You can choose what type of arrows your follower will use by selecting the arrow, then the bow. The little icon next to the bow should change.
I believe the difference between Archers and Fighters is an invisible damage multipler, Archers generally have a higher range modifier than their melee modifier.

You could have used you key in the spiders cave. You missed the chest that was around her platform. It would take your key but it has legendary stuff (varies).
