I’d take in consideration the miles on the block the heads are going on and what is the motor being used for. Low miles and strictly racing, new aluminum heads. High miles and only cruzing, P heads. Ei personally would go junk yard route.
I say run 'em if you have them.....its what I would do and have done the exact same thing many times. So far, I haven't been burned. I have found aluminum heads almost always need to be gone through even brand-new out of the box.
I still play with the gt40 heads. About to put a set on my 302 swap ranger. But I also save money fixing and build them myself except for resurfacing. Other problem with a lot of the aluminum heads is most of them have a 2.02 intake valve and that’s not gonna work with a stock piston 😢
If they have to go to the machine shop they are not worth it. At a certain point it better to buy the entire Explorer engine. I have run a couple with good results.
I usually get the p heads decked .030 at the machine shop for $100. Then trick flow springs and a home port job. I have all the tap and dies to fix the threads. It definitely is one of my favorite low buck mods. Remember with aluminum heads you need roller rockers then hardened push rods , intake spacer and taller valve covers.
I don't think it's worth it to use the old heads. You can buy me aluminum heads out them together right and have new not used. I agree the old steel gt40 are a risk
Question. I have aluminum ford racing Y303 heads with a GT 40 intake that is on the engine when i bought it.Are those heads just another name for gt 40 heads ?
Unfortunately I have no experience with these heads. I did google it and they seem to come up as GT40 aluminum. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Your #9 in the draw.
The Ford Racing GT40 aluminum heads were never put on the Explorer, Cobra or Lightning - those all used cast iron GT40 heads with 1.84 & 1.54 valves (GT40P are 1.84 & 1.46). "Y303" is part of the Ford racing part number, there were various others; X303, Z304, etc. The Y303 are the "Turbo Swirl" heads with 64cc chambers, 1.94 & 1.54 valves. (Info from 2003 Ford Racing catalog.)
I have a set from Neo Mustangs, 950 00 dollars 6 years ago! Machined, trick flow springs,3 angle value job, ready to go.Still on the shelf, lmao!
Damn those sound nice! Do you have a car in mind to put them on?
Your number 2 for our draw.

Great points! Thanks for commenting. Your number 4 for the draw.
I doubt I'd mess with iron heads anymore unless I got some Cleveland 4V closed chamber heads for cheap to do a clevor build or something
I only mess with them when I can find them cheap. They are hard to find up here in Canada. Thanks for commenting!

It’s definitely a good idea to inspect a new set of heads. Thanks for your input. Your number 10 in the draw.
run them if you have them but yeah those new heads are tempting.
Yeah. I wouldn’t mind trying a set. Thanks for your comment. Your #11 for the draw.

Good point. I would love to have a set of twisted wedge for that reason. Your #7 for the draw.

@@russellbroadwell it would be nice to find a few low mileage explorer engines. Your #13 for the draw. Thanks for commenting.
I try to put theme on if I had a set to try
Your a bit of a gambler too Shawn! Your lucky number 1 for the draw.

Hi Matt! Glad to hear from you. Sounds like some nice mods. How fast have you run with these?
Your number 3 for the draw.
@@AlteredStangs I have them on my street car full weight 92 triple white convertible on streets tires leaving at a idle I have run 8.80's @ 82 mph .
@@2camsam very nice Matt.
You don't "need" roller rockers & hardened pushrods with ALL aluminum heads. There are some that still use bolt down/pedestal mount rockers.
@@foxfordcatguy2283 True but why buy nice head that is stuck with inferior valvetrain?
No, stay with cast heads. Alloy head expand and crack blocks and run to cold. Mike

@@AlteredStangs awesome for the record i still run ported e7 heads
@@mikeoxlong9537 that’s awesome. Nothing wrong with ported E7’s. Some decent flow numbers can be had with those.
