    I worked in PR at the hotel from 1984 to 1987 which included Expo 86. There was major renovations going on to bring it back to its original splendour. Hilton had modernized it in the 70s. They were making Floor 9 a hotel within a hotel with its own concierge 24/7. Anyway they were about to furnish the 9th floor with antique furniture when one of the housekeepers, who had been there since the 40s, told the General Manager that Hilton had stored all the Chippendale furniture on the 17th floor. Basically the attic. So there it was, all the original furniture in pristine condition, which went into all the rooms on the 9th floor. Just a little bit of trivia.

    Great review once again on these historic hotels. I know you mentioned high tea, and the fairmont empress in Victoria has high tea time. Which I , for the first time, visited back in summer of 2015. All the many times I visited Victoria, never did experience that leisurely luncheon. That hotel has a great location, and also worth the visit. However I have yet to stay there, for a night. But the butchart gardens, which I returned to in Nov.2017, was also a unique experience as it was all dressed up, with Christmas lights etc, and I also enjoyed high tea there as well. Rather enjoyable experience as very few visitors at the time. And I went up to my birth home of Comox, and got a chance to see that city dressed in fresh snow. Also very unique experience .
    But I will say, although I no longer live in Canada, the fed govt should view how very important rail service is in Europe, and follow their mindset. So very sad, to see how not only has rail service gone from Canada, but also bus service in most of the western provinces. Such a tragedy.

    I remember the ugly signs above the Hotel Vancouver and the Sun Tower. Happy they're gone.
    Among the many movies filmed at the hotel is "Kosigan Is Coming". Thrilling scenes of a scramble for life across the iconic copper roof.
    The removal of 1960's ceilings in the lobby was great, the new brass chandeliers were beautiful.
    More recently, the lobby was turned into shops, the desk moved to the rear of the hotel. You no longer have an impressive entry off Georgia Street. The decor is fine, but not in keeping with the era in which the hotel was built.

    • @kenneth7027

      And such a shame the famed "Panarama Roof" supper club was closed.
      Dal Richards and his orchestra were broadcast across Canada for years. Many famous guests dined and danced there.

    • @trav4oilers
      @trav4oilers  Před 17 dny

      I really wish it had the railway hotel essence. I was told recently they wanted to re-open the super club but the roof wouldn't support the weight. Did you see the other episodes in my series on the grand railway hotels? It's all about the railway history of canada and cities it built just like this one, I'd love to hear what you think )

    • @kenneth7027
      @kenneth7027 Před 17 dny

      @@trav4oilers I recently went up to the roof , a very nondescript restaurant was there, I assumed it opened later in the day. Roy Rogers and Trigger were guests.
      I think I can remember the copper roof turning green in my youth. I believe it has now been painted this colour.
      Since this third Hotel Vancouver was built, it has had little to do with the railroad.
      I read that a dismayed housekeeper hid some antique furniture during a remodel.
      Much original artwork was covered up or destroyed.
      We have lunch at the Chateau Lake Louise, spectacular building and scenery!
      A cousin once worked on the desk at the Royal York, Toronto.
      Will watch your other interesting videos.
