The Cross - Good Friday Homily 2022

  • The Liturgy of Good Friday brings all Christians face to face with the Cross of Christ and we should never reduce it to a mere symbol. Instead we should accept the cross for what it was meant to be- a brutal instrument of terror, torture and death imposed by humanity’s propensity towards cruelty and violence. Before the cross was a symbol of our faith it was a weapon to foment fear and accomplish subjugation.
This is the truth about the cross but because God in Christ accepted the cross and conquered it through his divine love, we Christians do not fear the cross, but instead we hold it up, display to all those worldly powers that would use fear and threats as a means of coercion and control. We hold up the cross, as a taunt to the fallen powers of the world proclaiming to them- you think this frightens us?
God in Christ overcame the horror of the cross and in this sign the fallen powers of the world are subverted, sin, death and the devil are vanquished. It is in this sign, the sign of the cross, that we see the victory of God in Christ is assured!

Our Father who art in Heaven,
    Hallowed by thy name,
    Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
    And lead us
    Not into temptation but
    Deliver us
    From evil.
    For thine is the Kingdom
    And the power
    And the GLORY
    Forever.
    Amen
    //
Bless you and your passion for The Christ.
May he grant you forever his passion to teach, to heal, to forgive and give from the bounties of his Love the compassion for and to his harvest until he comes again.
Pray for me as you pray for the least of those in his creation. Pray for his guidance and my obedience to his will in my life. I will pray the same for you.

Reminds me of Jordan Peterson's take on the crucifixion during his most recent Joe Rogan podcast. However, Bishop Barron takes the connection between the serpent in the desert and the Cross of Christ from a mere psychological interpretation of the nature of fear to a deeper and more robust theological interpretation. That God is with us in the most literal way in times of pain and suffering because of the Cross of Christ. God bless you.

It has always been a troublesome point for me to understand that I was healed by the cross, by the blood, by the wounds, by the suffering of Jesus. He carried our sins, etc.where is the justice of that? Why did He had to suffer for MY sins? Well, for the first time in my life I saw a light illuminating this spot. Explained the way you did it, Bishop Barron, makes sense. Thank you.

I had a chance to experience that past Good Friday. There was something about passing of the Cross, it made me realize the weight of the Cross in a single moment that was tremendous for me, what more for Jesus, he carried it all the way to the hill of Golhotha. Unimaginable weight and physical torment.

I very much needed to hear a sermon about the crucifixion that wasn't boiler plate 'YOUR SINS PUT HIM THERE!' it's been a few years of struggling with my Church... Not exactly my faith , but the failings of the institution the church has become and it has been more of a stumbling block than a balm for me. Hearing things out the way you have realty puts flesh on the "follow me" call vs the "worship me" which to me seems the church's fall back lazy teaching... Anyway, thank you and Happy Easter

We're seeing the resurrection in light of the crucifixion. Bishop Robert Barron, how often would Mary's first question at the Annunciation, How can it be?, have been repeated by Mary, the Apostles, and by the disciples? When Mary held her sons dead body, How can this be? When St. Mary of Magdalene and St. Peter first saw the empty tomb, How can it be? When the resurrected Jesus appeared "in the breaking of the bread" on the road to Emmaus, How can this be? Isn't this because Our Lord God is always here? If Jesus, the Son of God, was ever once here, then, wouldn't God's presence always be with us? For is it not "in the breaking of the bread" that becomes His body in which Christ Jesus, Himself is present at every Mass?

    JESUS EASTER SONG !
There once was a traveler who was driven out of town
On His shoulders was a burden that pushed Him to the ground.
On His head was a crown made of thorns from a bush
And the street was so crowded the guards had to push.
They beat Him with nine tails each step of the way
Where Christ found the strength, only God could say.
They stopped at some sandstone at the top of a hill
There was a round hole the cross would soon fill.
They made Him lie down upon that wood cross
There they nailed Him to prove who was boss.
The beam was up-ended by the muscles of men
As it plunged down the hole it was carved to fit in.
Then Jesus looked up at the lightning that flew
And cried, God, my Father, they know not what they do.
They crucified our Lord as His blood flowed to Earth
If inside you believe, you feel what love is worth.
They wrapped Him in loincloth when He was taken down
Then carefully removed His scarlet stained crown.
They placed Him in a cave with a large, round, stone door
Before sealing forever, they lay lilies on the floor.
It wasn't very long, and the stone was rolled away
For Jesus resurrected, to rise on Easter Day!
No greater love has ever been shown
No greater love has ever been known.

one of the official struck him in the face.
" Is this the way you answer the high priest?"
    he demanded.
    24 Then,
    Annas sent him,
    still bound, to Caiaphas
    the high priest.
    25 As Simon Peter
    stood warming himself,
    he was asked,
    You are not one of
    his disciples, are you ?"
    He denied it, saying,
    I am not."
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him,
" Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?"
    27 Again Peter denied it,
and at that moment the rooster began to crow.
    Then the Jews led Jesus
from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.
By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness
the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, What charges are you bringing against this man ?"
30 " If he were not a criminal " they replied,
we would not hand him over to you."
31 Pilate said, Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law."
" But we have no right to execute anyone, " the Jews objected.
32 This happen so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him,
    " Are you the king
    of the Jews ? "
34 "Is that your own idea,"
Jesus asked, " or did others talk to you about me?"
    35 "Am I a Jew ? "
    Pilate replied.
    " It was your people
    and your chief preist
who handed you over to me. What is it you have done? "
    36 Jesus said,
" My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, the servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews.
But now my own kingdom is from another place."
37 You are a king, then!"
    said Pilate.
Jesus answered," You are right in saying I am a king.
    In fact, for this reason
I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.
Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
38 "What is truth ?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, " I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 "But it is your custom for me to release one prisoner at the time of Passover.
Do you want me to release the king of Jews?"
40 They shouted back, " No, not him! Give us Barabbas ! Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.

There is no such thing as Good Friday! Christ was crucified on Thursday!
Was Jesus crucified on "Good Friday"? Indeed not. Jesus himself had said, "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth [i.e., in that part of Hades known as "Abraham's bosom"]" (Mat:12:40; Lk 16:22). The gospel includes the declaration that Christ "rose again the third day" (1 Cor:15:4).
Obviously, had Christ been crucified on Friday, He couldn't possibly have spent three days and three nights in the grave by Sunday morning. We are distinctly told that the angel rolled away the stone "as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week" (Mat:28:1). The tomb was already empty at that point, so Christ must have risen from the dead sometime prior to dawn.
Yet the myth of a "Good Friday" crucifixion persists, with much ritual and dogma built upon that obvious mistake. In this fact alone we have sufficient evidence of Rome's manufacture and endorsement of untruth to cast doubt upon everything else it affirms with equal dogmatism. And what can be said for the Protestants who, by the millions, so willingly go along with this error?
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday-does it really matter? Yes! The day of our Lord's crucifixion is of the utmost importance. If Christ was not three days and three nights in the grave, then He lied. Moreover, His death, to fulfill prophecy, had to occur at the very time the passover lambs were being slain throughout Israel. It is an astronomical fact that Nisan 14, A.D. 32, fell on Thursday.
"And it was the preparation of the passover....The Jews therefore...that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day...besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away" (Jn:19:14,31). Wait! Not a bone of the passover lamb (Ex 12:46) or of the Messiah (Ps:34:20) could be broken. Not knowing why he did it, "one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side" (Jn:19:34), fulfilling yet another scripture: "they shall look upon me whom they pierced" (Zec:12:10).
John explains that the "sabbath" which began at sunset the Thursday Christ was crucified "was an high day." It was, in fact, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, of which the first and last days were special sabbaths during which no work was to be done. That "high" sabbath ended Friday at sunset and was immediately followed by the weekly sabbath which ended at sunset on Saturday. Thus two sabbaths followed Christ's death, preventing the women from coming to the grave until the third day, Sunday morning.
I would like to add a comment that was made when this post was originally made:

Jesus was crucified on the 14th of Nisan and was resurrected on the 17th of Nisan. When you look at a Hebrew calendar you will see that for the 17th to fall on a Sunday then the 14th would have fallen on a Thursday. We know the Feast of First Fruits is on the 17th of Nisan. We know that Jesus arose on the first day of the week which means that Sunday had to be Nisan 17.
Not only is Jesus resurrected on the 17th of Nisan (Feast of First Fruits) but there are other things that in the Scriptures that occurred on Nisan 17.
I would like to share them with you......
The Seventeenth of Nisan -- Resurrection and Salvation
The theme of the festival of First Fruits is resurrection and salvation. There are several important events that happened on this day in the Bible.
1.Noah's (Noach) ark rests on Mount Ararat (Genesis 8:4).
2.Israel crosses the Red Sea (Exodus [Shemot] 3:18; 5:3, 14).
3.Israel eats the first fruits of the Promised Land (Joshua 5:10-12). The manna that G-d gave from Heaven during the days in the wilderness ceased the sixteenth day of Nisan after the people ate of the old corn of the land. The day following was the seventeenth of Nisan, the day when the children of Israel ate the first fruits of the Promised Land.
4.Haman is defeated (Esther 3:1-6). In the Book of Esther, Haman plotted to kill all the Jews in Persia and Media. Haman had ten sons (Esther 9:12). By this, we can see that Haman is a type of the false Messiah (antichrist). A decree was sent out on the thirteenth of Nisan that all the Jews would be killed (Esther 3:12). Upon hearing this news, Esther proclaims a three-day fast, which would be Nisan 14-16 (Esther 4:16). On the sixteenth of Nisan, Esther risked her life when she came to King Ahasuerus. The king asked her, in effect, "Tell me, what do you want?" Esther said, "If it please the king, may the king and Haman come this day to the banquet that I have prepared for him" (Esther 5:4 NAS). This was the sixteenth day of Nisan. At the banquet, the king again asked Esther what she wanted, and she asked the king to come to another banquet to be held the next day, the seventeenth of Nisan. On this day, Haman (a type of the false Messiah or antichrist, as well as of satan [Ha satan]) is hanged.
5.The resurrection of Yeshua, the Messiah (John 12:24; 1 Corinthians 15:16-20). Yeshua celebrated the festival of First Fruits by offering Himself as the first fruits to all future generations (Matthew [Mattityahu] 27:52-53).

You've made a mistake in your calculations.
      1) "Three days and three nights" was a Jewish idiomatic saying that was not referring to a literal 72-hour period. Though He was not in the grave for a literal 72-hour period, He did not lie.
