looked away and said he doesn't learn repair from watching CZcams videos. Then proceeded to tell me it was the belt which he replaced and after he left the noise started up again. If GE wants to waste their money I will keep calling them back. I have the extended service plan. If they keep sending technicians like that they will have spent 10 times the cost of this machine in service calls.
GE has really gone down hill. I have seen nearly new GE/Hotpoint washers making this grinding noise (most of the time it's the clutch sometimes it's the transmission pully).
Very informative video, straight forward repair. Thank you for you efforts!
Glad to help!
Thank you, I had the people that sold me mine try to tell me it was normal .. I immediately searched and found this to respond with 🤣🤣🤣 and now their technician will follow your instructions 🙏
Glad to help. Yes definitely not normal! Lol
I typed washing machine grinding. This is the first video that came up and exactly the one I needed thanks!!!
That's awesome! Best of luck with the repair
@@DuctTapeMechanic thank you !!
Thanks so much for this video. I am leaning toward chucking my 15 month old noisy washer after reading the comments below. I don't want to be doing this once a year. I don't want to be doing this at all.
EDIT:
This washer is very different than mine inside. Mine has a "clutchless" motor. I cannot get any part behind the pulley, except the whole motor... It's only $100 more to buy a new washer. I'm still going to take it apart and grease/clean the back of the pulley. If that works... Great! If not I will be getting a new washer.
THANK YOU!!!! You saved me waiting like a month to get my GE repaired!!! I'm going to order the part today, but mine only made the grinding noise for about 15 seconds before I turned it off. It does not grind in the spin cycle. Tonight I will take it apart and grease it, and see if I can finish my one load without grinding.
It was not grinding last time I used it, then we had to move it as I had a broken pipe that supplied water to the washer. This is the first time I tried to use it since it was moved.
BTW... Liked and Subbed!!!
Thanks for the information you did such a great job! It helped me fix my washer!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Home Depot ..not used..brand new hotpoint..light loads..one could say I’m pretty pissed. Thanks for the education sir..your much appreciated!
Yeah tech just came yesterday second trip..looking like the belt he says. Do you think GE would honor a replacement due to the speed in issues?
Thank you so much we have the same one and doing this …it’s only coming up on barely four years old. Followed and liked the video!!
Your welcome! Best of luck with your repair!
Going to call and see if under warranty and if not, now i know what to do. Thanks so much!
Perfect! Best of luck!
Dude! I just bought my washer like 6 months ago. My girl was certain there was something under the agitator... I was starting to think so too until I found this video.. Sucks such a new machine needs such an expensive repair, but I'm gonna have to do this. Thanks a lot for your video
Your washer should have a 1 yr warranty with it. Mine started doing this when it hit a year old on new years day. I have the extended warranty, so they covered it. Now flash foward 4 months later, it's doing it again.
@@JMarrieexactly the same thing with mine. 6 months after new it started doing it. Parts were replaced, 4 months later it's doing it again. Junk.
I just had the repairman here. This machine is less than a year old & started making this noise this week. The guy said it’s a normal noise & nothing to be done about it. I’m furious. Another repairman is coming tomorrow.

Thanks for the video….i just installed my new one that I have been sitting on for 2 years thanks to home warranty company that replaced my old one because of this noise I think…so before I toss out my old one I will check this part tomorrow.
You're welcome!
Just got through fixing my washer. Took me a little while, I had to just tilt back the washer at 45 degrees, I didn't have the room to lay it flat. The only issue I had was getting the pulley wheel off, at that angle it was hard to get an angle. I had already took out the mode shifter bolts and it happened to fall out while I was banging on the pulley and that gave me more room, so got it off pretty quick then. No other issues and so far the washer is working fine. Less than $75 to fix, including overnight shipping on the parts. Thanks for the video, made it fairly easy.
Great tips! Glad it worked out!
Hey, have you got any portable dishwasher repair videos. I have a whirlpool dishwasher that the pump seems to have weakened. It will still pump out water but only a small stream. I’m hoping it’s just clogged up. Right now, I’m just bailing it out between cycles

This was VERY helpful, but not for the reason you might think. We just got a stacked (all-in-one) unit and the washer sounded like something was very wrong. But it sounds like yours, just without that intermittent grinding. So I guess it's ok.

Your welcome. Did it fix the issue?
@@DuctTapeMechanic I have to wash clothes again
After watching this, I flipped my washer over expecting to have the same problem. Turns out it was just a Cholula hot sauce lid that my cats knocked under there. It had gotten wedged between the floor and the cover and was grinding against the pulley. Just removed it and now it's running great 👍
Great work!
Excellent video man. Thank you

@@DuctTapeMechanic if replacing the spring and clutch doesn't solve the grinding noise, could a bad shifter motor cause it to make a grinding noise?

@@DuctTapeMechanic I've got a similar washer to the one in the video making the similar grinding sound. What I noticed on mine is the shaft what the pulley is bolted to is moving up and down about 1/2". Is this normal and if not how can I fix it? Where do I find parts for it, I'm in Toronto Canada.
I hope that’s my problem. It’s definitely making the same sounds. Very noticeable at the beginning of the cycle and somewhere mid cycle.
I’ll order the parts and see if it resolves it. Thanks so much for the video.
Best of luck!
Awesome job 👏 👍🏻 🙌
Bro clutch for this.Thank you💪🏾
No problem 👍
One note, my washer was fairly new (2 years old) and there was a grinding sound during the SPIN cycle. So I ordered a clutch kit from amazon to do the repair ($18). But after taking it part I didn't have the debris from grinding plastic. It turned out to be the shift motor assembly needed to be replaced ($24). so this might be helpful for some people with a similar problem.
Wonderful tip! I also recommend replacing the clutch and actuator at the same time!
Did it spin during the spin cycle or just make a noise.
if the shift motor is the problem then during the "spin" cycle (spin drying cycle) it will NOT spin and make that grinding noise once as it "tries" to engage.

My pleasure!!
Hi! Thanks for the great video. I just did the replacement you show in your video and it helped a ton. But once I got the washer back up on it's feet, I can get it to start to fill, but it won't actually continue or move onto the next cycle. I figure I must've done something, but no idea what might have caused this. Got any suggestions?
EDIT: Solved it. It helps if you PLUG IN the mode shifter!!! FML 😂
Thank you for the video, unfortunately i replaced my clutch & shifter and the noise came back. I had to hold the plastic fork over a flame and bend it up slightly so it keeps the clutch out of the way during wash cycle, which seems to work for now 👍
Thank you.
Thank u!!!! My agitator wasn’t working and I flipped my washer over and the belt was off
great video, thanks
Your welcome!
The plastic parts must be replaced by metal parts the machines are built cheap.
House wife here the mystery is solved 🤣👏👏 great vid!!!!❤
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Good video
Awesome video! I think my issue is in the other pulley. It can spin freely without turning the motor with it because it has 0 teeth left!
I recently changed all those parts that you indicated...it still makes a grinding sound
It's usually the bad clutch that causes this noise, I suppose a bad transmission pulley might be the next thing to look at
@@DuctTapeMechanic and where is that located on the machine....I replaced that one pulley
Changing mine this afternoon, except for the spring, which hasn't arrived yet. If there's an issue as is, I'll just repeat the disassembly and switch out the spring ($9 for the spring???). I saw much cheaper timer assemblies, but settled on one that I KNEW would be new and the color was bright white vs some of the others that were obviously old/yellow-beige. My clutch sprocket was about $9, spring @ $9, and I think the timer was @ $39, so I'm pleased with this one.
Best of luck!
