The second goal by Bobby Charlton was one of the best goals of all time. The run and dummy by Law was sensational, the sprint and pass by Brian Kidd was superb and the thunderbolt shot by Charlton that rocketed past Pat Jennings was simply unforgettable. Twenty one years later I met Sir Bobby at London Euston station as we both boarded the train to Manchester and I had the pleasure of spending a few minutes with him remembering that goal. Can you believe the great man THANKED me for applauding his goal !! In 55 years of watching football, definitely one of my three all time favourite goals. I could watch this goal all night even though I am a Liverpool fan ! Fabulous memories !
I was at that game. My Friend and I travelled overnight from Belfast as two 14-year-olds. Spectacular game, forever etched in my mind. Charlton's two goals, Pat Jennings scoring and a debut for Brian Kidd.
One of the greatest goals I have ever seen. I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Bobby about 35 years ago, as we were both boarding a train to Manchester one summer night. I reminded him of that fabulous goal. Sir Bobby beamed and replied modestly, " Yes, that was a good one,". He then thanked ME for eulogising about his goal ! What a gentleman and a legend !
Tavy@ i never realised how great bobby charlton really was with both feet and as an all round player the ability he had was awesome to watch. Hes the only centre forward i know that controled the midfield Better than the midfielders did lol. A loved the way he got the ball with his back to hes opponent to just send them the wrong way just with a little jink and drop of the shoulder, that would then give him enough space to do what he wanted. And his passing was just sublime. A still dont know what was hes weaker foot!!!!
This game was due to be the first match the BBC covered in colour but when they tried to play the tape back all they had was black & white! Good old BBC!!!!
The only time that I saw United at Old Trafford, Pat Jennings goal was unforgettable, as was Bobby Charltons second. Saw them at Forest and Leicester as they were the nearest grounds to my home in Boston. I also saw them win 6-1 at West Ham and I got to see our banner on the TV when we got home. It's so good to see the old games on CZcams ,one is reminded of the wonderful team they had that season.
Tavy@ a great game. And bobby charltons 2 goals when he was at hes best. Charlton was just brilliant to watch. the way he made it look so easy changing from 1 foot to the other and on parks that were mud swamps and with a wet leather ball that weighed at least a stone. Bobby charlton was with out doubt the best midfielder that ever played the game. He didnt look as though he played centre forward. Best didnt have a great match or even good. A was suprised to see how many bad matches best had compared to good. Especialy before 1966. I never would of thought that about best becouse of how good he was or could be. Till a watched them on utube. Going onto 1970,71 72, a noticed he looked alot lazier and maybe not really interested. we know he was great at the start of the 1971,72 season then into 1972 the second half of that season he was never the same and a year later finished at only 26.
A remarkable game not least for what was a prestige friendly. Could not believe my eyes as Charlton was about to be booked; had he been booked many times? Turns out never as this misdemeanour was quietly dropped. TBF, though, he protested about the wall moving when it obviously did not and also seemed to be 10 yards back in any case.
15,20 illustrates the sheer menace of Best in his prime. Lightning fast, balanced. Best when he was still the sublime talent and not the drink sodden superstar
To me, he could have easily taken the ball to his left hand side and stroked it home with half the goal to aim at. If these were the highlights, then what was Best doing for the rest of the game. He may have had a slight injury but he seemed to be largely anonymous to me. Maybe he had been on the piss the night before?
Many times when I watch Best from this era he seems more mediocre than good. Flashy, selfish but not often much end product. Got better then got worse. Nice to watch because he was nice to watch if you know what I mean

To this day I do not know if Bobby Charlton was left or right footed.

The first game my father took us to and still ranks as one of the BEST. Even Kenny wolstenholmes commenting is a MASTERPIECE.

When football was football. Old leather case ball players today could not kick.
That is old trafford. When did they start playing the game at Wembley?
A few days earlier Pat Jennings had a stinker against Celtic in a 3-3 draw and then scores from a goal kick today!
The highs and lows of football.

Bobby Charlton still annoyed about being booked that day all these years later!

JENNINGS WAS THE BEST IN THE WORLD
He still is
