    There's something about Jessamine Kaldwin. Not only did the Outsider actively intervene to deprive her of peace in death, but his mark is on 1) her sister, 2) her killer, 3) her lover, and 4) her daughter. That's a lot of supernatural activity around one person, even if she is an empress.

    • @utopian4769
      @utopian4769 Před měsícem +142

      The Outsider seems to bestow his power to anyone who has been well....dishonored. The thing that all those people share in common is that at some point or another they were either dealt a bad or unfair hand, or endured immense hardship, and these issues were often caused by corrupt people in nobility or high status.
      We may have only known Jessamine for a short time but if Delilah's story of being betrayed by her is true and not just a ruse to get us to be sympathetic, then perhaps it shows that the late Empress may not have been the best person. Yeah I know she was a kid at the time, but there's nothing in the game as far as I know that indicates she regretted what she did to Delilah later in life. Not to mention the corruption that festered within Dunwell under her rulership.
      So basically what I'm saying is that, being a possibly corrupt high class political figure with skeletons in your closet in a world where people who are commonly the victims of people like you are granted godlike powers, tend to be a way to get yourself put in an early grave.
      Also for the heart thing. I think the Outsider just has a thing for fates worse than death. Alot of the nonlethal outcomes of certain missions tend to have bittersweet if not straight up bad endings for the people involved. I think it's more or less the same here.

      @@ginaran8921well yes as you can even see people in poverty (in books: one poor single mother) be bestowed gifts simply for being unfortunate aswell as outcasted. The thing is while the power gives the weak agency in their lives, it also pushes them further from civil society, like the more you rely on the void the closer you grow to it. In the sense you'll disappear and be unable to rejoin the public eye or atleast public society even moreso than you were before. Sure Corvo managed to stay with Emily, but the entire time due to his past use of the void, people were plotting against him, scared of him. Which eventually brought him back to the darkness (or canonically sends his daughter into it, Inwhich case you could simply say his curse is being passed down to her metaphorically and literally in a very "sins of the father" kind of ideology) and both had to spend time in the dark even before then both in regards to their relationship, corvos powers, aswell as their nightly training escapades (and corvo also did vigilante stuff)
      and ofc the Cult which is extremelyyyyyy isolated from any civil or modern society. And hide away both all information about them aswell as their physical selves and position in society.

    I don't see it as punishment so much as a twisted and mean spirited jest, which is perfectly in character for the outsider. He hates his eternal existence and is deeply bored with the repeating nature of man. Which is why those whom could choose to do different things, even if those things work against his other interests, are of such fascination to him. He didn't ask to be a god and he most definitely is going very mad with his immortal imprisonment. He does seem to favor those who choose to make the world better but is so bored he will simply provide color commentary most times instead of acting. Which brings us to the heart. It is hard to say how far ranging his insight is but even if it had a more noble purpose built in the heart was definitely to torment corvo initially. The power it possesses could have been given through a less gruesome method. But instead the lore implies the outsider made sure this object would be made. And made sure it would be something that would enrage the already emotionally ravaged corvo.

The first games intro dialogue reads "half the city's dead of plague... the remaining half is fighting over what's left." The great age Jessamine speaks of could also simply be the close-knit lifestyles of pre-industrialization being traded for more the impersonal, sanitized lives we lead in an age of distractions and abundant information. As the world moves more towards technology and the Overseer's power and influence doesn't seem to be waning, it could also be proposed that magic is dying in the world of Dishonered as well. Towards the end of the game the heart reveals that it is the Empress, saying something along the like "this was once my office" whilst in the Empress' room in the palace.

    Another twisted way of looking at it, it can also be interpreted as granting an emotionally distraught corvo solace. In a sick and twisted way, he's carrying around a still-living piece of his lover, who should be dead forever. A fragment of the only remaining thing tying him to his previous life, which cannot be taken from him.
    Given the Outsider's cryptic nature, it is an amazing move, as this little 'gift' to Corvo can be left entirely to Corvo's (and, by proxy, our) interpretation. Corvo can damn the outsider for giving him such a tormenting artifact, thank him for bestowing him a living portion of his lover, use it as a reminder and focal point of his rage upon his enemies, a trinket which holds all his sorrow, and more.

    In one book it mentions some oversees are chosen by picking groups of children who "seem fit for the job", probably meaning kids who seem unstable or are born stronger than the others.
    Said children are to be gathered and trained in the wild when the sun goes down.
    Before the sunrise on the next morning followed by that same day, those who seem fit are to be taken as future oversees, going through more intensive training for the forward years until ready to be released as guard. Meanwhile the children who are decided unworthy, are to be executed before the sun comes up.

    I actually think its a matter of torment more for Corvo and later Emily. They both have an intense connection to her and dont go through directly outsider related events, which can be looked at like punishment, like daud and billy. Daud is pushed by the message of the outsider to conflict with Delilah, and corvo who would reasonably seek out daud was given powers by the outsider(this is only really bad for daud and not corvo as he could or could not seek justice as he chooses). we could say billy suffered by being exhiled in the dlc, but more so is her eye and arm being taken once again, to be replaces with the void appendages, and one might think well it works just the same but better than regular limbs, but it is clear by her yelling that it was very painful.
    The reason i say the heart is corvo and emily being punished is because it serves a genuine purpose, and is the only forced punishment the outsider could inflict on them. Daud and billy are inflicted punishment of a sort in another way, and they have the ability to do EXACTLY the same thing with their own body(dauds void gaze and billys void walk or whatever its called).
    The difference being emily and corvo can basically choose all of the pain they go through technically and the others cannot. Daud is clealy compelled to go through his campaign. Billie cant even pretend to choose as her body is disfigured entirely by force.

    About the heart, if you read a little more about the voicelines of it, you will find that there were no "final rest" to be had for the Empress after death. It is so not only for her, but for every human in Dishonored universe, it was said that after death everyone goes to the void, as it consumes all. I wouldn't call it a punishment. At the end of the day, the Outsider is absolutely neutral with whatever happens in the world. Yes, with his background, he seems to be pleasantly surprised when a protagonist does something good, but he doesn't control anybody and has neutral opinions on almost every character. He's not cruel, at least not on purpose. Saying so just plays into the misconceptions the Abbey have of him and magic in general. I personally think the Outsider did choose favorites this time. Jessamine's death is a catalyst to his own end in the void, and by giving Emily and Corvo the heart, it gave them an advantage and a more likely scenario of his freedom. Whether it was a way to keep their morality in check or to find runes and bonecharms to make themselves stronger, the heart did help them. Jessamine wanted to die the whole yeah, but it's pretty clear in the second game that she still wasn't ready to move on. I think she was probably happier than she was in the first. Her daughter/partner never lost sight of who they were, and she could rest easy that the Empire were finally in the hands of a competent and caring ruler.
    I'm not really into the actual Fandom so I'm pretty surprised that a lot of people seem to think the Outsider is a manipulative and cruel god. I don't really consider him a God tbh. Just an unfortunate human forced into a role he never wanted and can't escape from.

      this comment is really strange; your assessment at the end that the outsider is simply a human being trapped endlessly as the ‘god’ that is the outsider is correct, but despite acknowledging that you fall into the common trap amongst dishonored fans that the outsider is a truly neutral figure. a key point about the outsider’s character (and one that is lost on many people) is that while he does try to appear neutral, he really isn’t. because like you said; at the end of the day he was once a human. he is imperfect. he isn’t a god, but a human being put in the shoes of a god, and honestly he’s just bored and wants to see something interesting happen. he cares less about his neutrality than driving his own little narrative.
      he gave Daud Delilah’s name, which i think was a very important part of the shift in Arkane’s painting of the outsider. in the base game of DH1 the outsider at first glance does appear fairly neutral (although i’d still argue if you look deeply enough you can find that he isn’t) but in the DLC his portrayal subtly shifts. the outsider interacts with Daud in a more familiar way and kind of drops some of the cryptic language, and through this slipping of the mask you can start to see his human side.
      DH2’s portrayal of the outsider is much more human, its a big change that many didn’t like but i think was a good choice.
      of course in DOTO the outsider is effectively fully humanised, it’s the first time his power has ever been challenged (except for the plot point in DH2 where the outsider kind of outwardly states that Delilah is directly drawing from his power and he doesn’t like it) and his facade quickly breaks, which reveals again that he really is just a person.
      basically i’m trying to say that the outsider’s supposed neutrality is a gimmick, but not in a bad way. it plays out when it needs to but i also do like that he’s still imperfect because he’s still a person.

      @@itsukizy I agree that the Outsider has never actually been neutral. He's also never really been only in it for entertainment, either. You can see it by comparing his high and low chaos dialogue to Corvo, including the endings.
      You get the clearest view of it with how he speaks to Daud about killing Jessamine. He is disdainful about it. And he keeps that tone if Daud is high chaos. But if Daud goes low chaos, he seems to lighten up on him.

      I think he is neutral on all moral issues just because he is the Outsider: He's not just outside of the main universe, he's so far outside of humanity he can't relate. He's an immortal thousands of years old. Good people, evil people, they all die soon enough. What's the point of murder, when the victim only has a few decades left? What's the point of saving the innocent, when you only delay the inevitable? He still finds something of a thrill in humans who fight for something they believe in, even though he knows that all causes are ultimately meaningless, because in those people he can vicariously enjoy the thing that is denied to him now: Actually caring about something. Sometimes he lets them have a little of his power, just to make the show more interesting.

    Its decidedly rare to see someone call out the cruelty of the whale hunt. A cruelty that, as you said, is hard to justify. I agree and appreciate this point. Empathy with animals (real or ficticious) seems so rare nowadays and it breaks my heart.

    Whale bone was also historically used to create bone charms and Outsider runes, but I don't think he cares about them too much as so he would punish Jessamine for killing whales

    • @DR3ADER1
      @DR3ADER1 Před měsícem +1

      Those uses for the crafting of charms and runes were done sparingly. The process itself was conducted upon (presumably) from whale corpses that were left beached on the shores for months (and not from the process of whaling living creatures) and there was a high cultural reason behind the practice, and it wasn't wasteful (this is similar to how tribal cultures around the world would also use animal bones for similar spiritual and cultural purposes) due to the limited and non-monetary background behind crafting such items of a ritualistic and traditional nature.
      The Whale Oil refining and harvesting, by contrast, is purely done for industrial and monetary purposes, with little (if any) cultural benefit. Remember, the Outsider is a being heavily affiliated with the Void and the spiritual importance it used to bring to the people who inhabit Dishonored's world.

    I think it's also worth noting that the heart of the empress was super important in dishonoured 2! Delilah's immortality can't be counteracted until her spirit is taken into the heart (finally granting Jessamine rest), and Jessamine clearly enjoys getting to spend time with a grown-up Emily and say a proper goodbye that she otherwise would have been robbed of the chance to do. I wonder if she, too, made a deal with the outsider - though of a very different nature to Corvo and Emily - or if this was both a jest/punishment from the outsider but also something more positive in the long run.

    Jessamine wasn't even a bad empress tbh. The only bad thing I can think of about her reign is the industrial stuff, but that was more a thing that the people around her were doing, not so much her. She was even trying to help with the plague. She obviously cared for her people. Moreso than the regent, that's for sure. When hiram took over, things got worse, not better.

    I mean it's confirmed that it was actually Piero that created The Heart, The Outsider merely gave him hints towards it in his dreams. No idea how The Outsider got it though to give to Corvo, maybe it was him who put Jessamine's soul inside it after Piero created the vessel out of her real heart.
    Many Many years before the game Kirin Jindosh actually created one though it only lived for 13 minutes before turning to ash. My guess it turned to ash because it didn't have the soul of the person who's heart it was trapped inside it.

  • @NathanielTavington
    @NathanielTavington Před rokem +2

    The Outsider isn't "punishing" her, because that is not the Outsider's nature. Punishment implies moral order, and the Outsider does not follow that kind of alignment. He's Chaotic Neutral, in D&D terms. Jessamine's daughter was kidnapped, her lover falsely accused of her murder, it was not the Outsider who prevented Jessamine from her final rest, he only gave her the chance to help Corvo save their daughter and prove his innocence. Sure, it's horrific when you think about it, but in his mind, he's doing what they asked for. He doesn't give a damn about the Industrial Revolution of Dunwall or how they achieved it because he knows, as a being of the Void, that everything ends one way or another. Everything is meaningless to him, the only reason he ever interferes is for his own amusement. Just like how he made Daud and Corvo, Granny and Slackjaw, he creates weapons and then creates foils for those weapons to see which one wins.

    When we firts arrive to the hound pits pub right after the "jailbreak" if we go to piero and listen to the audio tape he's got there he will theorize that may be he can keep a dead heart alive and conserving it's souls by just adding magnets or electricity. This game just feels like a whole critique on society as a whole. Whether it’s the VERY frequent critiques towards the power of greed and control and how it influences those in the “elite” and how it harms those at the bottom. Or critiquing religion, such as the Overseers literally saying that women doing such horrible things like “learning about science and machinery” are witches and should be murdered. It feels like something that would be studied in English classes if it were published during the Industrial Revolution as a book. Like English teachers today would be marveling at the critiques of Industrial society.

    That could be true and all but now without recalling all the info as its been a while, that industrial revolution started way before Jessamines reign and she was basically picking up the pieces of the previous rulers, didn't she? Not sure but she always seemed unpopular and maybe she tried to revolutionise but ran out of time before she could. As for the outsider, it's hard to tell why he tormented her, he didn't even do that to others so I don't think there was a motive other than someone really unlucky being the target of his boredom
