Yeah, it's not plausible, is it?
We're to understand that Costello vehemently WANTED to testify. He was full of fire and brimstone. He was, to put it plainly, irrationally confident of his own rhetorical abilities. And evidently he convinced Donald Trump, a person of similar convictions.
So no, he wasn't reluctant about testifying, far from it. He wasn't looking for an escape hatch to save himself from immortal embarrassment. He was ready to go down in history as the star witness who, at the eleventh hour, would exonerate the criminal defendant Donald Trump and make his own name in the pantheon of the new order.
But that's not, in fact, what happened. Because reality caught up with these miserable wicked sycophantic lying conspirators. And Costello, far from making Trump look innocent, firmly and credibly and with specificity established his guilt, his intentional involvement in a deception.
Isn't that the correct account of events?

Putting Costello on the stand turned out to be incredibly stupid, but at least they didn't do something even dumber, like putting Trump on the stand. He would have been the prosecutors' star witness against himself.
