  • How to make a large floral spray design on stand featuring red roses and blue delphiniums
    Ingredients - red Naomi roses, blue delphinium, clove red standard carnations, aspidistra, Phoenix palm, eucalyptus, cypresses greenery.
    Two wet foam blocks and a double tray
    Easel / stand
    A spray design is such a useful design to know - it can be large or small, for event work or for sympathy work, and placing it on a stand really increases its visual impact.
    The other way to create impact is through colour - and this choice of blue and red really works! Keeping a colour choice to just two colours is very powerful - what colours would you combine? Let us know in the comments!

    I live in the states and in my shop I design standing easels each week, depending on how may funeral services there are in my area, they are very popular for the family to buy one for their loved one who has passed away, as well as a casket spray and also a sitting spray in a pot, the easels range in price between $125-$300 usually and are made in caged oasis hooked and wired to a metal easel in my area it’s not common to take them off the stand once at the gravesite they just stand, helpful hint when I’m arranging I just simply put an empty bucket underneath on the ground under the arrangement to catch all the water once the flowers are in there is no leaking the flowers start to take the water in. Your design is beautiful I use this color combination often thanks for sharing your amazing talents!

    Beautiful design, John. Since I'm no longer in the business, I haven't a clue as to how popular these are today - however, at one time they were very much so. Unfortunately, many of these would be finished off with a huge bow directly in the center of the design which, to my eye, ruined things. I would always attempt to talk folks out of the bow (to which a card was often pinned). In any instance I agree that for impact there is nothing like a standing arrangement. Bravo!

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! These sprays are popular here but not normally set on a stand - but the stand really shows of the design, so it’s a good way to display the flowers.
      A bow could be nice maybe - depends on the ribbon I suppose. Personally I don’t think it needs a bow either 🌼🙋🏼‍♂️

    In the USA here. I 20 years ago I learned to wrap the foam in green tin-foil and that would reduce the dripping on the floor. Your version is much better and 3D. 20 years ago we were taught to keep the sprays flatter. Your version is amazing.

      @FlowerJoos  Před rokem +1

      Thank you so much - and that’s a good idea to wrap the foam. I would of thought cling wrap but tinfoil is also good. Never seen green tinfoil available though. 😀

      @@FlowerJoos That type of Tin-foil was made to be used for hobbies, not cooking. As a child I remember getting it at the fish store to decorate the back of my aquarium (I choose blue). Then in the 1990's I was taught to use the green color to wrap the wet Oasis in a neat pouch. Then we secured it to the easel/floral stand. We still needed a towel on the floor while creating the design.

    For standing arrangements and to stop the dripping on the floor, I've seen the bottom 1/3 or 1/2 of the floral foam container taped into a plastic bag. You can still pierce through with stems on the lower part as long as you don't continue to make holes near the very bottom.

    Very beautiful! The standing arrangements are very popular here in the U.S. for Wake/Viewing, Church and Graveside services. They’re especially popular when there is no casket for a top spray. After graveside, the arrangements are usually removed from the stand and placed on the ground. They are extremely expensive. I’m unsure if the shops “lease” the stand and it must be returned, or if it must be purchased by the customer. Most that I’ve seen have been aluminum, rather than wood. The impact of a well done arrangement is amazing.
    I have seen many with large ribbon across the middle/front of them with written messages. In my opinion, the ribbon takes away from the beauty, but that’s just me.
    Standing sprays are also used for special dedications, and Patriotic events.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! It’s really interesting how flowers are used in different areas and countries. I just used this stand as it was one I have - and it allowed me to try out creating a spray in this way. I think it really works well. In Scotland these sprays are very popular but placed on top of the coffin, and then onto the ground afterwards. But the stand really shows the flowers off well.
      It seems that people are less keen on ribbon additions - just let the flowers do the work.
      Thank you for watching and your information and experience. 🙂🙋🏼‍♂️🌼

    In Canada a standing spray is very much a traditional arrangement and we do them regularly. If it’s a memorial some time later then we don’t do these as much. Also a ribbon with lettering like FATHER is frequently done. We do also ask if the family would like to take the flowers home then we recommend in a vase. We usually do more assortment of flowers though like lilies, mums, carns, alstro and gerbs. The main greenery is usually leather instead of the palm you used. I really like your choice of fewer flower assortment and there is more movement in yours.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  Před 2 lety

      Thank you 😊 that is true - because it is different than the regular then it could have a higher price. It would depend on the stand - is it included in the design, or would the funeral director have a stand that they keep for using, or the stand is collected back from them by the florist?
      But the flower element would be priced similar to a regular spray - but at the top end for this size and content.

    Well it's a mystery then in the UK. In North America people spend a lot of money on funeral arrangements and the flowers travel from funeral home, to church, then to the family's home, cemetery or other institutions. Stands make the arrangements visible from a distance in churches, or you can use them to stand around and behind the casket in the funeral home. In the company that I worked for, it was generally said that setting floral tributes on the floor was kind of an insult. We always put them on different sized stands, tables, and pedestals. The only time they would touch the ground would be at the cemetery.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, these designs are not cheap, so the stands are a great idea. Hopefully they will become popular - I have seen more bases with metal legs now to allow them to stand upright. But for big sprays then it’s still not the norm.
      Thank you for commenting. It’s good to hear the differences and to then see which is best. I really prefer the stand! And it gives something new for customers here.

      Yes, this will drip - the best advice is to make it in advance before it is needed and let it drip - either onto a towel or into a bucket. When it stops dripping it is finished , so good to place on a better floor such as wood. If you lie it flat it doesn’t allow it to drip, so that can be a problem. Best to let it sit and then move to where it needs to be.
      Good luck on your learning journey 😀🌼🙋🏼‍♂️

    I am making an arrangement for my mother's funeral taking place next Wed. Should be 51degrees Celsius the night before and a high of 71 degrees the day of. It would be better for me to make it the night before so I'm not rushed the morning of. Where do you suggest keep it? Outside? In a cool room inside? If inside, should I spray it with cool water periodically?

      I am thinking you are meaning Fahrenheit - so about 11 degrees up to 21 degrees. If so, then you can make the night before and just place it somewhere cool over night. A mist of water after you make it and on the morning after is all it will need. It will be fine as the stems are in water.
      Sorry to hear of your loss. 😞

    This a very lovely arrangement. How long would you predict it would last, and how would one water it if it were to stay on display?

      Thank you! That’s hard to say as it depends on the ambient temperature where you are - cooler then it lasts longer, very warm and it will last less. For watering this would be fine for an event or funeral as it is made just before - but for longer display then best to lie it flat and give it a good soak every couple of days - somewhere where it can drain without damaging anything, then stand and wait for any drips to stop.

      We spray them with floral spray when finished. Watering isn’t generally done so important to use flowers that will last.

      @@kathryngalajda3553 that is a good point - flower choice is important, and some flowers just last well compared to others.

    21 Roses! Are you crazy, I would have stopped at 12. Save my roses and still make the money! The electric bill needs to be paid.

      That’s a good suggestion. The way that would be arranged is the same method - but using dry sec foam as the base maybe onto a weighted tray.
      We don’t hold a lot of artificial flowers but it might be something we can do at some point. 🌼
