First you didn’t tell him /us what you will do with this air, for just $200 bucks and I would get it for sure, unless you are just doing regular office work and browser. My 2013 11” mba has 8gb ram, I would get 16gb for sure for any laptop in 2021. Think about it, what if you wanna virtual a windows 10/11 with the Air, you need ram!
A friend has run one of the largest architectural practices in Sydney exclusively on Macs for decades. I was surprised when he told me, but he says he has no issues and would never use PCs.
I use the mac air as my travel PC and i use an ipad as the second monitor, the combo is simply perfect, it's a powerful mac with an additional screen that is on 120HZ .. , i get 2 13inch screens working through airplay in 3kg , throw in a bluetooth mouse and it's literally the perfect mobile office experience. Also even with the 8gb of ram it just runs like a beast.
@@IamCree With the latest macos and ipad os they finally enabled Universal control. It's less laggy than screen mirroring and it makes the setup ideal. I tried the latest M1 pro etc with the largest screen etc, the difference in power is really not that big a deal and the even the 2017 ipad screen was 120hz (and constant not that variable crap) . Intro was great. I’m actually super interested in architecture very glad you gave the context so we know you’re not a CZcams “professional”, but rather a professional on CZcams 👍 Checking out your other content soon!
Your message, presentation and delivery are extremely professional I can tell you are extremely smart, just wow. As an industrial designer I've always been torn between MacOS and Windows since I need to use lots of software. Having to run Parallels to be able to run CREO/Solidworks really degrades the experience since you need to use computational power on the emulation of the other OS in the first place, and even then you will have problems with video card drivers/open-gl compatibility (that is the likely reason Revit keeps crashing). I was on the fence about buying one of these, but as you point out you need to know what you will be using this machine for and make compromises. For me as long as you can run Rhino and Zbrush without a hitch is good enough since this will not be a primary/workstation grade computer, more of a backup that I can just toss in my backpack and go see a client. For the heavy lifting you have most likely made the investment on a powerful/workstation grade PC anyways and If you haven't "you are holding it wrong" hehe. Great vid, thanks again.
Finally, I was waiting for a review like this one, other tech channels always say to get the M1 because it's the most powerful laptop right now and it is good for editing (which I think few people care about since they're not yters) but they never cover the limitations that it could bring to other PROFESSIONALS. Thank you so much, I was thinking about getting it but I don't think I'm going to wait for softwares to be compatible, let's see...
Hello! First video I've seen from you. I tend to be around more in the tech stuff of CZcams but I just wanted to let you know I really like your presentation method and delivery, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of your other content. I really like architecture and design despite being in a different major/industry. Cheers!
note that Parallels for M1 is actually running the ARM version of Windows, not the Intel/AMD version. Windows 10 ARM is the version that comes with the Microsoft Surface Pro X and certain other "all day battery" ultrabooks. Windows 10 ARM includes Microsoft's equivalent of Rosetta 2, but significantly more buggy than Apple's version. If a program is using a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit code, Windows' translation layer won't be able to handle it correctly. Some users have commented that the "pure 32-bit" version of Revit from a couple years back does work, where the newer 64-bit builds do not. But expect it to run significantly slower.
appreciate a perspective from someone in the design world. As a graphic designer/ photographer & video editor, ive been considering the air but all the other reviews seem like your typical tech reviews.
thanks for this, i really needed this insight. i have an i9 MacBook pro and i had trouble recommending the m1 MacBook pro because of compatibility but i am pretty sure the trend forward would be the apple silicon so, glad to know these programs are usable. Im more of a graphic designer as compared to a 3d designer but, rendering in 3d is part of my portfolio so this is good to know. also thank you for saying doo doo @11:03 , yes its immature but it made my day lol
Most architects I know use Apple devices (for looks) with Windows for software. I worked in an architectural office on a Mac and had a hard time using Autodesk programs. A lot of options that are available in the Windows versions were not in the IOS version. Felt like a lite version. Laptops have become stronger, but for complex rendering and modeling PC is still the best option. I have Sketchup file of 2GB. Greetings from a fellow architect from Belgium :)
Thanks for the no BS review. It's a bit one-sided towards architecture use, but I just figured out that it's the premise of your channel. Once again, thanks.

Dear DamiLee, honestly, I subscribed because of your interesting Architecture videos. I am pursuing my registration in USA after 20 plus years of designing architecture, firstly in Cuba and then in Mexico. Your videos have encouraged me to keep going. Thank you so much !!!
Well to be frank, I also bought an M1 MacBook Air last March, I would totally agree, when it comes to productivity and media consumption, battery life was phenomenal, but as of the architecture or CAD softwares that I'm using, tho I had a separate machine specifically for renderings and modeling, I still was impressed how it performed against the two of my machines here at home, one was a desktop and a laptop both equiped with an i7..
I think my biggest issue with a lot of tech reviews on laptops, MacBooks specifically, was the reviewers using the devices for such advanced things. But I have an M1 air and I use it for watching videos, schoolwork and my volunteer work. I have a 9th gen iPad and it’s so easy using them both - my only mistake was not watching reviews from students and only big tech guys to guide my purchase. The laptop is incredible
@@kindofafunnystory9487 oh definitely. I used the 11 inch MacBook Air (from 2013) for over 7 years, so my M1 was a massive upgrade. I have no problems with it
Hey Dami, love the channel. I'll admit, I found you through this video because I'm testing out my M1 MacBook Air and wanted some experienced opinions. Just wanted to say keep up the great work!
You had 22.7k subscribers when you made this video. I can see clearly why you got so many subs over a year. I'm not an architect nor do I own any Apple device, yet I watch some of your videos in awe. Your editing is impeccable, and everything is so smooth, including your voice and tone, your charisma, your smile, your beauty, and your intelligence. It's easy to admire you.
Nice video :) I think the problem with Revit is not the M1 Mac itself but the ARM version of Windows. Since M1 is based on ARM architecture, Parallels for M1 Macs uses the ARM version of Windows (not officially licensed, though). Even more, until very recently ARM Windows didn't support x86/64-bit software emulation (although it is still a beta feature), so perhaps that is the issue indeed.
The emulation layer of Windows on ARM is pretty good. Except for Autodesk and Adobe apps. Windows on ARM unfortunately still can’t run even the desktop version of AutoCAD LT, but for some reason can run SketchUp. The only thing I have a problem with is a crossing selection. It will freeze the view, but will still keep running the program behind it. And no amount of time letting it sit will fix that issue. I just save, and close SketchUp and re-enter. I have a Surface Pro X, and I love it. It’s getting better. Albeit, very slowly. Photoshop is in fact native now. I’m sure in the coming years with Project Volterra on the market, Windows apps will get compiled for ARM and it will work much smoother.
This video is a beautiful combination of tech, architecture, and great production. I work in tech and I am impressed by how you describe the current issues/limitation you have with your M1 in a very non-technical terms. Subscribed!

Another solution for the NTFS situation is to get a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. Make the device has a port for connecting external drives. This way you can access all your files over your network regardless of filesystem on the specific drive(s) you attach. For some this may be a cost prohibitive solution, but it's worth a mention.
@@guessworkQNAP is making some really impressive low cost NASs for home and small businesses. I personally think the RAID / backup options would be highly desirable for Architects and content creators dealing with such large files constantly. The NTFS is a nice bonus. The router option is a good as well. Though I haven’t seen too many with it. But I mostly deal with high end rack mounted routers, so that’s on me. :)
NTFS has never worked on Mac OS she sells it like its an M1 problem, there are various ways to share files, and unless your sharing 200 gb files then this would be a problem I guess, and even not then, use exfat.
14:42 In fact, AutoCAD had no native Mac version from 1994 to 2010. That's one of the reasons the industry standard became and remained PC not Mac. Which, in its turn, may be the reason why Autodesk doesn't feel the need to release a native Mac version for Revit.

Great point on challenges with multiple monitors. I struggled with it for a week before I figured out a workaround. Not many reviewers pointed out this issues. Love your Architecture videos. :)
I have a Mac Mini M1 with 2 monitors, is there a way to get the 3rd one running?
I thought the Mac monitors just daisy chain. As in the Mac monitors just connect with each other and you only need one connection coming out from your Mac to connect to all the displays.
These are _always_ helpful.
I’ve come around and realized I did more drawing on uneven surfaces like my bed. This doesn’t invalidate my new and essential desk, I’ve just used it for everything but drawing and will continue to despite what the voices in my head tell me. Messy spaces for creativity it is! Thank you young miss. Great Stuff, as always!
Video title should be "CAD Editing with Macbook Air M1 After 6 Months". I'm software engineer and use my M1 for professional use when i'm out my office, replacing my beloved and ancient 2011 MacPro. This machine is maybe the best computer I ever had. No major issues with compatibility (all solved), great battery performance and lightning fast, even can play games!. The power cord solution is a GREAT improvement from previous generations. Yeah, Apple is being Apple forcing you to purchase a new adapter for this mac and all my army of expensive adapters for previous generations doesn't work. Good news is the Lenovo Hybrid Dock Station work flawlessly with this unit.
OooOoo I will check out the Dock station I am looking for a bigger one 😊
Hey Oscar, do you recommend any upgrade? For example, 16 GM RAM?
@@andrewwhooo I don’t see it’s a question to be honest, don’t get me wrong.
@@andrewwhooo the 16gb is really worth it! Not only will it make the laptop faster but also future proof!
A friend has run one of the largest architectural practices in Sydney exclusively on Macs for decades. I was surprised when he told me, but he says he has no issues and would never use PCs.
Yeah I don't see huge problems with it. They probably use archicad / cad
Our studio also used macs, archicad and autocad, no problems. Airdrop also helped !
It's so nice to see an Architect's perspective and usage, Thanks DamiLee!
I really appreciate your videos. I’m looking at getting an M1 but I work in design/engineering and these softwares are so difficult.
Nice heads-up about the iPad as a second screen, cheers!
I hadn't considered that setup; thanks!
I develop websites/apps/edit photos, even videos sometimes and it's literally all i need.
I subbed and I just bought an M1 MBA after watching it. Thank you for ending my struggle. :D
Intro was great. I’m actually super interested in architecture very glad you gave the context so we know you’re not a CZcams “professional”, but rather a professional on CZcams 👍
Checking out your other content soon!
Welcome 😁
Great vid, thanks again.

good job
Would love to see how this performs on renderings!
If process is long it will throttle, if rendering is your daily thing I would suggest going on higher model.

@@gambet0007 Hi Roy! Do you think 8g is enough for normal music production and for adobe suite? I'm between the Air and the pro (both 8 g ram)
@@pmlgjrd6960 No, please get 16 gig version.
@@gambet0007 its insane how well it handles rendering but obviously there is some throttling on the air, but very minor throttling
No probs, glad you found it helpful 😀 software updates seem to be happening pretty frequently so keep tabs!
I am so glad that I found your channel! You seem to be such a talented and inspiring person. I'm about to watch your design and architectural videos
Thank you~~ Welcome to the channel 😆
Local Vancouverite here! Just discovered your channel. So fun to find more local artists/youtubers/creators!! Keep it up :)
Like your experience base explanation and subtle elegant theme. Awesome !
Thanks!!
appreciate a perspective from someone in the design world. As a graphic designer/ photographer & video editor, ive been considering the air but all the other reviews seem like your typical tech reviews.
I appreciate the appreciation!!
thanks for this, i really needed this insight.
i have an i9 MacBook pro and i had trouble recommending the m1 MacBook pro because of compatibility but i am pretty sure the trend forward would be the apple silicon so, glad to know these programs are usable. Im more of a graphic designer as compared to a 3d designer but, rendering in 3d is part of my portfolio so this is good to know.
also thank you for saying doo doo @11:03 , yes its immature but it made my day lol
LOLLLL 😂😂😂
we need a review on the new mac book pros with m1 chips! feel like this topic is not out yet between architects but there's a big demand/need for it!
Greetings from a fellow architect from Belgium :)
windows won't work on m1 cause of different chip architect
so you expect to install an x86 architecture os on an arm architecture chip? kay!
Hi! I will be in a dorm and I have no space for a PC, so a laptop is my only option. How do you feel about Macs for students?
My favorite CZcams person
Very informative, I’m thinking of buying my first Mac book air, and I might just 😁
It's refreshing hearing an individual speak so educational. I can just tell that your highly educated and we'll spoken. It's awesome to hear.
Thanks for the no BS review. It's a bit one-sided towards architecture use, but I just figured out that it's the premise of your channel. Once again, thanks.
No problem 😊
Thanks for the video. I was actually picturing computer architectures while later finding out you were referring to actual architecture.
At times you wink your left eye when you try to stress on something while trying to stay a little vague.. I found it very cute! I'm planning to buy MBA using the currently launched back to school offer. Initial part of your video was really helpful to me! Thanks!
No problem!! 😉
What's with that back to school offer? Is it a price drop or something?
@@zahitemremetin606 yes, i bought a macbook pro like 1k less than the regular price last year.
Dear DamiLee, honestly, I subscribed because of your interesting Architecture videos. I am pursuing my registration in USA after 20 plus years of designing architecture, firstly in Cuba and then in Mexico. Your videos have encouraged me to keep going. Thank you so much !!!
So easy to understand. Great video. I want to learn more about architecture now because of you. Excited new subscriber. 🤗
Another convert! Welcome to architecture 😁
The laptop is incredible
so you would still recommend the m1 2020 macbook right ? especially for students
@@kindofafunnystory9487 oh definitely. I used the 11 inch MacBook Air (from 2013) for over 7 years, so my M1 was a massive upgrade. I have no problems with it

Oh yes, the file system has always been a problem when working in a Windows environment. Nice video.
I subscribed you after watching the first 55 seconds of your video. It’s very impressive 😌🖤
Nice video :)
I think the problem with Revit is not the M1 Mac itself but the ARM version of Windows.

Don't be sad! I really enjoy your architecture / design review videos. As a new viewer, the ones I've watched so far are the videos on Megacities and on Burning Man. Both were fascinating!
I have watched a few loved them. Your voice actually makes me watch your videos. Its very different.
Hey, it worked. I came for the MacBook Air review and will stay for the architecture/design/presentation stuff. 😎 Would be interested in any Sketchup vids if that is your jam, especially going from being a newbie who sort of knows how to use it to being a power user (and apologies if you’ve already done that, need to look through other vids)
if it seems like people are more interested in your m1 review than you architecture, which im sure is great
its because your video is reaching out to a different audience than your usual. im here only because my office is going to give me one, and im not even an architecture person, but i will have to use it professionally so decided to click the vid
There is also an M1 MacBook Pro - would this be a better selection over the Air for these types of architectural tasks?
I like the intro. Came for the MaBook Air M1 review and subscribed for the architecture stuff.
Nice 😁
Oh, what a combo: charming + well sounding (I apologize. I’m only learning English) + architect.

Finally found what im looking for, a review from the same professional. Im thinking of this laptop but i doubt on the specs.
Now im gonna explore and learned from your channel that might and must help in my private practice. Thank you so much.
Love to hear if it can render using vray for sketch up.
Your title and your thumbnail grabbed my attention, and I stayed for the video. Great job! :D
You have the perfect personality for a tech youtuber. Should do it full time.
Awesome review💯Love that you slipped in your excellent work on your mac review😂😉 Def gained a sub!
14:42 In fact, AutoCAD had no native Mac version from 1994 to 2010. That's one of the reasons the industry standard became and remained PC not Mac. Which, in its turn, may be the reason why Autodesk doesn't feel the need to release a native Mac version for Revit.
It's turning away a lot of potential customers, especially as more people start migrating to MacOS..
I wish they’d make software for Mac, I have an M1 MacBook Air and I quite enjoy the clean experience over my Lenovo Pc. PC is stressful.
The day they bring Revit to mac I will cry
I've been digging up as many as i can abt air M1 reviews from the users as much as i can for weeks before i decide go with my plan on Air M1 or Pro for my works including with some light editing and stuff. Thx for sharing.
