  • This video is about the sources of NOISE from an Outdoor Air Conditioning unit. I go over how to assess the situation, what questions to ask the homeowner, how to resolve simple issues and the difference between the two types of residential refrigerant compressors! Supervision is needed by a licensed HVAC Tech before doing this as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

    Thanks for the video. It gave me a little piece of mind. I just had a Heil 2-ton put in my 1190 square foot house and it makes twice as much noise as my old 18 year old grand aire compressor that was still kicking :-) so I was concerned with the noise and wondering if the unit was defective or not. Or they were bad bearings. Thank you :-)
    one question.. I went to turn the temperature down one notch and it seems that when I went to do it the outside compressor had just turned off but the inside unit was still running. When I did this it appeared to send a surge to the compressor bad enough to shut it down. It sounded like the compressor was going to take off for about 10 seconds or more. Is this normal? I asked the company to come out and check everything and they put a surge protector on the inside unit and said everything checked out okay.

    I just had a new Trane XR 14 HVAC installed and I noticed that during startup the condenser makes a buzzing noise for about a minute. Sounds like it's coming from the compressor. Once it runs for a minute or two the noise goes way. I was told by the installation tech that it is normal. If that normal?

    I recently mowing the lawn of a customer and found that the plastic shroud had disintegrated and that most of the pieces were laying inside the condenser unit, the piece that attached to the top of the unit was still intacted. I checked to see about getting a replacement one. No such luck, the unit was an older one. The AC service owner told me that he had seen people use chicken wire. I took zip ties and attached the chicken wire to the piece that was still whole and cut the wire to fit, bending the excess under the piece and then reattached it to the top of the unit.

    How much is similar in style and put a little bit shorter and wider a little bigger I think, also It’s much older Or a little owner or so, and plus when it runs on start up it makes a loud humming noise and then the whole thing starts to shake the housing in the guard. I think it’s because one of the blades/blds off balance like maybe not as Think of a picture or so, and what made me just hombre itself that basically one in particular is more balanced, so that causes the whole thing a shank. After that half of the apt isn’t blowing air out the vents and the other half is hardly blowing. We live in a 1000 sq ft apt. Of course maintenance man says it shouldn’t get cooler than 78 because it’s summertime. But before this happened I had it at 72 all day and night. We live in Texas. • @acservicetechchannel

      That could be many things such as too much oil at the compressor or no superheat right after startup but the scroll makes more noise upon startup and shut off than the reciprocating but is quieter while running. Is the noise getting worse? You may want to call a tech out for that one to read pressures and amps, thanks!

    I am here because my 410A compressor rattles or chatters on shut down. Guess it a scroll compressor.

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, scrolls can sometimes experience a rattle at shutdown. It's caused by high pressure refrigerant changing direction and stopping the rotating scrolls and spinning them backwards once the motor is de-energized and no longer forcing them to spin. The sound itself is not harmful. It is more pronounced on 410A scrolls because of the higher operating pressures, and it's more pronounced on long line set installs or high line rise installs. Many scroll compressors have a check valve built in to stop this noise, but it seems like some either don't have one or it doesn't work perfectly. If it really drives you insane, you can have a new external liquid line check valve installed by a tech just off the compressor discharge port. The tech would need to recover all of the refrigerant out of the system, cut the discharge line open, braze the check valve in place, nitrogen fill and leak check the system, vacuum it all down, and recharge with refrigerant to proper pressures and temperatures. The alternative to doing that is installing a compressor blanket to muffle the rattle. As long as the compressor is quiet when running, it is likely undamaged and still perfectly intact. Scrolls make some noise when starting and stopping but they are quieter than piston compressors while actually running.

      The noise may be a lack of lubrication at the compressor and it running in vacuum if it is that low. Mkae sure tpo shut it off and search for the leak, thanks

      Won't be low unless there is a leak to fix

    My AC sounds like a blue whale when it shuts off... It's loud.
    Thoughts?

      Is it a scroll or reciprocating compressor? A scroll is quieter while running but much louder during shut down, thanks!

      Yeah sorry, that was one of the early videos and i try to not do that any more. I used to use that as a visual cue when I was looking around the room to get eye contact and head bobs with my students in the classroom. A hard to break habit. I don't believe I am doing that now on present videos, thanks for letting me know!
