Good to watch your video's, your doing everything that I wanted to do at the strid ever since I was your age, im 60 now and have been visiting there for many years, in 1976 there was a massive draught it was the hottest summer I can ever remember, the rivers and the reservoir's were at there all time lows, I visited the strid at that time and what I saw was amazing, I will never forget it. The water was so low you could see all under the hanging rocks, it went as far back as I could see, small round caves and large overhangs further down. I was about 14 and had no such thing as a camera. I go back about twice a year and always remember what it was like, I want to tell everyone there what I saw. on another note I once nearly jumped across as a dare from mates at the time, i'm glad I didn't. keep up the good work, love it

Ah i'm just looking at the very small percentage when i say that. Majority of the comments are super nice. Most of my fears of doing youtube came from the comments that i might get but my advice to anyone wanting to start is if you be yourself you have nothing to worry about
Sometimes when somebody says something in text, it’s up to the reader to decide the context because you can’t see their face. You can’t see how they’re saying it they could just be excited at the fact that you both look similar, loving the Harry Potter series and loving your channel so it’s hard to say sometimes but as for me, I did enjoy finding out how deep the street was even though never hearing of it before is a warning also for swimmers anywhere just because it’s narrow does not mean it’s not deep.
Appreciate you being a respectful with the camera in general, and what a lovely couple you ran across to talk to. Enjoyed you bringing us along with you again. cheers

Wow! What an incredible place . Being Aussie I’ve never heard of the strid but here in Aus we have a cursed pool called Babinda pools. Any MEN that fall into it never make it out alive due to local Aborigines believe a husband pushed his wife into the pools and drowned her hundreds of years ago. Now her spirit haunts the pools and any men who fall in the pools 100% they drown!!
Thanks for another fascinating video. I remember Desolation Valley from the days of my youth. Apparently, no dogs are allowed there now probably because of the game birds. Same goes for most of the Yorkshire Moors: dogs have to be on leads at all times. Ironically, dogs may well be used to flush the birds out in the hunt. Very much looking forward to seeing more videos of The Strid.
Yeah there was a sign that said no dogs in that area at all. There was loads of game birds there everywhere i looked i could see them running about. Loads of people were there today to have a good hunt!

Me and my fiance were walking this summer and got talking to 3 guys, all friendly, but one of them was pretty flippant as to the strids dangers and was jumping back and forth over a narrow section. Many people geuinely don't grasp the dangers of falling in.
I just heard about the strid today and now I've binged on all your videos and they are FASCINATING!!!! I have commented on one of your other videos that I do fear for your safety in going there alone! I wish you had a partner and maybe a way to tether yourself in case you slip! Regarding there secretism, they are a surprisingly scummy company for such a beautiful area. I live in Ilkley and regularly cycle there and despite getting government funding for letting cyclists through they were not letting any of us through dismounted or mounted our bikes. They were also caught with rabbit snares (illegally) recently. There whole logging business is also moderately dodgy. Its a usual thing with estates to abuse there money and power, especially with them housing the queen’s Yorkshire home (just by the abbey) they are very rich… The less we know, the better they do…
They also get the local farmers on these Farm Business tennancys to get the farmers to restore the old farm houses or somewhat and then when the 10 year contract is up they send them on Thier way, they tried to get my father to sign to an FBT but he absolutely refused it because he knew what was going to go down and then a year later they were trying to get us off with change of use on the land and using planning permission to turn the farm into "storage and offices" we had a two year battle with them but they didn't get us off the farm, they don't appreciate any locals and my family has been farming there for 300 years, can't wait to battle them again when the tennancy gets passed down
Yeah given all the money that they have, you'd also think that they wouldn't charge such an extortionate amount to park there for the day. It's all money grabbing 😠

Loved this little video series around the strid! Im in Birmingham, but i love travelling around the UK, i've done a weekend around the Yorkshire Dales and i've added the strid to a little bookmark list of places to visit next time i come up that way! Jealous of how close to Wales and the Peak District you are Jess there are way too many places I want to see in Wales. When you do go visit there is a circular walk of the entire estate that will take you a few hours and a couple places to stop for lunch too. Have a good time 😀
I hated to hear they were going to shoot pheasants. I'm in Oregon in the USA, when I was a kid they were everywhere. I've not seen one in over 40 years. No quail either. Makes me sad. Since the 70s mankind has rid our planet of 60% of it's creatures. I'm 64 and I miss not hearing all the wildlife that we did so long ago.
The Pheasants on these estates are heavily managed. They probably wouldn't be there without the shoots, certainly not in the numbers they are. Same with grouse too. Personally I can't see the attraction, I only shoot wildlife with a camera.
I’m neither for or against it personally but I understand why it is a sensitive subject. I think the estate breed the pheasants and then host a hunt for members of the estate. You’re not allowed dogs in that section I was filming as they don’t want your dog messing with the population they so carefully managed
Pheasants are not native to anywhere but East Asia. So don’t worry too much about them, in fact they’ll end up competing with native birds like Mourning Doves. Also the reason why you saw many of them back then was due to huge interest hunting them and so many farms were made to breed and release them for sport.
I saw a headless pheasant standing next to a busy road. Half a mile further was a tractor mowing in the direction of the pheasant. I returned an hour later to well cut verges and no pheasant.

Hey Jack I just left a comment but I just thought of something there's a Channel call dive talk where two expert cave divers react to videos of diving and things like that but it would be cool if you linked up with those guys because they would have some great Insight on it they're extra cave divers and possibly maybe they could help you find somebody or even them that would be willing to take the steps to make a dive

Hunting is why they don’t like to talk. Rules aren’t followed on purpose so they can kill more animals for their enjoyment. Of course they don’t want to be on camera. Excellent videos dude
Great videos on the Strid fella. In prep for the dive you should get a wind speed reader on a long pole and pop it in the water. Will help you identify any calmer spots as well as know exactly how fast the water flows through there 👍
to convert the temps - double the number, add 30, its within 1-2degrees from that answer.. something i remembered from a kid, no idea who told me but it sticks like the Never Eat Shredded Wheat for the directions in clock order (so east & west wasnt mixed around)
They care for the land so much though I have no idea what they wouldn’t want us to know. They have people collecting litter and rebuilding walkways ect it is a very well kept area.

Land is incredibly valuable and you have no idea how valuable it is!! Or maybe you do now. If I had that much land that was mine you better believe I would protect it above and beyond😅

Ferocious looking river! First thought - stay back, way back! Truly one would have serious misgivings about approaching that water. I was a daredevil in my youth, but that would have scared me. Put a fishing bobble in the Strid follow it down to see where it emerges, and look at the remains. Then consider that's U!!! 🤔🤨😑😥🙏🏼👵
That'll be a factor - when the farm/estate over the road from me does a hunt it causes all kinds of friction and inevitably results in a big police presence - the last one had around 200 protestors turn up and a brawl kicked off when someone accidentally drove into someone else's car.
@@Rroff2 yeah, those protesters are a nightmare for people like this that still hunt. All them fox hunter's had massive issues not that many years ago, I kind of understood that though, getting a pack of hounds to rip a fox to shreds was a bit unnessacary, still the protester's went too far, it was all a complete mess so I can understand them not wanting be on video shooting or about to shoot pheasants.
I was wondering if it would be possible to dam it as well without affecting the ecology. Probably not but would be amazing to see if it ever did happen.
I’m sure it’s theoretically doable but why? Just to see what’s under there? Look for remains? PS: There won’t be any btw - except for teeth, they’ve long decomposed. Short version, there’s other more feasible survey methods.
:How about someone resolve the depth issue the old fashioned way? Drop a lead sinker at the end of a stout chain and run it off an anchored winch. You should be able to do it without damaging anything if you have a few stout Hobbits to handle the equipment.

Nice to get the locals opinion about the strid as they'll no doubt have the more obscure tales to tell. The people on the hunt just want privacy. It seems everybody that wears a certain type of glasses automatically become a Harry Potter lookalike lol.

Easiest way to work out Fahrenheit is to double and add 28, or thereabouts. Some add 32, but it's more accurate using the double and add 28 technique.

I THINK the reason the estates try to keep things quite is that the less the public knows about them and what they do the better.

Ferocious looking river! First thought - stay back, way back! Truly one would have serious misgivings about approaching that water. I was a daredevil in my youth, but that would have scared me. Put a fishing bobble in the Strid follow it down to see where it emerges, and look at the remains. Then consider that's U!!!

the pheasant hunter's are probably worried about animal right's groups finding out who they are or what they're doing.
That'll be a factor - when the farm/estate over the road from me does a hunt it causes all kinds of friction and inevitably results in a big police presence - the last one had around 200 protestors turn up and a brawl kicked off when someone accidentally drove into someone else's car.
@@Rroff2 yeah, those protesters are a nightmare for people like this that still hunt. All them fox hunter's had massive issues not that many years ago, I kind of understood that though, getting a pack of hounds to rip a fox to shreds was a bit unnessacary, still the protester's went too far, it was all a complete mess so I can understand them not wanting be on video shooting or about to shoot pheasants.
Make a petition to completely stop the water flow of the strid untill the strid itself becomes dry or slows to a stop.. :O
I was wondering if it would be possible to dam it as well without affecting the ecology. Probably not but would be amazing to see if it ever did happen.
I’m sure it’s theoretically doable but why? Just to see what’s under there? Look for remains? PS: There won’t be any btw - except for teeth, they’ve long decomposed. Short version, there’s other more feasible survey methods.

:How about someone resolve the depth issue the old fashioned way? Drop a lead sinker at the end of a stout chain and run it off an anchored winch. You should be able to do it without damaging anything if you have a few stout Hobbits to handle the equipment.
