- Today we're taking a look at Futurama Season 11 Episode 10, All The Way Down. I loved the Futurama Finale and its approach to dealing with Simulation Theory. Futurama is at its best when it takes on hefty scientific ideas and explores them with philosophy and emotion.
I loved the stuff with Bender, and the sweet moments with Fry and Leela. What did you think?

This episode definitely achieves Futurama’s golden formula of “philosophical sci-fi meets heartwarming character examinations” but ironically makes a me a little annoyed because it nails certain aspects (Amy’s intelligence, Fry and Leela’s dynamic etc.) that other episodes this season dropped the ball on
I feel that 😅 I'm relieved to know they've "still got it," but they clearly knew which episode was gonna be the best received. I'm still absolutely baffled by last week's episode
I agree. The season was a real roller-coaster, but did trend towards good. I found that as expected, the episodes trying to ride a pop-culture or current event really fell flat and I didn't enjoy all that much, but the ones where they just told a story or explored some interesting concept were really great. I hope the next season is able to knock more of the rust off and they realize trying to chase current trends is not the way to make Futurama, which has an aging cast, aging writers and aging audience.
@riffler24 I think that's a very reasonable assessment 😅
2:33 and it was a Nice callback to That Darn Katz with Amy being a scientist and her asking the questions
I love That Darn Katz tbf, such a fun episode
Definitely my favorite episode of this new season. Perfect way to end it season, hope they continue on 🤞
Definitely felt like a welcome return to form!
All The Way Down perfectly captures what makes Futurama so special. The same way Meanwhile and Game of Tones did. Using scientific theory to give us a heartwarming story.
Couldn't agree more!
This was one of my favorite episode, thanks for the summary
Any time! Glad you liked the episode, it was my favorite too ❤️
Xmas, Zapp gets canceled, the bonebot and this are the highlights of this season
Definitely some of the highlights. I also loved seeing Kif and Amy's kids.
@@renrants oh yeah! The episode wasn't the best it could be but the story and sentiment was on point!
Yeah, it definitely fell a smidge flat but I was still happy that there was follow up at all
@@renrants absolutely. I think they did it a bit too early while they were still trying to get back on their feet. I'm excited to see what they do with the family in future!
@windgraceproject me too! I wish we'd seen a bit more of them!
Just saw this episode and it was beautiful 😭
It made me SO happy!
I'd just hope that Hulu will still keep Futurama going for a lot more seasons with more 20 more episodes and hopefully goes on for it's 200th episode
Fingers crossed!
They should've kept it off air honestly. Unless they pull something put of their magic hat that is great.
NO Fucking Way @@travis2893
I thought this episode was pretty close to "great" honestly, but I can sympathize with that perspective with how bad some of the episodes were 😅
@travis2893 besides we the fans deserve more seasons of Futurama
7:32 well at it was a nice character ark for Bender
It definitely was, he's had a surprising amount of weird existential episodes tbh, like I should have included Overclockwise for example
At 9:30 I accidentally cut off a section early and missed it in my watch through, it's supposed to say "the denizens of the simulated universe won't notice a difference" sorry about that 😅
Interesting analysis and cause for rumination. I wonder if there is an interconnective thread of consciousness that keeps everyone the same across the succeeding universes. Thank you.
Ooh that is a good question, predeterminism is so interesting conceptually
@@renrants I think predeterminism would be on one time line or universe as people would be locked into their fates, like old time predestination.I was thinking that each universe has stretch in their fates. From dimly remembered college religion 101 class. You are way above my pay grade on things. Thank you.
Ooh yeah it would be interesting to see how much would change in the various simulations.
I almost wish we could revisit the idea with an episode like The Farnsworth Parabox where we got to see all those other slightly different (or wildly different) universes
@@renrants Thank you.
By far the best episode of the season. A couple of things I thought of while watching. One the movie "The Thirteenth Floor", which was based on the book Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye - basically it's a murder mystery, but a murder inside a simulation, inside a simulation. Really good under-rated movie, that if you haven't seen it, you probably should. This episode reminded of that story, without the murder of course. And I think the name of the computer may even be a slight reference to the story. SimuTron - Simulacron (?) sound similar. The other thing this reminded of was the time when the professor created the entire universe (in a box), and in a parallal professor created the universe (in a box) at the same time. In other words, this is twice now that our professor has created a universe (twice that I can remember). In the Farnsworth Parabox, coin flip outcomes would be different, meaning that even thou they were the same (sort of) people, the universes were very different. And you can see that in this episode, where the simulated universe makes slightly different choices. I wonder what happened to the box that contains "our universe".
I am actually playing with a script on "the many universes of Futurama" featuring this episode, The Farnsworth Parabox and the one where they go to the edge of the universe and there's versions of them with cowboy hats 😂
I'll definitely check out that movie though!
@@renrants I forgot about that episode. I'll be looking for your video.
well even though the season may be over but I'll always LOVE Futurama and I'd guess it's back to binging episodes of Rick and Morty till the new season starts at least the new voice actors sound on point at least it will get me excited for the New season for Rick and Morty
I'm kind of interested to see a season without Justin Roiland for sure!
same here at least Solar Opposites did there 4th season with there replacement for Krovo and it was actually pretty funny with a British voice actor@@renrants
@user-jh4lx4mi3c I never got into Solar Opposites, is it worth another look?
yes it is there 4th season is really funny@@renrants
so basically the whole show we’ve watched for 20 decades is literally an infinite loop of simulations with in simulations.
It sure looks that way
And I’d say our reality just might be too!
3:52 I'd thought was a funny call back to the first episode of the season when Fry was set to binge very show ever made
Yeah that definitely made me chuckle 😅
my favorite episodes of this season is The Impossible Stream to How The West was 1011101 to I Know What you did Next Xmas to Related to Items you've Viewed it as a great Jab at Amazon to Amy and Kiff having kids it may not be as emotionally deep as Jurassic Bark but it did made me cry and Zapp Got Canceled was Pretty funny
Those episodes all had great moments! I think I'll have to rewatch the season in it's entirety to decide which ones I liked the best besides the finale and the Xmas episode
Best episode of the season along with the Xmas episode
Indeed!
I think pantheon had the best approach to the implications of simulation theory. Spoilers ahead. Instead of being like "uh it doesn't matter cause there's nothing we can do about it" they went like "it doesn't matter cause it's exactly the same" this has some really cool implications.
I still need to watch it! I've heard it's really good.
The distinction between those two ways to frame simulation theory is really interesting, I think one asks the question "what is real" while the other asks "does reality matter if it's real to us?"
@@renrants yeah it was such a refreshing and novel take on the subject. And the story gets wild. One of my favorite things right now is to listen to people try to explain the plot of pantheon to other people. It always sounds absolutely insane.
@tabbris that makes me want to watch it even more! I love an absolutely insane plot from time to time 😂
this was a Great finale
It was wonderful and really felt like a return to form
I can answer that with a profound-no, we are not living within a simulation. Every particle of the universe interacts, even when WE are not observing it-therefore, there must be another observer.
Interesting. I've seen some stuff alleging the universe knows when it's being observed and behaves differently, but I personally don't buy into simulation theory as being real 😂
@@renrantsOne of the core tenants of quantum theory is that for matter to exist, there must be an observer. Since matter does not spontaneously come into existence nor does it spontaneously cease to exist, then it follows there must be an observer with capacities beyond the cosmos that is always observant of the events. A simulation does not permit this, as the coding shortcuts applied would effectively cause matter to cease to exist if not being observed. It could be stored in data to be accessed again-but this would violate the requirement of an observer for matter to exist-unless the observer Himself were the storage medium.
That is very interesting! Thank you for sharing, I suppose this is why a lot of physicists end up believing in some kind of higher power 🤔
Aquarium simulation or ancient alien theory, do not get me started lol
But now I'm tempted...
Although it doesnt matter if we are in a simulation or not, i truly dont think we are. Most creative people that write worlds and stories are essentially running simulations of their own worlds. That would just be too computationally hard. Ther are billions of minds each with their own thoughts and some thinking of their own worlds. Essentially, if we were in a simulation, we would be seeing the pixels
That's interesting, as someone who loves to write, I love that idea.
I think with Simulation theory, the idea is that it's an extremely complex simulation to the point where the scale basically unimaginable for us, but personally I also don't think we're in a simulation, the mundane is just TOO mundane.
I was hoping Bender would've called back the events of Godfellas, since he of all people would understand the downsides of playing God.
Yeah, I was thinking about that too, also the events of the Farnsworth Parabox 🤔
Over I'd think it was a Good season with a few missteps my least favorite being the vaccine episode to Zapp gets Canceled to The Prince and the Product but I'd still do think it's a Good season
Yeah, there were a few episodes below what I'd consider average quality for Futurama, but they were still good compared to other animated shows and even the missteps still had their moments
4:43 pretty much how I do my deep thinking on the toilet Don't ask
No judgment 🤣
Wait so simulated Professor Farnsworth just casually decided to destroy the universe to see if it would happen?
More glitch it out, but also yes 😅
Just saw this Episode and it just didn't make any sense about what the Professor is doing acting like this is first time he has done something like this..
Remember the Episode where the Professor made the "What if Machine" ?? Wasn't that him doing a Simulation before? Also when the Professor is sitting at the round table talking with the crew I just noticed for the first time he has a better chair then the crew 🤣
I think he's always had the fancy chair, which is very on brand for him 😂
It is also not the first time he's created a universe either! The Farnsworth Parabox was a multiverse adventure that was super wacky and weird and fun 😅
There was also the episode where he played God when he created the nanobots that subsequently evolved into higher lifeforms. The time travel into the future with each successive universe identical to the previous universe. Sending Bender back in time to steal artifacts from the past, resulting in thousands of benders waiting in the basement. The episode on free will nullifies the universe being a simulation. Did Bender choose to enter the simulation, or was he preprogrammed to do so.
it seems like they did what Rick and Morty did before from the tiny universe way back in Season 2 But I'm sure the writers of Futurama are smart enough to come up with there own things and NOT Rip off Rick and Morty
Yeah, it's definitely a different take on it. I considered making some Rick and Morty References but their approach was a lot more nihilistic whereas Futurama took the opposite approach to whether it matters if we aren't real
