  • In this video we are looking at various methods to changing the direction of rotation in single phase motors when used on drills, mills, lathes etc.
We explore the inner workings of a motor, how to wire and what’s required to change the direction of rotation. This includes a breakdown of switches and what makes them suitable and why others can’t be used.
We also carry out an example where we wire a few motors and test to prove we have directional control through the switch.
Hopefully I’ve covered in depth how this is done, there should be no reason to wire switched incorrectly in the future!

Great video and i nearly had it all worked out for the elliott switch ha ha ...... you need t odo a vid just on that elliott switch t owire a compton motor or hoover motor... im a bit thick when it comes to electrics.. mechanical i can do fine.. i want to wire up my mates elliott progress 2gs for him.... he got the drill with no motor and someone undone the wires on the back of the switch and even took away a couople of screws that we shall source from something lese...

Thank you for the feedback! What is it your struggling with, is it a single phase motor or a three phase? Three phase motors are much simpler to wire as you can have one phase on the bottom switched single terminal, then wire one of each phase to one of each of the terminals on top, the switch changes the phase over which changes the direction.

Another good video, is your centec universal or horizontal? I've got a warco milling machine, quite versatile, but I've always fancied a centec, so any centec content would be much appreciated, thank you for your time, producing these videos.

As with the other comments, thank you for taking the time to leave one! They aren’t bad machines, the one that features in this and an earlier video is a universal with the mk3 head. Versatile they are, but lack available capacity. I have upgraded since, I no longer have the centec, but the new mill will be featuring very soon!

Hello I have a mill with the same set up as the tech top motor at 6,00 with the same bridging pattern to reverse direction can you please tell me what switch to buy and how to wire it so i can have reverse. The switch you used looked old and I cant find one like it. Thank you very much.

Hi, a great question! So you have a modern style motor with 6 terminals. This is good as they are quite easy to manage. I’m not sure of your geographical location but here in the Uk somewhere like eBay is the easiest place to get one. You need to search for a motor reversing switch and there are two kinds, a traditional style three position on off on rotary switch (a bit like the fobco switch) and a drum switch normally associated with lathes. They’re all Chinese and vary in price from £15 to £20. I would always go for the higher amp rated switch because we all know Chinese amps aren’t as powerful as other amps. The drum switches are good because they isolate the live as well as everything else in the off position so you don’t need a separate isolator like I had to use, I am not sure about the rotary switch because I haven’t used one before. As long as you can swap the terminals over you are good, but I know sometimes it’s hard to visualise how to do it! I have recently wired a lathe up using a modern style motor and drum switch so if I get chance I could do a short on how it’s wired if that’s useful?

Good stuff, but I must complain a bit about your touchy feely fingers dancing around terminals connected to capacitors. A good way to get zapped. Always discharge them before servicing.

A great comment, thank you for pointing this out! I understand the dangers associated with capacitors but it’s always good to remind folk 👍
