  • Today we cover one of the issues that stops beginners from progressing into the intermediate level quickly and smoothly - GETTING INTO THE FOOTSTRAPS:
    To easily get in the footstaps:
    1. Place them as close to the middle of the board as possible
    2. Find a flatwater spot
    3. Hook in the harness lines and get planning
    4. Go slightly downwind and increase your speed
    5. Put your weight on the harness and on the boom
    5.1 Slide your front foot as close to the footstrap as possible
    6. Step into the front footstrap
    7. Stabilise, go downwind and get more speed
    8. Slide your back foot so that you can touch and feel the back footstrap
    9. Slide your back foot in the footstrap

    Such a good point about the footstrap positioning, certainly a lot easier with inboard straps 😃

    Well it’s a personal thing. As mention here I always put my Backfoot first in the footstraps. Then hook in
    Then planing
    Then frontfootstrap.
    This way it’s safe (no catapult) and cost less energy.
    Yes, you don’t gone a win slalom races with this technique….
    But if I do it the orherway around I can’t get in tot the back footstrap easy. Big feet’s (mt 47). Especially on the 2020 falcon (same as 2019 and 2021). On the 2015 and 2017 falcon it was a more easy

    Will there soon be a video for plaining and getting the board to fly. I would really find that interesting. But I think your videos are really good I really enjoy them... Looking forward for more:-)

      Hi Linus,
      Have you checked already the other videos in the Freeride Web Clinic series? This one is specifically about what to do if the board is not flying.. aka stuck to the water:

    Hi. Great content. Always looking forward yours freeride clincs. My main issue is when I get into the front footstrap I kind of kill the planning momentum. Maybe because the board starts pushing upwind and I struggle to keep it from turning into the wind. Maybe, as suggested I just need to let go downwind and simply gain more speed before going for the first strap.

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Marko,
      Yes, gaining speed and turning downwind before stepping into the front footstrap will help it a lot! Also make sure that you sit down into the harness and put your weight through it - that will help to keep the speed too.

    I use to start with rear bootstrap first. Is it wrong, or some slalom riders do so also?

    Could do instructions for feet in footstraps first then hook in? I always go for footstraps first after gibing, but when I try to do it from water/beach start, my technique is a bit messy. Best regards 👍😃

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 4 lety +1

      Will try to do it after the lockdown is over. The main trick is that you need to provide same pressure throught the mastfoot as you would when hooked in the harness.

  • @mrfish489
    @mrfish489 Před 4 lety +1

    My biggest problem is that when I come out of a jibe and I am fully powered up on slalom gear I find I have to turn up wind to take the pressure off of my back foot to get in the foot strap ,otherwise I get a spray of water that catches my back foot when I got for it, often meaning I miss the strap and end up standing behind it, or miss the board completely and crash. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong ?

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 4 lety +2

      Try leaning forward more and pressing on the boom A LOT - so that you transfer your weight from the backfoot onto the mastfoot (via the boom) instead of the front foot.

  • @joch7957

    Is there any reason to put the front foot first into the footstraps... I always put my backfoot first and its much easier for me.

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 4 lety +1

      yes, exactly.
      Also tends to press the back of the board into the water and for it to turn upwind

    • @dairyairman
      @dairyairman Před 3 lety

      I used to always put my back foot in first, but now I put my front foot in first. I find that with my front foot in first it's easier to keep the board flat on the water and planing, or to initially get on a plane. It also helps keep the board from rounding up into the wind, like others have said. It's a little scarier though! Sometimes it feels like you're about to be catapulted, but I've gotten used to that feeling and have learned how to compensate for it by putting my weight into the harness, like this video says.

    Everytime I try to put my feet in the footstraps, the board luff until I head to the wind. It fells like I have too much weight on the windward of the board so the board shreds the water tending to go upwind. So my back foot tend to stay in the middle of the board to balance the board and go faster. My posture even changes and changes to something stupid like I'm sitting under the harness which I know I should not do that. So that's how I cannot put my feet in the footstaps :)

      Alaçatı is an amazing spot! It's where I learned how to to use a harness, plane, and use the straps after getting good with a salma board in Cesme.
      Normally when you are in the straps, you want your sail pitched far backwards, towards the tail of your board. If you find that doing so is turning you upwind, and that you end up awkwardly squatting, try either one of these:
      1. Move your mast mount further towards the tip of your board. This will allow you to pitch the sail back further, and prevent you from awkwardly squatting. This also will make you turn more down wind.
      2. Move your harness straps further back on the boom. This similarly can prevent that awkward squat and feeling of being dragged forward towards the tip of the board.
      You certainly don't have a technique issue! This is an equipment setup issue. I'd ask one of the renters on the beach what they would recommend, as nearly all of them are also instructors who I'm sure would be glad to help. Once you figure that out it also seems like you could go up to a larger sail. You're really muscling that sail given how awkward of a squat that makes you sit!

    How to slip into the foostraps with GUSTY wind
    1. Enough wind for gliding (not enough: forget the straps)
    2. Your Foot joints (ankle) stabilize your Board.
    3. Put your feet wider apart your legs more spread
    4. forward Foot joint only stabilizes the Board
    5. Backfoot being close to the back-footstrap...slip into it
    6. Now stabilize the Board with the Foot in the back-footstrap
    7. Step into the front-footstrap.

  • @allagreta9990
    @allagreta9990 Před 3 lety +1

    Completely false. Try the opposite: rear foot first in the footstrap and then the front (yes men also can spread their legs) If you don’t know that your feet have to keep the board flat on the water every second you’re on the water ...then stop windsurfing anyway.
