    Since hearing the All Terrain Sax played via UTube, I have spent two weeks considering whether or not I can afford to purchase one for myself. Today it occurred to me that in two months time I will have reached the age of 83. It seems just a wee bit daft to wait so I ordered a Bb and it is now on its way to The Highlands of Scotland. I might just be able to charm our local Loch Ness Monster into making an appearance in time for the tourist season. Lots of folk from America hope to catch a view of Nessie.
    now on its way to

      I’ve just turned 71, and I’m awaiting the arrival of my alto in the mountains of British Columbia.
      I trust you’re enjoying your horn.

    If you really want to get deep, buy his book too along with your instrument. I found his book a remarkable journey of his life from a child to where he is now. Understanding how he gets to where he is today enriched me deeply, enhanced my music and fed my spirit. I have come to understand 'Its not about adding years to your life....Its about adding life to your years' thanks to this remarkable flute maker and the instruments he has made me so far. Thank you Erik the Flute Maker!

    I found this on Monday, researched this and all the alternatives like crazy, found one alto bamboo sax for sale second hand in my country, bought it for a good price and just got it today. @@ErikTheFlutemakerCom Because the included reed was old I got a few new synthetic ones and I'm getting good results with a 1 1/2 Monster reed by Thomann. I also got a Star Bari Soft but that one is a little bit harder than the Monster reed so I haven't used it much.
      Having fun indeed! Can't wait to use it in scenic places on my travels this summer.

    Here's my tribute to Erik & his instruments which I wrote after receiving the 'G' sax I ordered -
    My All Terrain Sax arrived today,
    despatched by Erik from U.S. of A.
    My personal project is to learn to play,
    but at age 70, I’d best not delay.
    Luckily I made sure to fully prepare
    for import duty UK Customs declare:
    twenty percent VAT is their greedy share -
    surely enough to make buyers beware?
    My motivation isn’t sound alone,
    (though I dearly love the saxophone) -
    I need to know if my lungs will condone
    the control and pressure of a reed windblown.
    Perhaps I’ve left it far too late?
    Perhaps disappointment will be my fate?
    But Erik’s sax’s sound so great
    I hope they’ll help me to aspirate.
    The sax I’ve chosen won’t play with ease
    but that hasn’t leave me fearful of wheeze.
    I know that in life there are no guarantees,
    I hope to improve health with sounds that please.
    My aims therefore are not esoteric.
    I’ll search for those tones so atmospheric
    whilst improving my breathing, ‘cos I’m no relic.
    All the above because of Fluteman Erik.
    My All Terrain Sax is gently calling.
    The future, I hope, will be enthralling.
    Some challenges, I know, will result in stalling,
    but I truly believe it will be fun exploring.
    As for what, in time, will come to be -
    I hope I’ll emerge as a true devotee,
    and in my own small way, an inductee,
    into the Fluteman Admirers’ Society.
    So thanks to, Erik - he of sax’s and flutes,
    for his humorous uploads and attributes.
    Our beliefs may differ (for me atheism suits)
    but as a harbinger of joy - the Fluteman transmutes.

    Be aware, if you live in the UK and are buying and importing one of Erik's instruments, the transport costs automatically applied are £64 and then there is an additional charge for VAT of 20% applied in this country by customs and excise - and they WILL levy that duty as a part of the process of importing with the carrier. So, in effect, allow a maximum of £100 on top of your order, depending upon which model you order. I ordered the 'G' for which the duty was 39 pounds.

    Four just about 4 months now, I've had one of Erik's superb Tenor ATS instruments.
    I'm finding it easier to play (no mean feat as I have COPD) but the one drawback that I think it has is the lack of a thumbrest. It isn't especially heavy, but neither is it lightweight and it is also quite a good size. It can become tiring after awhile - possibly I feel this more because I'm having to concentrate very much on breath control and keeping the instrument in that 'sweet spot' which suits me. I'm currently trying a few experiments to see what I can attach in the way of some sort of 'ring' around the ATS which will allow me to add a temporary thumbrest.
    Has anyone else had this problem?

      @mcr0741 Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you for the reply. I've made up my mind for the Bb, I suppose the C is a versatile scale for playing with other instrumentalists on easy chords but it doesn't really have the Jazz vibe to it. The Bb, much like a conventional saxohone, will have that jazzy soul in the Jazz culture scales and it gives that feel of a sad soulful jazz concert. The C just plays too much on scales with happy-ish vibe. :D

    These are clarinets... Not saxophones.
    The distinction is that these have a cylindrical bore, whereas saxophones have conical bores. I think this is also why saxophones have an octave key and clarinets have a register key which raises the note by a 12th.

    Yet I could not help but notice that your saxophones still use "industrially-made" mouthpieces and I wonder why.
    I imagine a saxophone/clarinet style mouthpiece is a difficult thing to make due to a high level of precision it seems to require.
    Do you know how to make such a mouthpiece with handheld, traditional non-powered tools ?

      Hi Sam
      If I had to make my own sax mouth piece I would only make one in a day. I have seen saxes with carved mouthpieces by hand and they lack a sax sound. Bringing the best of both worlds to my customers is wise. Quality at a great price. Erik

  • @marianocastrogiovanni1476

    great! beautiful sound ... a question, you can add holes to have all the notes of the chromatic scale?

    • @ErikTheFlutemakerCom
      @ErikTheFlutemakerCom  Před 3 lety

      By simply covering half a hole you get a half note. Not good to have too many holes on your instruments. Erik

    I've played the native American flute for many years but thinking of trying something different. Never played a reed instrument before. How difficult would that be to master ??

      @ErikTheFlutemakerCom  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Tony, once saw a small boy in a stroller blow one of my saxes and get sound. When I saw that, I thought anyone can do this. That said, I also sold one to a wise man who could not get sound. The reed lays upon a tight lower lip. Then you produce pressure in the bite. Correct placement, no too far in or out and a sharp huff to get the sound going. Like a Karate kick of breath. At first lots of trial and error. Less pressure to keep it going. But lots of energy and pushing to play. Hope this helps, Erik

    Can u send or make a video about the letters of the of the alto sax and ares os 13 1/4 the circle on the bottom is 1 And the black thing on top is B 5 And what reed we need to us like what number

    • @ErikTheFlutemakerCom
      @ErikTheFlutemakerCom  Před 6 lety

      Hi Nailea: My Alto, (Because in my humble opinion sounds most like a real alto) is my Bb or B Flat instrument. So all closed, which is the root note, or Key is Bb. All fingers closed including the back hole. Then you start opening up from the bottom to the note C, next finger up is D, then Eb (E Flat) F, G, A, and when the back hole is open it is Bb again. The mouthpiece says B5 that is the kind of mouthpiece we use, after much experimentation. And we recommend a tenor 1 1/2 reed. Even though we are using an alto sax mouthpiece. For further questions please email me at info@eriktheflutemaker.com Happy New Year, Erik

    Hi, I recieved an alto sax one as a gift and tossed out the reed for a 3 1/2 size reed I had for my own sax. I have to play at the very top of the mouthpiece to get a decent sound with that reed. Am I having trouble because of the reed size or do I just need to keep on practicing?

    Why the alto saxophone mouthpiece with the tenor reed? And could a thicker reed be used? I use a 3 1/2 on my tenor saxophone, so the mix kind of confuses me. Also, do the wooden need to be oiled?

      The tone of a sax is an octave deeper than the tone or pitch of a flute. The reed of the sax gives a distinct voice over the flute which does not use a reed. We can further comunicate at info@eriktheflutemaker.com Regards, Erik

    How does one play the higher notes loud and clear? I’ve tried playing them and I’m not getting a good response. I know it’s definitely not the flute that is the problem though.

    • @ErikTheFlutemakerCom
      @ErikTheFlutemakerCom  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi Tevin: The 4 higher notes are played with the left hand. I think your problem is an issue of balancing the sax. Holding it steady to be able to get those notes. You can use the bottom right hand pinkie to steady the sax. As well as wrapping the left hand knuckle around the sax. The mouth also help to hold the instument. As to very high notes, my saxes are only one octave instruments. hope this helps, Erik
