- ►After seeing success at the dyno following a handmade exhaust from Josh at 8Eight Fab in Episode 4, Jacob is ready to squeeze a bit more "oomph" out of the 850's RN 5-Cylinder before heading back to the FCP Euro Proving Grounds at Lime Rock Park.
With a generous amount of knowledge and expertise from a friend of FCP Euro, Alex Nelson, Jacob FINALLY sets about mating the individual throttle bodies from a BMW S85 V10 onto his Volvo 5-cylinder with some custom-designed and laser sintered (SLS) metal 3d prints. Not only are they hoping the ITBs will provide power gains and throttle response synonymous with ITBs, but they also want to pay proper tribute to the glorious 850 of BTCC racing fame! Will Jacob finally make the power he's been searching for?

Y'all wanna make me some 1gzfe v12 itbs? LOL
You know what'd be real nice? Share the print file with us Volvo guys. My V70 and C70 could use this fun bit :P
Forget about it.... its not cheap. I prefer DBILLAS itb but.... scan it and pri t it.... nice :)
A kit would be nice too 🎉
@@Jer0m3 itb to street car is not a very not good idea. Forget about fuel economy, forget about nice iddle, its way more.efficient to intstall turbo or... jist to buy a t5 :)
@@ppanek who need that when you got awesome sound?!
Some people do track builds. It would be nice if they offered the files or on demand production of this thing for those interested.
Alex is a killer. Been following him for a long time. Glad he is getting the publicity he deserves as an engineer.
True MVP on this one - we are so glad to have him here full time now! Lots more to come 😬
Alex Nelson da 🐐🚫🧢
lol he knows how to do his job so he "deserves publicity"
@@nutsackmania that dude can accomplish what would take an engineering team and 4x the timeline a few decades ago; To find that skillset wrapped into one human that's as passionate as him is a rarity.
@@nutsackmania right? I feel like I need to show up and show fcp another “real” employee
If you ever feel like dropping some decent money into this, ACM in Sweden has a stroker crank which brings the engine to 2.7 liters with the 83mm bore of the 2.5 engine. And I'm sure Scimec Motor in Norway have some good cams for it.
I support this
And E85!
Looks like we have some emails to write.... 🤔
a CNC ported P2 R head (there are a couple places with CNC programs), big valves and hot cams would really wake it up.
So cool. You Scandos do some cool things with cars. In Australia we just have the humble Ford Barra Turbo. Run on 98 Octane it's makes 420 NM at 3250 rpm - without a turbo. With a turbo...
PLEASE sell this kit. You are in the perfect position to make this widely available. There are very few other CZcams car builds that are backed by a parts company. Plus all the expensive R&D of designing the kit is already done, all you have to do is make it available to the public. Total win-win. PLEASSSSEEEE
You don't even have to stock them, they can be printed to order. That way there's no initial investment for FCP if it flops.
I have zero regret subscribing to this channel since your last 850 video.
This just made our day bigboybad ☺
We need this as a kit for us to make N/A builds to😍
Leaving the mic on Alex when he left was awsome!!😄
The nosies!!!😍 I could listen to those sounds day and night….wait it feels like I…have?
I love this build series! The N/A 5 cylinder sounds amazing, such a cool project
ITBs are on my wish list for the 240 redblock ❤ coolest looking bit of kit on an engine hands down, love the mechanical look of it all.
My favorite build atm, you guys are killing it! 🔥
I just discovered your channel. Those game transitions are THE BEST.
As previous 850 owner, this is really wild ! ❤
God damn, those those ITB’s sound fantastic 👍 Great work to see in stages of design 🔥
I Would love it if you guys could make the 3d model public or sell the manifold parts. Would be a godsend since i have a set of these ITB's sitting on my desk!
Love this series. True car geek stuff.
Glad you're enjoying it!!
Basically doing the same thing with the intake air box of my truck... minus the 3d scanner tool and the ITBs. Printing in ASA. Scuffed it and sprayed with high heat engine enamel paint because I want overkill on temperature management lol 3D printing has made custom parts a full win for the DIYers who arent 100% on metal fabrication
We need this as a kit
looking good Jacob, cant wait to see you fit our BTCC air dam 😉
Excellent work with this video series! We Volvo enthusiasts are a unique bunch. For the NA 5-cylinder, that 175 whp number is very impressive! Ignoring any other variables and estimating drivetrain loss for the M56 gearbox to be 20%, that would put you at 219 bhp.
One of the results of shaving the cylinder head on the original BTCC 850 engine was an increased compression ratio. If you guys ever tear into the bottom end, a set of 13.5:1 JE pistons would probably bump up your dyno numbers. It might require 95 octane fuel or an octane booster additive though.
Love the series. I'm not a Volvo guy, but I'm definitely an N/A guy. I'm surprised that it doesn't make even more power than this. A 5cyl engine with ITB and full exhaust that makes the same power as a stock K24A2. It sounds sooo good. I want it to be more!
All about the cams. It needs way more cam and RPM to get more power out of it.
i love that series great job guys
Wow nice work!
So sick this project is!!
This is insane, i need those
I've recently subbed. Cool content. Sticking N/A is very hard to do. It's a little loud for my taste, but you guys are killing this build!!!
Thanks for subscribing! N/A is definitely not the easy way, but it makes for something much more unique! The car is loud....thankfully, it's not a daily driver!
My godddd this sounds and looks so good
Out-fucking-standing! Awesome work by all!
Awesome work 👌
It's sounds absolutely amazing! Can't wait to see more of this project! #5cylindersordeath
(previous 12 year owner of a 2004 V70 T5M B5423T daily, and long time FCP customer).
fantastic content guys ! What are the mods done to the engine? I want to build all motor with pretty much same recipe as TWR did back in day. is the head stock and still makes this much more power or you have some mild cams in it, it defo sounds not stockish :D
I just watched all the videos in this series and man, this is good! It makes me wanna sell my P2 V70R and build a track 850
Thanks for taking the time to catch up! Hope you enjoyed it!
Sounds great
So good 🤩🙏🏻
As a previous owner of multiple 5 pot whiteblocks and an e60 M5, I rate this video 11/10, would recommend.
Also at 200 crank HP, it’s not far off the specific output of the S85…. Well, without the M button pressed anyway.
Mind blown. Amazing what can be done and realized nowadays. I ve had an idea about something similar and a good idea of how to go about doing it. Just no idea where to start or who has the experience to do it
Hope to see it again at Carlisle next year hopefully in the exhaust comp and autocross
We'd love to bring it to Carlisle again!
Will Jacob be coming to Swedish Car day at the Larz Anderson in August? I've seen this car in person twice already, but I want MORE! Such a great series, keep up the amazing work y'all!
We think we can arrange for that to happen... Thanks for the support!
What a cool cat that guy 👍 never come across him before, but wow hes got some goodies 🛠
That’s so sick.
damn cool setup!
So now it needs cams, lol the evo of car builds is always great, love the build
Damn FCP y'all have blown this out of the water please please tell us the next step is forged internals 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏🙏THIS BUILD IS PURE GOLD😤🤯😵💫and I just ordered my merch today😉
I'd love to hear a quieter exhaust to make that intake sound shine
Supercool video!
It sounds amazing, but is that the cat at the end of the exhaust?
Man this is awsome, I'd love to have a set of ITB's like that for my B5254S but I dont think they would fit under the hood of my build.
cool flash light
Beautiful
..I'm kinda hoping this becomes something you can buy down the road lol
It makes the sound!
I going to make my t5r NA now😅
@fcpeuro I'd like to see a video of how you guys did the electric power steering pump. what was used in place of the old pump, routing of the belt ect. want to do the same with my 850.
This is awesome! Now let's turbo it. It would be a killer setup
Why build a badass Intake just to remove it and install a turbo?
Love to see Pat going "PUSH ITTT" with the hands like seriously SHE WANTS IT!
Please would you tell me the names of the music tracks in this video. Love the ITB sound in the inline 5 👍
Beautifully sound...next cams and nitrous plz
So Sick.
This thing sounds awesome. 175 whp is actually not bad for an old na 5 cylinder. I would love to see a drag race between this and a stock 850r
So i'm wondering how does this translate then to the GLT engine with 20 valves, because that is already 170hp from the factory, how come this one is only 5hp more with all these upgrades?
Look up the IE VW 2.5 na build one of those guys did. 300hp na full engine build over 9k rpm
@@Jerra3007 GLT is 170hp at the engine. This car made 175 hp to the wheels. 175whp would be above 200 at the engine
@@cumbob yes i saw that. I love the engine dyno video where it revved to 9400rpm. It sounded insane
👍Alex is a real professional 👍
when doing fuel line work and a 850 / X70 car. Use 740/940 fuel filter instead! It is the same but there is no pushlock on them. and the inside diameter is bigger than 850. There is a M12 1.5 and M14 1.5 connection. It is more easy to do this was and maybe even a bit cheaper and easy to replace the fuel filter now and then.
Cams, valves + springs, and headwork soon? Then maybe lightweight internals? I want one of these motors in a 940 now haha
Jacob, why You didn't choose the 2,5 liter 20 valve powerplant? That engine is blast from the stock and with those improvements it could have been a total beast.
I think they are trying to mimic the volvo btcc car
@@throckmortonthebrave6634 well for that they would need to use a 2L
@@Stale_Mahoney that is true
@@throckmortonthebrave6634 If I am not wrong, originally, TWR used 2,3 liter turbo engine with dismounted turbo and reduced engine volume. For my project I use B5204S. My guess would be, that Jacob eventually will go for that 20 valve head, because 175hp is just not enough, but there are still many ways to increase the power. Good luck Jacob!
In season 1, we replaced the 850's original 20v 2.4 N engine with the updated RN 2.4 liter 20v from a P2.
is there a way to get the files and is there a way to get ITBs on a electronic throttle body setup on the p2?
Mate been slow to the game with this 850 flex but love a Volvo me just recently got rid of my v40 sport & loved evey reliable start it gave me genuinely gutted i sold it for a (u ready?) Alfa Romeo mito (needed it for work) which 2 b fair has been ok (watch it die tomoz). Keep up good work mate frm the UK 😎😎✌✌👌👌👍👍
Great project, one M5 can support two Volvos :) A Volvo 5 cylinder without a Turbo is slower but with these trumpets it sounds better for longer :)
Any plans for big cams? @SimplyVolvo had large gains with his cams, plus a wonderful idle. I think he did KM 280 duration
The car is in major need of more cam - season 3 plans?? Engine build time.
Is this ITB kit ever gonna be available to purchase?.
How much does that manafold coast - if you would like to OWN ONE?
NICE SOUND!
godly noise, god damnnnnn
Are those new S85 injectors? I've been waiting for them to become available. My car is due for a refresh but they've been on back order for a while now🙏
How much for that spare p2 head? I need one currently and your website doesn't have any listed for sale.
Legend has it, Vipers are just 2 Volvo engines smashed together
damn thats cool!
right so am I gonna have to put one of these in my 318ti?
“In the BIN!”
Already letting the new guy work his magic!
we figured we might as well 😂
Hello, do you have the 10 valve or 20 valve engine?
I just assumed that when scanning, one had to have a stable platform like a tripod. Didn't know there were handheld scanners.
Yep , really a flexible system when using a handheld like that!
What's with the converter on the exhaust tip?
You can modify the fan housing to make it fit closer to
Bumper and give you more room.
✂
I need this!!!
Assuming 15% was lost from the engine to the wheels, youre around 210hp. HELL YEAH BROTHER! Great stuff. Cams next?😁😁
Ya crank we technicallllyy hit out goal of 200 haha! Cams are a must on the dockit .
3D metal printing 🤙
Now it's time for a big set of chonky cams
But also, if you guys could sell this as a kit, that would be great
If people would buy it we would consider listing it! Lot that would have to go into it - but doable! Also , yes, cam time! Season 3 ... engine build!?
@@fcpeuro maybe sell the digital models for people to figure out how to make on their own?
Damn, you really are serious about this project, aren't you?
🤘👍
We are in too deep not to!
Time for some killer cams
I work in the dentistry, this spray and scan technology is what we did back in 2003, you guys should probably check out some medical grade scanners, no need to spray paint to get a 3d printing model. Super accurate and efficient, can probably scan the entire engine bay within 30 seconds.
And the size of the scanner is just a little bigger than an electrical tooth brush. Btw, wireless too.
And the price?
@@Jer0m3 somewhere between $25k to $50k
'Proper tribute' to BTCC.. Volvo's BTCC technichians would cry if they had seen the 'artpiece' of an exhaust on this 850 😂 Guessing the inlet manifold will have at least three 180° bends on it? 😮 😅
The cams are stock or have big cams?
18:10 ok be honest how many more times you took that manifold off? :D
Is this running a stock ecu or aftermarket?
It's only taken 9 years!! Hahaha, now that's love, no wonder he's got her on his chest!! Imma need ones of those shirts bud
It would be cool to see a collaboration video with Charles from humble mechanic
this engine in a lightweight 142/242 would be glourious!
YUSSSS!
Cool shit you guys. Great video.
was that aidan templin?
Can you get a good vacuum signal without a plenum?
This is a speed-density based tune, so only an IAT is required.
