Why Did Mark Cuban Sell the Mavericks?

  • Mark Cuban was the last NBA owner people thought would ever sell so it was a shock he did so while having a legend like Luka Doncic on the team. Many fans thought there is more to the story and they were right. This is a look at why Cuban really sold his most prized asset.

All true. They made watching it at home too inaccessible or difficult to watch to most of their fans internationally. It's also turning off their main base fans in the USA since the game is so soft and competition from players are generally being questioned. I get it, no one liked games where teams could barely score 80pts. But when 140 point games become frequent, it also dilutes the experience. Then the all star games have been garbage. So the NBA has become a product that is still watchable but all the signs are there that it needs immediate course corrections or otherwise there will be a bubble.

Thank you A.M. Hoops, this is gold. For all his reputation as a “relatable ordinary man” Cuban is nothing but a charlatan. He got lucky 30 years ago being at the right place at the right time. His genuine passion for basketball was his only strength, and it carried him for the last 20 years, along with the media attention he received through interviews and reality shows, like he is some kind of intelligent man. Clearly it got to his head. It saddens me as a long time Mavericks fan to see the inevitable end of this franchise, I hope casinos never get legalized in Texas for the wellbeing of everyone who lives there, and I hope the evil Adelsons take their investment back to Vegas or Israel. That’s the big vision of the visionary Cuban who has zero clue about anything, the man is so disconnected from reality as is most of the Sports world.

Gambling in sports has very very quickly gotten out of control. I was all for it four years ago, and I couldn't have been more wrong. There is nothing more obnoxious than seeing an ad for sports betting on every single sports video I watch, as well as the actual NBA.
Seeing an ad for sports betting every 60 seconds is frustrating, annoying, and predatory to say the least. Would be different if it was once in a blue moon, but the NBA clearly has some sort of deal going with the brokers, or else they wouldn't allow this. It has quickly become disgusting, and I don't appreciate it being jammed down my throat at literally every opportunity they get. PLEASE stop.
Wanna watch a game with a friend? "Hey bro, who gonna win tonight?" Followed by a wrong or even right prediction, and the entire fucking game being ruined as they stare at their phone to see if their parlay hit. Please stop the total degeneracy.
It would also feel a little bit less predatory if the NBA weren't investigated by the FBI for rigging games due to gambling, which you have made several videos about...

TX is huge and rich and filled with sports nuts. The proceeds from say a dozen casino's with sports books would be nuts. If anyone can convince the legislature to turn on this spigot is going to make a fortune. Mark Cuban is one of the guys who can do it. The new owners run casinos.

so I am no American (just an economist), feel free to take it with a grain of salt but a question: What is many? What are the proportions of travel we are talking about here?
Doesn't that still mean that it takes a LONG way to Oklahoma? I mean I do not know the exact proportions but Texas is an enormous state is it not?
Because if it takes like 500, or maybe even 1000km (don't know what that would constitate to in miles and don't care, truth is metric is the best) that would already restrict the poorest Texans from gambling by not being able to cover the costs for these long trips would it not? And if that was the case that would actually be beneficial to Texas as a whole because those mostly in danger to gambling addictions are the poorest people of a society... otherwise this in turn creates a self perpetual cycle of creating more and more misery leading to the continious loss of capital of the state citizens in favor of an industry that abuses human psychology but what do I know... let's see if it makes a difference. Let's see if the state continues to prosper over the long run from it, given the fact that they had to pay 3 million to even allow it, meaning politicians who should be happy about more jobs opposed it for obviously better reasons, I doubt it...

This is a really nice take on things. I'll elaborate a bit more. Many people forget that besides being a sport, the NBA was also always entertainment TV. Up to a point whatever choices the head of the NBA made most of the time seemed to be the right ones. Like investing on your superstars, and making the coverage available to the whole world to watch it. Everything was great; amazing even. Then something happened, that usually means trouble for any company. The money became TOO much! Most of the times (maybe not always) brings greed with it. Maybe it's from the founding members or maybe it's from the newer investors. The NBA's problem the last decade+ has been GREED! They try to hide it as best they can, but those who follow the sport have noticed it as well. It seethes from every corner, through the decisions they make.
For example, the players have always protested against the - basically slave labor - that is 82 games + offseason games. Their bodies can barely take this abuse, and they're right. I personally don't know of any other sport in the world that abuses it's players like this. Can you guess why the management is so adamant in not changing this? Then there's the officiating. "People want fast paced games, because they get bored with real basketball". Solution: every kind of contact is a defensive foul. Everybody gets a score! Good ratings! Good money! Mmmmm! (their assumption).
Next... have you ever noticed how the officiating in games is not at all consistent? Yeah? It's not because they suck. And you'll notice this become most evident during the playoffs. The playoffs bring HUGE money to the NBA, and they, for sure as hell, don't want your clearly superior team, playing ONLY 4 GAMES with each opponent. Nooooo, they want that cheddar... So how do they solve this? Well, the officials ( you know the "judges" that are eployed by them) can fix it for you. They are the actual 6th player. And they hold a lot of power. They can rig your game to go anyway the higher ups want it. Most players are afraid to say this publicly because they might lose their job, but some have done so.
These are some of the things that manifest because money is more important than the NBA. But now it has gone so far that people are starting to notice. This kind of "sport cancer" isn't visible, but long time viewers can feel it. The grand life that is being an NBA player is just a glorified prison, built on the dreams of young kids, some of which (if talented enough) will someday be able to see both, a lot of money in their hands, and their favorite sport being abused.

I've been predicting the TV deals were going to go south because of cord cutting. Cable doesn't have the money to fund these sports at the levels they are used to, and no league is setup to handle decreasing salary caps. I just thought the NHL would feel the squeeze first.

Maybe the reason the ratings are going down is because the play way too many games in the regular season that it gets tiring for the casual viewers. I think it would be better if they have games and schedule like soccer in europe. Where they play on weekends hence you can promote the games during the week. Plus more people would be watching on weekends

True but the most contributing factor is that watching from home has become too expensive. Too many regional blackouts. With prices of other things going up as well, prioritizing a luxury, which the NBA has become, has contributed to people staying away from it on a regular basis.

Tv vs streaming. Competition in the streaming space is high keeping the price low. Streaming companies don’t mind taking a loss since it’s still in its infancy and fighting for position. TV is keeping prices inflated to stay afloat. The bubble will burst once TV dies and the streaming company has to sustain the price of the content. Streaming prices will skyrocket or content will stop being made.

I have a league pass subscription but I won't watch a regular season game, only playoffs. I am not interested in seeing lackadaisical defense, refs going on power trips and players doing shady af moves to get free throws. At least it's a little bit exciting during the playoffs when there are stakes involved for the players.

  • @LyricalMurderer1
    @LyricalMurderer1 Před 3 měsíci +1

I don’t think we need to overthink this as “shady”. The families that bought the team have the deep pockets needed to provide the Mavs the infrastructure needed to compete in the modern NBA. He can still run the team and make decisions, which is his passion. If he did get out of his crypto investments on time as you claim then money shouldn’t have been the issue… he would have more than triples his gains with Titan alone.
