  • When you know how to identify worm castings you can start harvesting worm castings whenever you see it and without a worm bin.
Worm castings is a nice way of saying worm poop. Worm castings are a natural fertilizer and soil amendment. The nutrients in worm castings are like a slow release fertilizer so there's little to no chance of burning your plants. Worm castings also contain beneficial microbes that help keep your soil alive and well so your plants will grow strong and healthy.
Worm castings are made from worms eating and digesting food scraps and/or other organic matter. Once digested, the worms release this uniform ball like soil, poop, better known as castings. Whenever you see this type of "soil" you can collect the worm castings.
Store the castings in a container and try not to let the castings dry out. The castings need moisture in order for the microbial life to survive.
I used old food to find out what worms eat. See what they like:

The worm castings are looking a little too dry! I'm hoping there's still enough life in it to be beneficial for my plants.

Thank you! Maybe I'll add a little bit of dirt for the microbes next time I collect.
