Prior to Essen 1999, a group of students created Splotter Spellen to sell some of their own game designs. This game is regarded as one of the highlights of that group. The object of the game is to deliver as many people to their destinations as you can. To accomplish this, players place route markers on the board to connect passengers to their destinations. However, the destination types (work, bar, home) vary from turn to turn, so you can follow certain passengers as they make their way through the daily grind.
Players may buy more buses (they start off with one), build onto their bus route, bring new passengers to the city (via the trains), expand the city by adding more buildings, and run their buses. There is another option, the clock, but more on that later. The action board has one other clever feature. On some actions, route expansion and building, the first player to choose that action actually gets to execute the action last! Which leads to some interesting games of chicken and some painful decisions.
Buying more buses allows a player to carry one more passenger every time they run their buses - hence scoring, in the best case, one more point. Depending on how the city gets built, however, finding lots of passengers on the street can be tricky.
Bus routes extend from either end of a Settlers-style initial placement. Extensions are appended to either end. Routes may only run parallel if there are no empty streets at one of the ends or the line ends on the crossing as another player's end. All new passengers will arrive at one of two train stations so that is one concern when route building. One must also be careful to run by a nice mix of building types. And, when building, one must always have an eye towards spoiling other players' routes by placing a mix of building types at each of their intersection so that all of their passengers just walk! Finally, when carrying passengers, one wants to be careful to set up to carry the same passenger next turn.

You made me want to play this so much that I'm making a copy myself.
@@dodong_daniel don't miss the reprint coming out next month!!
In The Netherlands (home to the designers and artist of the game) we've had yellow busses that did regional transportation. Although this was far a longer time ago then the year of 1998, but in the 90's some of these might still have been around. But looking at the design of the specific bus (see original cover) I think they were inspired by the American high school bus.
I love it when you tell us a story about you and your games. This was a great watch and a great review. Quack!
Bus rules! Love Splotter, have most of their big games and honestly they changed how I engaged with the hobby. GOAT status publisher/designer
Yess, was waiting for this review. Such a nice game, on the same level as hansa teutonica but easy to teach and a friendlier theme
I have friends that are shocked Carcassonne beat out every other game for #1 for 2 years in a row. But Carcassonne does so much with so little that it's honestly a game I never really tire of
Ty for showing bus and reinvigorating this video series!
I thought this looked like a light game until I found out it was from Splotter, looks can be deceiving indeed
I went and did a massively deep dive looking for this one when your first gameplay came out. I found a small shop in one of the Dakotas that had a website and were selling it at a pretty great price point. It was the first copy of the game I’d been able to find. I consider the not insignificant amount of time trying to find it a great investment. I love this game!
In iceland the all bus are yellow
A reprint has just been announced. I'm so looking forward to this.
Have you played Get on Board (or its early version Let's Make a Bus Route)? seems like it would be a good fit for you as a bus theme roll/flip and write
I have been looking to buy a copy for a while now but was not lucky enough to find one, so I am hoping for a reprint.
I've missed this series! Doesn't look like my kind of game, but I'd be willing to give it a try at least
You can find it on eBay for about $2000 USD after you factor in the cost of shipping and import charges.
great game. I played a friends copy, but would buy it instantly if it was reprinted.
I might have track down a copy!
Find me a extra 5 :)
Based on your recommendation a few months ago I found a sealed copy of the 2019 Capstone Retail Edition (not the Anniversary edition with the original components and map but I don't care!) from a Canadian retailer at a great price. NEVER SELLING! 😂
Great video. Do you know if there are component differences between the edition with the red '20th anniversary' shield and the regular yellow box Capstone Reprint 2019
West here, I just checked my edition (not a 20th anniversary version) and it doesn't include the wooden bus token. I know Jesse also has a copy of the orginal splotter version of bus in his box but I'm not sure if that was part if the 20th anniversary edition of not. But I can confirm, the wooden bus token is definitely not part if the regular edition from capstone.
Action programing may be my favorite game mechanic.
I’ve been looking for this game. I even checked at Gen Con. No luck
Love seeing videos on games that aren't the newest/hottest/fomo!
I noticed that the house, pub and work tokens have been replaced with wooden ones (they are cardboard in my version). Anyone have any idea where I could pick up those tokens?
Maybe etsy?
If I'm not mistaken, Keydom was the first WP game and Bus is the second. Man, I love this game...
Dart bus in Dallas Texas is Yellow.
Where do I get this game?
It is unfortunately out of print and extremely hard to find. West recently snagged a copy off ebay for around $100 with shipping.
Jessie it’s a bus
Thank you for sharing.
If you don't mind another sharing:
Who taught you to talk so well?
You and Alex, are both really excellent smooth "talkers"...
Did you born with this gift?
Or did you practice quite a lot to be a master of this skill?
(..I ask seriously..)
Wish this game only cost $30-40. I'd buy it all day long
It's a great game if you find it somewhere
So is this a TRUE #1, or is KDM still #0
Quite a bummer you keep talking about this game and I can't fin it anywhere that would ship to New Zealand.
Review of a game I will never get my hands on. ;-;
Videos like this might sway a publisher to reprint...
Had one mildly meh experience with this one. And the pricetag would keep me away anyway.
Ooooh a Patreon or secret video, thats why there is a luscious amount of hair 😜 like you better with hair, on your head that is 😜
If this game is so fabulous, why the company have not printed it again? It doesn’t look that great. If it is such a wonderful game why other reviewers don’t talk much about it? Maybe it just resonate with some gamers.
No game that is out of print and costs over $200 on eBay is worth it for anyone. Period. What a waste of a video showing off a game that’s nearly impossible to find, and insanely expensive for anyone during a recession.
quoting vasel rule, if an out of print game is so good, it will be reprinted eventually. If it is not then it is not that great. you are not missing anything.
why is it a waste of a video? who forced you to watch it? if you want it, you can PnP it or pickup a copy on the secondary market (i found one a few weeks ago for $120USD). The only way games like this will be reprinted is exactly if people like jesse make videos about them. if there is enough interest, the game will be reprinted eventually. But there will be no interest if no one's talking about it.
He’s talking about his favourite game, so what? And what if someone wants to buy it and can’t find any gameplay videos or just wants to see more Splotter game videos? It’s not a waste at all.
This is where I get frustrated. I don't subscribe to your channel to watch you indulge in games you own and love yet are unavailable. I subscribe because I'm looking for recommendations from experienced players that may help me cut through the vast options available. I hope disliking this video doesn't mess up your algorithm or damage your income string but instead gives you feedback on the kind of content I hope you will focus on.
