Cameron is an incredibly articulate filmmaker.
Definitely a top ten director of the last 40 years. Possibly even top five. He isn't afraid to take on a production with a huge scope, and his action scenes deliver.

Hes phenomenal. And this film, despite IMO the questionable scene of First officer Murdoch, murdering Jack's friend, "Titanic" was an absolute masterpiece.
He later visited the family of Murdoch and apologised as well as issuing a public apology. Should’ve changed name of guy, a little cheeky.
Titanic is timeless. Phenomenal film.
Disgusting. The ship is an inanimate object that can only resemble a human arm and best it is called it. The ocean in the human beings aboard are called she. The wound is like a Potter wheel and clay but the Potter is she. She is a spirit animator create spirit and matter creator and creature. Hammond failed to understand this

good interview but the 2nd most important person of the movie besides Cameron is not mentioned. James Horner. Imagine Titanic without this epic music. James Horner was crucial for that movie like nothing else. His music is a masterpiece of its own. Much more important than any actor. It creates the emotions and fits perfectly to the movie. James Horner stays in the shadow but he is an immense part of the movie and he is not acknowledged enough...
He did win an oscar for it so..... theres that.
music is one of the most important parts of any movie but it takes a good director to recognize that talent and use it to its best.

I agree, it's like mentioning Jaws or Star Wars with out mentioning John Williams.
Imagine “Titanic” without the fictitious and nauseating characters of Jack, Rose, and Cal. The main reason for those characters and the actors who portrayed them, was to capture the lucrative teen to early twenties market. That demographic could have cared less about Titanic’s story, hence Cameron’s ridiculous inclusion of “star crossed” lovers. It appears many of those teens viewed the film more than once. The redeeming quality of the film was the stunning recreations of some of the interior, although green screens and CGI were also utilized. And not to forget the magnificent costumes! The Oscar for best screenplay slipped through his fingers; a result of the Jack and Rose imaginary silliness, and the superb screenplay of “Good Will Hunting” which captured the screenplay Oscar. There is no doubt Jim has added to our knowledge of the Titanic with his explorations of the ship before filming, and others in the years after the film’s premiere. I applaud him for those efforts. But Jack and Rose should have been pushed overboard in the first hour of the film. 😂
Titanic will go down on history as one of the greatest cinematic achievments ever put on film.
Most promoted crap forget about it. The ship is an inanimate object does not resemble any human body part it is called an it. A simple storyline about A-bomb trying to get into 1st class is not a love story. She is the spirit and 1st flesh the creator and the Creature. The ocean can be called she. And then his film attracted all the sexiest people I could find were a stupid door debate. He was a bum who gave up and was arrogantly sure that he would not die to. Still mothers are retainingly murdered and ruby's unnecessary. Gay men beat up women set them on fire. Animation no afore or debate. This movie and the propaganda around it needs to be forgotten

Him, and Chrisopther Nolan, who could be called the 2nd generation of James Cameron. Nolan talking about his films is also incredibly fascinating, the technical details he can drum up are staggering.

Interviews with filmmakers are a million times more interesting than interviews with actors. Actors are fine but this is the real insight. They are unmatched in talent.
This is why Titanic is one of the best films ever made. Just listen to Cameron. His films are not accidentally great.

Titanic is one of the only movies that has these seemingly contrasting elements like romance and disaster but neither one gets the short end of the stick. You’re swept off your feet in the first half and then completely crushed in the second half
I love that James included the engine room and people working in the boiler room and many other details of this beautiful ship. If that was only about Jack and Rose, he might as well have had the captain say "we go full ahead, 21 knots" but we actually get to see the whole magic happen. Titanic is the main character of this movie, there is no doubt.
"Titanic" truly was James Camerons vision and film. He not only did the normal duties of a director to an amazing level, which is difficult in itself, but unlike most directors, even the GREAT ones, this guy WROTE THAT SCRIPT, which is incredible. I also cant stress enough that this isnt "The Terminator", or any film where if you mess things up, it doesnt really matter. This was Titanic, one of the biggest stories of the 20th century, and one, atleast in my opinion, that meant so much to people that you really couldnt afford to F it up. He didnt. Infact he BROUGHT you there that night.

Did you catch the comment that this interview was conducted on the cusp of the movie releasing? Charlie Rose, nor James Cameron, knew at that time what sort of success it would blossom into. Fascinating to get their views at this moment.
It's much like watching a real interview with Harrison Ford.. and I'm not talking about when he's on a promotional tour.. when it comes to story telling, you can see the passion... side note: I dont think Harrison could work with Cameron lol... mainly cuz Harrison isn't a real directable type person and Cameron is a very "in-control" director
My grandmothers (she only lived to be 51) favourite film. She died when I was 7 , but this was her favourite film. Whenever I see this movie I think of her.

Not only did he do that, he also made three different versions of Avatar; and I hear he has four sequels in the works.
Cameron is incredible in every way. Not just a great director with sensational visions but also very articulate.
I found it so sweet that James Cameron said “isn’t she beautiful?” referring to Kate Winslet. She was Rose and perfectly cast. James is a genius at what he does. What a masterpiece Titanic was! My favorite movie. I wish I could see it again for the first time just to experience that magic and awe again. It truly transports you to another time & place 💙
I bet it definately transformed you even more if you saw it in a theatre. I never did, but youre right, it takes you on that ship, and makes you a part of one of the biggest tragedies of the 20th century.

Part of the genius of Titanic is that you never get the sense that the film has lost sight of the tragedy.
You could take the main characters out and easily use footage of the seeking and the inside of the ship and create a documentary out of it.

I watched Titanic at the cinema in 1997 and it was incredible. The special affects are way ahead of it's time and would fir right in with CGI movies of today.
What a genius. Notice how much he refers to history. I bet that’s one thing that really separates and gives him an advantage over other filmmakers...
Pure genius, this is the best movie of all time regarding the technical reconstruction issue and the grade of detail it was given...

It's become trendy to bash Titanic but I agree with you. It was a pop culture PHENOMENON, the likes of which we see only once every couple of generations. Titanic's box office INCREASED week upon week as it went along. That just DOES NOT happen.

I like how James Cameron didn’t go to film school or anything like that he just figured it out and he made some of the most memorable films of his time. I mean terminator and titanic everyone knows them films and a director can only hope to make one film that is that successful and he has made multiple movies that are massively successful.

I had the most amazing experience being on this movie set. I went down to just be a 3rd class passenger among many, and I was cast as a "stoker" in the boiler room also. I am grateful for this experience. The nights with everyone in period costume and the tilting ship was priceless.

@@victorsamsung2921 Hi. Yes, Cameron was within arms length especially when film crew descended into the Boiler Room. I have a Port Hole from the ship, rivets, filming schedule and White Star Officer, gold buttons. I also went 90* on the Poop Deck that night !

@@victorsamsung2921 We could walk the whole deck. The other locations were on sound stages away from ship. I'm dumping a wheelbarrow when camera first shows boiler room. I'm 3rd class with sack over shoulder when car is being flown overhead. Great nights Victor !

Did anyone else get the sense that Cameron couldn't stand it when Charlie Rose referred to the ship as "the boat?"
True. There is an interview with Kate Winslet where she said that Cameron ALWAYS corrected her and others when they incorrectly referred to Titanic as a boat. He would say "It's a ship, not a boat"...

Well it is the Big boat He used more problematic language when he failed to realize that she could only apply to the captain or the ocean. First time I am seeing this and it really is an incredible interview. Everything a Titanic fan could want.
Cameron is a genius and innovator beyond just making movies.
Little did he knew, at the time, what a time piece has he created...

That aged well.
And not only did he do Avatar and exceeded Titanic in its financial success aspect, but James Cameron plans to build an entire Avatar Saga with his four Avatar sequels having a cumulative budget of roughly 1 billion dollars. He has already principally photographed, filmed and mo-capped the first two Avatar sequels. Still a long way to go with post-production and all that jazz.
@@Tsobanian Yeah, he's not exactly dreaming small :) Though Titanic earned a lot more than Avatar when adjusted for inflation, which is the only way to really compare financial success, despite not being an exact science.

People often dismiss Titanic as a simpleton crowd pleaser, but being more informed I think people may realize it's actually an amazing picture that actually fly against Hollywood in every way, at every step of the way.
I feel like it's become so cliche to people but I've seen the film many times and I think it's an amazing moving story ever and then it was an epic and tragedy like Gone with the Wind or something
People find reasons to slag the film off because it's not cool to like something that everybody else likes. There's the notion that if everyone likes it, it can't be REALLY that good because the majority of the masses aren't intelligent enough to appreciate truly good films. For that reason, negative criticism generated with that mindset says nothing useful, and nothing objective, about the quality of the film.
This was fascinating to listen to, I love hearing the details behind making a film from a director such as James Cameron. This man who began as a truck driver that now makes the biggest movies, just wonderful all around. I've seen Avatar so many times that I can't watch it anymore, but I'm still very hyped for the sequels, it's gonna be something special.

Yeah, he was a real person. I remember reading that he had drank so much liquor that it enabled him to survive being partially submerged in the ice cold water for as long as he did. The liquor kept him warm.

The alcohol was not what kept him alive. In fact, if he had been plastered, it’s likely he wouldn’t have survived since alcohol increases bloodflow in the extremities and speeds up body heat loss.

Every interview with JC is such a pleasure to see. Always knowledgeable, straight answers, no bullshit.
Enlightening interview. I have respect for Mr Cameron's films in general. Out of everything he's done, Titanic is my favorite. He was committed to fully fleshed out characters which cannot be easy to do. He wrote beautifully and elegantly for his female characters, especially. He's a brilliant artist and I respect his stance on the tragic Titan submersible disaster. He made over twelve submersible dives himself and he knew what he was talking about.
He’s been to titanic over 30 times alone. He’s been to the Mariana Trench on a sub he helped design. He wrote Avatar in the early/mid 90s and just kept asking the co-founder of a cgi company he helped found if they could make it. He kept asking every few years until he was told they had the tech to do it, so he made it. The man is brilliant.

Charlie Rose: "How much to break even?" Cameron - "$300-$350 million..." It made a billion 1997 dollars, $600 million domestic. Interesting to hear this interview before the films debut and becoming a cinematic sensation.

I so feel for Thomas Andrews. Imagine the feeling of sorrow and loss, having to let go of his labour of love, and dying with it. What a tragedy.
Excellent; enjoyed every minute of it. And I loved "Titanic" DEVOURING it 3x 'on the big screen' (i.e., choose to pass on Blu-ray or DVD).
We heard, without difficulty everything Cameron said; however, Rose repeatedly drops his voice and what he says is indecipherable.

I remember when he was making this movie; the media was acting like it was another Water World.
"T1 & T2", "Aliens", "True Lies", "Titanic", "Avatar/Avatar Series" - for these movies cinema was invented for. A big audience worldwide wants to watch films like these.
James Cameron is interested in many things. And when he is interested, he wants to know everything. He wants to learn constantly. This is great kind of intelligence.
So he knows more and more and learns a lot. This is the whole trick. Cameron is able to do a lot of things. He is gifted, talented. He has the will to work very hard. He is a genius. But of course he always needs a great team and people that know their business.
The story of "Titanic" has been told many times. It's a big tragedy, a true story. Everybody knows, how the "Titanic" story ends. 1'500 people died.
The love story that James Cameron wrote is fiction. But this story is very great and touches the hearts of people around the world. Cameron just has the feeling how to write and create stories that the audience likes to see.
Going down to the wreck of Titanic is another big story.

If James Cameron really wanted to be able say those things, he has the experience, the personality and the background to get them said regardless of what some interviewer might try to do. He agreed to the interview, and he knows what they are like. And whatever the case, people always love to vilify the interviewer in interviews with dearly loved megastars like this - it's part of the fun it it for them. But because of that, they will look for any excuse to do so and thus the resulting criticism of the interviewer really doesn't mean much of any great import.

I agree with you that if James Cameron had wanted to answer he would have, but my problem is that I wanted to hear the answer, and many other answers that were cut off.

At 18:29 & 40:12 James tells Charlie "I'll send you the Laserdisc with all the extras". At the time of this interview James was no doubt planning to do just that. As it turns out the 2-disc Laserdisc set ended up containing only the movie with no extras. On the plus side the Laserdisc was packaged in a nice gatefold sleeve featuring pictures from the movie.
Charlie was ahead of the game. Doesn't this look like a podcast? I've always loved this set. Now it's starting to make sense.
Great interview: great brain and a very educated and experienced person, with amazing objectivity and sense of the world, people and communiction.
I've always thought Charlie Rose was a horrible interviewer. I'm sort of glad he self-imploded years ago. Cameron, on the other hand, is a legend.
The interviewer often stopped Cameron from talking. I didn't like it.

I remember meeting Jim before Titanic, I was doing a movie with his wife and he had sandy blonde hair well by the end of Titanic, where I played Chief Office Henry Wilde … He was completely grey, he’s a hard worker he never stops not for anything or anybody or the studio he will not bend break or otherwise total respect for this man👍

1) it stops with the captain, not ismay
2) the lifeboat wasn't full, there were no women and children around and he was told to get in (after he'd been helping others into the boats).
Cameron already knew this when he did the interview
Yeah, I hate how badly Ismay tends to get treated in Titanic films (not to mention how he was persecuted when he was still alive). Even if he did encourage speed, which there’s very little evidence of, he wasn’t calling the shots, and the captain & crew didn’t take undue risks relative to the practices of the time. And after the collision, Ismay worked hard alongside the crew to get passengers into lifeboats, and only got himself into a lifeboat (one of the last launched) when there was no-one else around and still many open seats.

Me: Well the last 30 minutes of this film emotionally destroys me so mission accomplished

In titanic Cameron captured all of humanities strengths, beauty, weaknesses and ugliness.
Love story aside, the hubris and denial of the inevitable in the film is an apt metaphor for what we are collectively doing and will do vis. the destruction of the planet, and how challenging it will be to deal with the humans reacting to that kind of stress (in addition to adapting to rapid and difficult changes).

One of the best directors outthere, he has excellent focus and amazing skill and talent, he knows how to film or make a film become a massive hit. He is an amazing editor as well. He is very passionate about the films he directs. You look at T6 Dark Fate, Candyman, and many others they were not great, This is where Hollywood fails, you need a serious director for a film not those that can't draw any money in...
I love how James Cameron has dissected all the human emotions attached to such a horrific event.
