    Brilliant use of the stringers for the underside of the table. Looks completely organic, like a pallet suddenly evolved into a table.
    ...which is kinda the point. Nice piece, nice work.

    When the pallets are wet from a good rain they are easier to take apart. Nail Punch! The nail heads add to the look of the pallet wood but you are right about the danger when planing the boards.

    What I've found out watching these recycled wood videos the best finishing product for these kind of projects is varnish. That's because the wood is usually uneven color and there is holes and nicks and stuff like that so the varnish darkens the wood, gives more used and old look and I like that!

    To make things easier when lining up the slats to make the chevron, you can take a straight board and screw it up and down on the board you are using and then use it as the guide for one entire side. Unscrew the board you used and connect the second side easily lines up!
    Great Project!!

    I used your video to make my own table as my first wood working project. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I had to use some cleating to help brace the 4x4s. The pallet wood ended up being a little warped and needed the bracing to all fit straight. Also, I salvaged the side pieces from the scrap pile, because the scalloped pieces were in really rough shape. Thanks!

    Great to see people reclaiming wood. I do turning and have buckets full of cut-off little pieces to use as accents on larger ones. I HATE to throw out wood. Nice work on the table. Looking to build some larger pieces for my youngest daughter - she loves that style too. The guy doing the floors in his tattoo studio, Doc Hyde, could frame the edge of the room like you did the top and then fill in with the chevrons or whatever pattern he wanted to. Just a thought.

    I agree with you. I work in hardwood flooring and precise and faster cuts to get 45 degrees work much better on a chop saw, preferrably one that has a slide. Clamping a few boards at a time together prevents the pieces traveling and you get uniform cuts.We use the table saw for ripping. 45 degree cuts, wears out the blade much faster. Blade changes are faster on a chop saw.

    I built the prettiest little library (behind-the-couch) table a few years back. Kept my eyes peeled and collected a bunch of pallets made from maple (!?). Planed off all the wear and schmutz, left the deeper stains and nail holes. Made an excellent combination of newish-looking wood with obvious distressing from old use.
    Then it got broken by careless use. Don't make fine furniture for use in homeless shelters, you will be disappointed.

    Left a message for the BeachBum but wanted to say, you could frame the edge of your studio like he did on the top. Do that first to set your dimensions, and then fill in with the chevrons or whatever design you want. You can do all kinds of designs, it just depends how much time cutting and glueing and nailing you want to do. Good luck with it!!

    came out looking very good. Where the chevron points meet you could use a 1/4 X 1 inch piece of poplar down the center for a cool contrast. Stand the poplar up so the 1/4 inch width is sandwiched between the chevron ends. Poplar when just clear coated leaves a striking dirty blond color that I've used on instruments along with holly around the edges. Not a thing wrong with what you did here, just giving you some future ideas.

    Love it BeachBum! I make stuff too! May I suggest? Pre-drill plywood 1/4" drop in flush head threaded bolts, then attach your boards on top. Use Titebond 2 Glue, resists water and stronger. When u make base, drill holes thru base, glue base to table underside, tighten nuts and washers. I have done wine barrel tables like that. Much stronger, can dance on table. Love your work, Bravo sir!!!!!! Maybe some fire brand logos to top? Burn images to top?

    Breaking down pallets is a big job. I've done it both ways and cutting the nails with a sawz-all is best since using a pry bar usually results in breaking and splitting the wood. The nails used in pallets are very hard to remove if pulling out.

    that was pretty cool, I do a lot of pallet makes, last build was a goose and duck house took about 20 pallets as it was real big. also one thing I noticed was you nailed from the top, I would have g-clapped the glued wood and nailed from the bottom, also I would have screwed the skirt and legs to the plywood base before putting down the top, That way all those screws and nails would be invisible and if ever you decide to then plaining wont be a problem as nails wont be an issue

    guys, if you're going to use pallets please look up info on safety and the stamps that are on the pallets. Some have wood that isn't usable and some are treated with toxic chemicals. The stamps will be found on the wood from the lumber company.

    • @AdamOsso77
      @AdamOsso77 Před 10 lety

      Just about all wood is treated. Unless you cut or eat the wood it will not kill you.

    • @schpoingle
      @schpoingle Před 10 lety

      It's not treated with methyl bromide like pallets often are. Hanging the wood on the wall is one thing but if it's used for a coffee table where there is heavy interaction you might want to use some caution mixed with facts. Even without chemicals from lumber companies, what's on the wood can effect it. There was an e.coli outbreak some years ago and 10% of the pallets tested positive for it. Advising people to use information and caution is the best route.

      if you seal it with a water based polyurethane it should be fine ..Unless your a super granola chemical free freak ..LOL..in which case you should move to the remote wilderness where their are no cars or plastic... I know their are many carcinogenic things we should be careful and as chemical free as possible but it is a part of being a person in the western world .If you have a girl friend who wears make up it would blow your mind if you knew the poison they put in even the most expensive make up

    • @jtm594
      @jtm594 Před 8 lety

    hey if you use a jemmy or crowbar like me try wetting the pallets with hose for about 1 hour and boards will come off easy without breaking which is a pain but hey they make good firewood too as most are not treated I used recycled pallets to make a recycling box at home and some left over fence stain to seal it from the weather and its working fine after almost 2 years use and banana boxes from the supermarket make great containers for separating things

    pallet woods can be highly toxic for in house use.look for pallets stamped with an “HT”, which means they haven’t been exposed to chemicals (at least not in the treating process.) Avoid unmarked pallets or those with “MB” for methyl bromide.

      Just because pallets are heat treated does not mean they haven't been exposed to chemicals. It simply means the pallets have been heated at 133* F for 30 minutes to ensure any residue such as chemicals or foods are killed so the pallets can be used for export.

    I'm so happy I found your chevron pattern coffee table! I want to use the same pattern on the 2 doors on a bathroom vanity I bought at the Habitat ReStore. I got some pallets just for this project. I think it would be much easier to use the coffee table top idea you have, but to my vanity door dimensions, and then just cut it in half down the center. I've been trying to figure out how I was going to make my vision happen. Thanks for posting!!!

    Wish I could put one of those in my second living area. Businesses around here seem to hoard pallets. I tried to find some a few months back but most places here lock them up behind fences. lol! Maybe when I get some nice power tools I'll throw up an add to request some to pick up. Great video.
