It strangely holds up, in part because it doesn't hold up. Like, the dated aspects of it and the soapy dialogue and plot lines are just charming, while the gothic tone and creepy stories still resonate and work. Like you, I love it and feel like it's underrated even with its cult following.
Yes..I still have my lifetime membership card..lol..Night of Dark Shadows is a little different..not as much action or dialog as the first..with Quentin and Beth..but, loving Dark Shadows, you should definitely watch
So, you asked whether new people got into it, I had only heard of the show at the time I saw this. The movie is what got me to check out the show. The sequel is the less accessible of the two, at least in my opinion, but they are both worth checking out. As a fellow DS lover, it's hard not to be charmed by the films. Really need to watch more of the series. What kind of trivia is that???? Also, we need to talk about the new adaptation of Nosfertu that Robert Eggers is doing. Tubi, btw has some harder to find Dan Curtis pilots and specials that are fun and you would appreciate. That ending was pitch perfect 🤣🤣🤣 Great video, Professor!!!
Picking this one for me was a softball cuz you know I was gonna like it, but it was nice putting on a IISW recommendation knowing that it was something that I was going to be into. I'll be checking out the sequel for sure.
Dan Curtis also did non horror like the miniseries “The Wings of War.” You ought to also check out “Night of the Dark Shadows”. Completely independent storyline.
Yeah, it sounds like I'm definitely gonna have to get to "Night of Dark Shadows" for sure. I am not familiar with "The Wings of War" so that might also be worth looking up since I like a lot of what I've seen of Curtis' work.
I have always been interested in this. I think Dark Shadows was on some cable shows in the 90s. But the only experience i have with this is the Johnny Depp Movie, which I hear is not a great representation of the show. But I gather this better represents the TV show that that horrible The Last Airbender movie represented that show.
I'd say give this one a try; if you enjoy it then there's a good chance you'll like the show as well. If you don't like it, then maybe the show won't be for you. I will definitely agree that the Depp/Burton movie is a terrible representation of the show. I'll be talking about this more in a future video, but the short version is that it took the comedy track that a lot of these movie adaptations of old shows take, like Starsky and Hutch and 21 Jump Street (although I actually liked that one). It's like they think just because the show is dated and, as a result, a bit campy, that that means they should make it an out and out comedy. I would have much preferred a straight take on the show.
LOL My parents would never have taken me to see this movie b/c i watched the soap in the 60's as a 6 year old child then i woke them screaming in terror about Barnabas Collins every night when the family was trying to sleep. Now this begs the question wtf was my mom doing when it came on tv every damn afternoon. We lived in a trailer back then so she couldnt have been that far away. Anyhow, didnt know there was a movie. LOL 😂
Haha I love this story. The idea that your folks would not let you see this movie but let you watch the show is kind of hilarious. Of course, the movie is a little more gruesome and intense than the show, but the illogical reasoning still stands. On the other hand, I can see not letting a 6 year old see this movie... but, like you said, letting them watch the show seems weird too. If you enjoyed the show then I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the movie too, so you should definitely check it out!
