That Zelda music is engrained in my soul! I haven't played the game since the early 90's, but when you opened with the music at number 2, wow! It brought me back to a place I totally forgot about, good stuff.

Mario 3 was my nemesis till January this year! When I did it I was so shocked I didn't know how to feel, my son asked me if I was alright. I first played this when it came out so it has taken me a while. I can't be the only one who got stuck on world 8? it's as hard as concrete coconuts. Especially if you haven't harvested loads of lives and power ups in previous levels. Great vid mate.
Battletoads had amazingly designed gameplay and such smooth animation for NES. The variety of perspectives was so creative. There's even a boss that you fight from the boss' first person perspective - very clever game. I'm glad it's on this list.
Rad list as always. You really had me on the edge of my seat by the end when I didn't see SMB3 come up. I had to keep second guessing myself; 'is he not gonna put it there because he mentioned Mario already?' Anyway, I couldn't agree more since these were all games I played while growing up.

Totally agree... I'm ok with this list but I think duck hunt should be taken out completely , Super Mario bros put in its place and Tysons Punch out should be put in Super Marios bros spot...
A really solid list. It reminds me that I'm missing a couple of them. SMB3. Rygar could've made it, if it had a save or password system. I might've replaced Duck Hunt with Excitebike or Ice Climber. Duck Hunt was fun for a while, but ultimately, too repetitive.
The NES was a great system with some fantastic games it was amazing what the programmers got out of that system they really did push it as far as it could go

I actually think SMB2, Little Nemo and Bubble Bobble deserves some places too, but I don't know where. There were also some epic Disney/Capcom games (hint: ducks and chipmunks). I guess I had a big crush on "cute" games those days, maybe I would need a Top 15 list or something.
To this day, I still play all these games on my original NES. Except for duck hunt. I have Duck Hunt, but I would probably exchange that one on the list for Blaster Master, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT 2, or Mike Tyson's Punch-out.

Well...it kind of is, and that's because its quite flawed. I mean it's fun as hell tearing through the game with overpowered metal blades, but let's face it. Mega Man 2 is a little overrated. I personally find Mega Man 9 to be the best 8 bit Mega Man. And if we're sticking to NES only, then I'd pick Mega Man 3.
I really enjoyed your retro NES top 10 games list. I'm a big RPG gamer so I have to admit I clearly have some bias but I would've mentioned all of the Dragon Warrior series games that were released on the original NES 1-4. Also, The Guardian Legend & Blaster Mater were some timeless NES Games that will never be matched. I played through all of these games as a teenager and they were all excellent.
Honestly dude Excitebike didn't age well at all. I replayed it a few years ago and I was huge fan of it when it first came out. I really wish I would have left it in the 80's because it's really just not that good of a game anymore. Punch Out definitely still holds up though.
I'll likely be doing this for most of my future videos; structuring a script around 5/10 dot points (with notes under them) instead of a wall of text is *SO* much easier to manage.

some of my best childhood memories involve these games, especially Contra. We would all meet up before school early as fuck and try to beat Contra in the hour or so we had before we to get peddaling. Great times
Played them all except Final Fantasy. And while these games stick out the most imo some were better even though less known. Games such as : - Adventure Island series - Riki Kunio Kun Nekketsu series ( seriously Goal 3, Dunk Heroes owned so much ) - Felix The Cat ( Hudson version ) But i guess the list is different for everybody. One thing is for sure, NES had fantastic games and no matter how much time passes they will have a charm that can never be matched. I enjoyed this video,thanks for sharing your list as well.
Good list but can't agree with the Duck Hunt on the list. Just because it had gun addition for gameplay and it was bundled in many NES system releases doesn't mean it should be within the top ten. In fact it should have been disqualified for that since it would have been a forgotten game if it weren't for becoming famous for having been bundled with the system. I would have chosen or agreed with Tetris, pac man, the original donkey kong or dk jr and Mario bros arcade classic over duck hunt. Even qix, tmnt, metal gear, bionic commando, bomber man, chip n dales, kid Icarus, double dragon, punchout, kirby or duck tales had more sales and fame as a stand alone game then duck hunt and its fame had. I would have chosen Mario bros 2, heck even Dr. Mario over duck hunt.

+UltraMc _ No effort you say? Much more effort was put into SMB2 USA than Lost Levels, which Miyamoto didn't even have a hand in. It's Miyamoto's, not some random game in Japan. And they added a new boss and some other new features for the SMB2 USA release. That alone took more effort than simply releasing Lost Levels.
I'd played Contra almost everyday when I was a little, and Twin Bee also one of my favorite. But, I always playing game on Ding Dong or Arcade Center, because I'm not a console guy...

It is more non-linear due to the starting order possibilities. Visuals are also more vibrant and colorful. And finally... the Wily stages have a build-up. Talking difficulty here, as it gradually increases. It is debatable which has the superior soundtrack, but I tend to lean more towards MM3's. Definitely more emotionally impactful!
You can shoot the dog in Duck Hunt if you're playing the arcade version. Only in the bonus round, which doesn't exist in the NES version, can you shoot the dog, but especially in the years that have passed since the dog first started laughing at us it's freaking hysterical when it's done.
Something no one cares about but the first enemy to kill me in Mario wasn't a gomba; it was a koopa shell. I was not expecting that little bleepin bleep to come back for revenge.
Xmas 1991 got NES Super Mario bros 3 console package. Best xmas ever once I started playing I fell in love with gaming. Also got Zelda gold cartridge as xmas gift never got a look for months that's how good SMB3 is.
My favorite NES Games : Battle City, Best of the Best, Gun Smoke, Bomberman, Galaxian, Ice Climber, Baloon Fight, Super Contra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3, Aladdin.
MGM SPORTS The game makes you back track to other levels. Levels 1, kill boss, get crusher upgrade to tank, there is a creature's head in a wall that shoots at you. Use crusher on him and advance to level 2. Find the next boss, kill him, get hyper, this let's you blow up certain walls to advance to level 3, Find boss, kill him, get Hover upgrade. Backtrack to the very start of the game and hover up to the top, branch by branch, this takes you to level 4, find boss, kill boss, get key. Unlock door to advance to level 5. Level 4 is a pattern maze that you have to know to get to the boss. I'll let you figure out the rest. Just remember, full gunpower is your friend! Also for bosses 2,4,6 you can lob a grenade at the mouth of each boss then pause the game while the grenade is touching the mouth, it will still kill the boss after 8 seconds, then unpause. That's all I'll say. :) You can figure the rest. Have fun with that game, it's a blast!
Yeah. I kinda found out what to do in that game after I replayed it. I eventually figured out progression, but it took a while. I didn't know about the boss grenade trick until I got an issue of Nintendo Power. Didn't have Internet back then too heh.
Well you can kind of save in SMB3 but it will automatically save after each level but like Danger Dolan said that the remade version of SMB3 you save anytime you want! (including virtual console on the 3ds)

Getting the original is the easy part. Getting the best games for a low price is another. But you can save a lot of money when you just buy the cartridges.
In SMB 3 most people think that the leaf gives you the Tanooki suit but it doesn’t it just gives you the regular raccoon suite the one major difference between the two suites is that the regular raccoon suite that you get from the leaf you cannot temporarily turn to stone like you can with the Tanooki suite

Personally, I love Duck Hunt. But mainly because it's a classic, and it shared the same cartridge with Mario. In a nutshell, neither one of them are as awesome as Contra, but I moved it a spot higher on my personal list because they were classics. I'm okay with your opinion on it, because I mainly play it occasionally.
Who knew the impact that Final Fantasy would have on future games..even today and even some FB games like AVENGERS ALLIANCE use the FF formula of using turns to attack people.

Blaster Master is kick ass, except you have to beat it all in one sitting and make a map. The remake Blaster Master Zero fixes all of these problems.

You know doki doki panic was only released in Japan on famicom so its technically not an NES game unless you mean super mario bros. 2

some of my best childhood memories involve these games, especially Contra. We would all meet up before school early as fuck and try to beat Contra in the hour or so we had before we to get peddaling. Great times
Played them all except Final Fantasy. And while these games stick out the most imo some were better even though less known. Games such as :
- Adventure Island series
- Riki Kunio Kun Nekketsu series ( seriously Goal 3, Dunk Heroes owned so much )
- Felix The Cat ( Hudson version )
But i guess the list is different for everybody. One thing is for sure, NES had fantastic games and no matter how much time passes they will have a charm that can never be matched. I enjoyed this video,thanks for sharing your list as well.

Good list but can't agree with the Duck Hunt on the list. Just because it had gun addition for gameplay and it was bundled in many NES system releases doesn't mean it should be within the top ten. In fact it should have been disqualified for that since it would have been a forgotten game if it weren't for becoming famous for having been bundled with the system. I would have chosen or agreed with Tetris, pac man, the original donkey kong or dk jr and Mario bros arcade classic over duck hunt. Even qix, tmnt, metal gear, bionic commando, bomber man, chip n dales, kid Icarus, double dragon, punchout, kirby or duck tales had more sales and fame as a stand alone game then duck hunt and its fame had. I would have chosen Mario bros 2, heck even Dr. Mario over duck hunt.
evilspin You make a very good point Sir. Although it was funny to see your friend or sister miss the one duck on higher speeds because you could secretly controlled it though.
Finally someone who appreciates Battle toads. I don't know if you played it but World Cup was also awesome at the time.

+UltraMc _ No effort you say? Much more effort was put into SMB2 USA than Lost Levels, which Miyamoto didn't even have a hand in. It's Miyamoto's, not some random game in Japan. And they added a new boss and some other new features for the SMB2 USA release. That alone took more effort than simply releasing Lost Levels.

When I finally figured out the entrance to Area 4, I was happier than when I beat Mike Tyson for the 1st time.
I'd played Contra almost everyday when I was a little, and Twin Bee also one of my favorite. But, I always playing game on Ding Dong or Arcade Center, because I'm not a console guy...

It is more non-linear due to the starting order possibilities. Visuals are also more vibrant and colorful. And finally... the Wily stages have a build-up. Talking difficulty here, as it gradually increases. It is debatable which has the superior soundtrack, but I tend to lean more towards MM3's. Definitely more emotionally impactful!

You can shoot the dog in Duck Hunt if you're playing the arcade version. Only in the bonus round, which doesn't exist in the NES version, can you shoot the dog, but especially in the years that have passed since the dog first started laughing at us it's freaking hysterical when it's done.
Gotta love those kids who think they know everything about the classics yet get their snes and nes mixed up.

When I was a kid, Chuck E. Cheese had a GIANT screen on which we could play shooting games not unlike Duck Hunt. It was so freaking fun.

Something no one cares about but the first enemy to kill me in Mario wasn't a gomba; it was a koopa shell. I was not expecting that little bleepin bleep to come back for revenge.
Xmas 1991 got NES Super Mario bros 3 console package. Best xmas ever once I started playing I fell in love with gaming. Also got Zelda gold cartridge as xmas gift never got a look for months that's how good SMB3 is.

I think I've replayed Blaster Master like 20 times lol. Totally not boring to me. Never played Secret Castle, no Idea there.
Blaster Master irritated the HELL out of me. Good game, but extremely frustrating!
Knowing the level 2,4 & 6 boss grenade trick helps immensely! Also don't take on level 5 crab boss w/o full gun-power. Full gun-power is your friend!
MGM SPORTS The game makes you back track to other levels. Levels 1, kill boss, get crusher upgrade to tank, there is a creature's head in a wall that shoots at you. Use crusher on him and advance to level 2. Find the next boss, kill him, get hyper, this let's you blow up certain walls to advance to level 3, Find boss, kill him, get Hover upgrade. Backtrack to the very start of the game and hover up to the top, branch by branch, this takes you to level 4, find boss, kill boss, get key. Unlock door to advance to level 5. Level 4 is a pattern maze that you have to know to get to the boss. I'll let you figure out the rest. Just remember, full gunpower is your friend! Also for bosses 2,4,6 you can lob a grenade at the mouth of each boss then pause the game while the grenade is touching the mouth, it will still kill the boss after 8 seconds, then unpause. That's all I'll say. :) You can figure the rest. Have fun with that game, it's a blast!
Yeah. I kinda found out what to do in that game after I replayed it. I eventually figured out progression, but it took a while. I didn't know about the boss grenade trick until I got an issue of Nintendo Power. Didn't have Internet back then too heh.
Well you can kind of save in SMB3 but it will automatically save after each level but like Danger Dolan said that the remade version of SMB3 you save anytime you want! (including virtual console on the 3ds)
I am very satisfied with this list. It's probably the best "Top 10" I've seen in a while. Good job! I feel like "Kirby's Adventure" should have been here, though... I don't know. Maybe that's just me...

The NES Classic is worth it if you can find it for under $100. Otherwise, I would just buy the original.
Getting the original is the easy part. Getting the best games for a low price is another. But you can save a lot of money when you just buy the cartridges.

In SMB 3 most people think that the leaf gives you the Tanooki suit but it doesn’t it just gives you the regular raccoon suite the one major difference between the two suites is that the regular raccoon suite that you get from the leaf you cannot temporarily turn to stone like you can with the Tanooki suite

Personally, I love Duck Hunt. But mainly because it's a classic, and it shared the same cartridge with Mario. In a nutshell, neither one of them are as awesome as Contra, but I moved it a spot higher on my personal list because they were classics. I'm okay with your opinion on it, because I mainly play it occasionally.

Who knew the impact that Final Fantasy would have on future games..even today and even some FB games like AVENGERS ALLIANCE use the FF formula of using turns to attack people.
