As a huge Muse fan, this was a special treat. The bassline to Hysteria is already hard enough, and you play it with one hand and play the singing melody with the other, not to mention arpeggios and everything else. Dude... Crazy!
I ❤ Hysteria!
Muse rocks.
Charlie is one of the best of the best.
This was done 7 years ago czcams.com/video/q7TXYtDw5s4/video.html
Yup. Have seen them live, was the craziest experience of my life, and this would definitely would be just as sick to witness.
Damn, he pulled the glowing bass+ glowing strings combo!
When you do a Muse video you've gotta go all out 🔥
@@CharlesBerthoud How long are these string glowing?
That bass was too damn sick haha
@@halidox As long as they're under blacklights? That's not a chemical reaction, it's just something like nylon strings with a fluorescent ingredient so they glow under UV lights.
@@halidox never trust someone wearing a kippa
The coordination of this man is insane
Just needs to work on his timing. He played for 62 seconds
That's not like that's how he makes a living. Guess contributing to society is hard nowadays. @@J0Ecorreia
he studied that and passed the tests i guess ^^
I honestly think he's had that surgical procedure where they split the brain into two halves (corpus callosotomy, look it up). The left brain is working the left hand and the right brain is working the right hand. That's the only way I can see how he could possibly be that coordinated lol.
you can make a minecraft world out of this man coordinations
I’m a guitarist who’s been playing bass for my church band since they lost their bassist. I’m loving it. I’m getting farther from just a guitarist playing on bass and closer to sounding like a bassist. I am loving your channel sir
There is something very fun and freeing about bass.
@@mikeg3439 it's a very unique fish, and they fight really hard!
@@mikeg3439 very true
Went through the same thing the past few years
May God bless your band
You have created the ultimate level of bass master to this point. But knowing you Charles, you'll set the bar even higher and higher throughout the years to come.
Decision, comment overturned
Question is... When will Charles be better than Victor Wooten? There, I said it.
To be honest I'm really excited to see how his musical style progresses 15 years from now.
He has some sic skills with the bass but I don't think he could ever play in a band like that. Repeating the same stuff every night, he would get bored big time!
@@McMullet97 He has been for some time now. It's okay. ❤🔥
How is this possible?! 😭 you're so good this is insane!!
Thanks!
@@CharlesBerthoud Nice duke nukem 3d cover.
man i was proud of myself for playing hysteria
i like when he stops playing hysteria and just makes muse noises
I have so much admiration for musicians like this guy ! WOW !
And I thought being able to play just the bass line was difficult enough
Well played sir
Literally well played 👌🏻
😅😅 true
It isn't though? Is just a bunch of hammer ons and pull offs hard for bassists?
@@JohnDoe_69 There actually aren't any pull offs and the few hammer ons aren't the main problem either. It's mostly about speed, technique and consistency in the right hand. And yeah it isn't extremely hard, but it definitely isn't easy.
@@JohnDoe_69 I was just making a small joke on how it's a relatively fast bass line and it is one of my favourite songs
Muse must be Amused

i need like a full song of this charles. You made HYsteria sound so cool and it was already an epic song
As a big Muse fan who also knows nothing about how to play a guitar, I have no idea how and what you're doing but it looks absolutely insane and my mind is blown.
And everything done on a bass makes it even more epic
Same, but I know some guitar and bass, it is as awesome as it seems and then some. Not only for the composition, but for the execution. good stuff
Not a guitar
@@apollo1694 I thought bass was a kind of guitar?
@@spaghetti4659 not exactly
This is phenomenal as the baseline rhythm and timing are so different to the melody and the vocal parts. It's as though Charles has 2 separate brains controlling each hand! Crazy....
Gee there a lot of low lifes around. I know times are tough for a lot of people but trying to scamming people of their hard earned cash shows total disregard and disrespect for humanity. I wonder if those sort of people have an genuine friends...
He did start with piano as his firat instrument as a kid
Absolute master
get your corpus callosum cut and maybe you can do it too!
Not to downplay this at all, I certainly couldn’t do it, but I did learn to play the bassline and sing this (which I consider one of my proudest accomplishment). Anyways, I learned that because the bassline is played completely straight with 16th notes the other melody is actually pretty easy to fit in, once you learn the pattern of where your left hand has to be for the bassline you can pretty much turn your brain off for that part since it’s so rhythmically simple. Once again not downplaying it, just explaining how this is even possible to accomplish in the first place.
No way to explain that ridiculous arpeggio though, that was some dark magic shit
We, muse fans, need a 15-minute video of Muse's all discography on bass. Thank you.
That’s gonna take a lot longer than 15 minutes
Amen
Do a medley
How did this one-bass cover of the whole song sound more Muse than the real version. Just EPIC.
BASS GRANDMASTER! Huge respect - especially for all the effort and work you put into it to reach this level! Must have been a painfull road. Well done!
Holy Cow, that was so freaking sick. You playing the melody while tapping the bass line was unreal. That made my day, thank you!

Not simultaneously though
@@joethelion6016 uh, maybe go watch it again
Thanks so much!
as impressive as this is, after watching all of Charles' videos, you can kinda feel that this is actually an "easy" song for him.
Yeah, that looked real "easy"🙄
It's true haha. His other songs are way more difficult.😅
I'm not so sure about that. There's moments in this video where he definitely tops himself here.
Hysteria i'ts not complicated. Hysteria By Charles Berthoud it's another history
@@smack_dab agreed. the tapping in the chorus particularly is absolutely unreal! playing the syncopated bass and guitar parts together in the verse is trickier than it looks at first blush, too.
Everything in this video is so perfect!😍🔥
This is insane. And the fact that you look so relaxed when playing this is also insane.
I freaking love that bass of yours! Absolutely stunning as always.
Thanks! I love it too 🔥
I first watched this by listening to it. I assumed he played those upper parts in another take. The fact that he's tapping the whole Hysteria bassline is fucking insane
Same. I was completely fooled the first time, and then completely mesmerized the second time.
Also from 0:40 to 0;50? I can’t get that part. Looks like I don’t see what I hear but maybe he’s too fast or I can’t see enough. Would someone explain?
@@cesarerossi2614, I want to help, but I'm not sure I understand what explanation you're looking for 🤔
I am also confused by that part. If we mean the same thing then it's about the chords that he makes, at first at 00:40 by strumming and then, somehow, in another way while producing the same sound effect
You're getting to close to the truth. 🤐
My mind is officially blown. I've tried to play that bass riff for years and have never truly mastered it. Yet here you are with one hand? Bravo, sir!
That is some MAD fret work, Charles!! Keep it going!!!
Thanks, Charles! Always phenomenal talent, but this time he added some special visuals with those strings and fret lights!
I've been fortunate enough to have been exposed to the artistry & amazing technical prowess of great bassists from every genre all over the world & at 62 years of age, I'm so pleased to see that folks like you are continuing to be such an inspiration to others as well as raising the bar & teaching others to do the same, fills me with that same spirit that music provided to me when I was a child (& I needed it, believe me.)
Thanks for your hard work & dedication to your craft, it shows. 🤟❗
P.S. I just accidentally gave myself a thumbs-up & can't undo it, sorry, my bad. 😬
You are too sweet for this world. I gave you a thumbs-up too! I'm glad we can all share Charles' amazing talent and dedication.
You deserve that thumbs up!
Added another thumb up for ya!
What other epic bassists would you recommend?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
WOW, you are an absolute animal. I can't even wrap my head around this one. Masterful work, Charles, as always!
This is GREAT Charles! The arrangement is fantastic and your playing and musicianship is inspiring and mesmerizing. I really dig the beautiful visual aspect of this too, neon strings, lit up fingerboard and wonderful lighting. This is another favorite!
Charles IS Muse, on his own. Guy's a hard working bass playing genius.
He needs to play the drums with his feet too now 🥁🦶🏻
just impressive and nice to watch how much fun you are having with it, makes me want to pick up my bass again after years
Bro, i've been listening to this song for almost 15 years now and you literally blew my mind off in a minute. What the heck was that..... ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
One of the best I've ever heard!!!! Why aren't you in a band or touring solo? I would happily pay to see a performance over and over!! Left me speechless and smiling... keep doing your thing!!
The bassline it self was a challenge to learn for me, but this is unreal. Great job!!🙌🏻👏🏻
I still can't play it quite fast enough :(
@@MegaLarriot I get you haha, practice with the bpm you can follow and then slowly increase it. You'll master it💪🏻🔥
Im 47yo and never really played an instrument other than messing around with a guitar in my teens. This video inspired me to get a bass and start playing. Truly mind bending musicianship and a true inspiration. Thanks Charles!
I don't think I ever heard and seen anything better on bass. You make impossibile real and cool!
Simply an human machine. What makes Charles great it's not only the technique but the infinite taste choosing every single note.
This was powerful! You've elevated a great baseline into another level. What was that melody? Wow!! Cheers!!!
Hysteria by Muse
absolutely nailed that bass tone as well
You are an absolute beast! You inspire me to practice and get better with every video you post, thank you and keep up the amazing content!
Covering this famous song made me realize how impressive the rest of your stuff is. My jaw dropped when you started playing the melody over that tricky bass line. And then I remembered that's what you do for most of your compositions... Bravo sir!
The ability to let the notes ring out on the lead while tapping out the rhythm is insane.
I'd love to hear how this all sounds raw.
I think what we hear is version where he records rythm and lead separately because there is no distortion when he is playing two notes at the same time. Of course no doubt he can play both parts at the same time he just did this so it sounds cleaner and the lead doesnt get distorted.
@@yepespp1664 I think you are right. The distortion sounds/tone sounds a bit different for the bass/lead parts and you can see at places like 0:38-0:39 he releases the melody note in the video a long time before the sound ends to do the strumming bit (that tapped note wouldn't ring like that afther being released). I don't doubt that he can do all the bits as obviously he can do it on camera but there is definitely a bit of a multitracking/editing going on.
Glad you're finally starting to get the recognition on CZcams that you deserve as CZcams's premier bass player!
Nothing can be said about how tremendous the musicianship was, it's just frightening! That tone though, gnarly!
yer just plain insane dude, love it all, stay well
Charles reminds me of Steve Vai. Steve Vai's solos and playing are out of this world. So is Charles. I'd love to hear both of them playing together.
That would be actually and properly cool.
that would be cool but i bet that they would just get in each others way
@@jamesha175 Good point
Great to have this video just when they've won the EMA's for best Rock. I'm always happy when i see my favourite band get the attention they deserve.

We need more creative bass playing like this in rock music, sounds epic!
Wow. Good job. Neon strings add effect. Thank you for your work. I love the bass guitar, and I constantly watch your videos.
Muse is my favorite band and a big reason I play bass, this was awesome, thanks Charles!
I saw them just a few months ago and it changed my perspective on them. Amazing show, and still amazing live
Wow! Realy nice tune! Thanks!
neon aesthetic looks very sick❗️
This man plays the bassline better with one hand than I can with two! That's years of hard work showing for sure!!
Very nice as always
Wow, just wow. I don't know how this is even possible. Just amazing
We all need a full version of this song.
The backing tracks to these songs are actually part of the virtuosity. You definitely "helped" that tapping section with the backing track parts, which is something I actually love about you. As a composer, pianist, bass player, and producer, you are one of my favourite people because it gives me hope for myself ;P
You're aware he didn't compose this?
Mate, you are SO hard working. I play your stuff to my niece as an example of what practice can do for you :-)
Brutal !!! Stunning!!! What a coordination !!!
I can't believe what I just saw with my own 2 crossed-eyes....you're playing is super-naturally awesome! this was my first time hearing this song, and I thought it was really cool. Thanks for sharing.....the time spent learning to play bass guitar has really paid off...Excellent chops to go with an outstanding song and electrifying bass guitar!✌👽🎵🎶
Love Muse. Clicked on the video expecting another Hysteria bass cover. Expectations exceeded. Mind blown.
Just incredible!
Well, that just felt, looked and sounded fantastic! Well played
Just gonna ask for covering this and you already did it you are a wizard charles 😂
"Just play this!" in the description 😂 I'd love to but for some reason I really cannot 😅😛Your playing is out of this world, thank you!
Beyond the undeniable skill and talent, that bass looks so damn gorgeous !!
It's such a beautiful instrument.
Beautiful tabs, like that bass
ITS FUN TO WATCH YOU PLAY. THANKS.
Charles just casually showing us why his name deserves to be mentioned next to ones like Pastorius, Wooten, and Myung
As if it weren't already an impossible task to try to emulate your talent on bass, my 4 year old just told me he wanted me to get a "light up bass" like yours 😂
That is incredibly well played and utterly tight!
!!!!!!!!! that was the most amazing bass thing I've seen in years!
That was totally awesome 😲😲👏👏
This guy is so good he can play bass part, melody part and drums with 2 hands on 1 bass
Amazing skills and incredible instrument!❤
this was genuinely incredible...
besides the tapping part in the chorus
Amazing! I always wanted to hear how you would voice the lead vocal and guitar parts while playing the bassline of this awesome song... now I finally know! 👀
I hear seeing Muse live is an experience. One day!
I've seen them a couple of times, definitely recommend it! Even if someone didn't like the music the visuals alone are enough entertainment

Hysteria is already a pretty hard to master, but you just made it like 10 more harder :D You are already on the run to being perhaps one of the best bassists in the world right now.
I'll never know if I get emotional watching his videos knowing that he can, or knowing I may never be able to do this myself. Masterclass. Every. Time.

I can relate to this comment. I've felt it watching many CZcams Bassist virtuosos. I think it's a combination of shear awe vs the blunt reality that this level of skill my not be attainable. It's always so fun to watch though.
😂 I always start watching and think...buy a bass James
By the end I think
...don't bother...
Until I watch another
Love this song!
this is insane man!!!
You are such an amazing bassist. The way you tap those arpeggios reminds me of John Myung from Dream Theater. You should do one of these for a dream theater song or medley lol 🤘🏼
