    As a locksmith in a large school district (9 schools ) 22 buildings overall , I'm constantly getting called to emergency's almost daily and when I arrive the administrator wants to know why I don't have a tool bag . I ask them to show me the problem and 95% of the time I can fix it with my routine EDC . Having a well rounded selection of tools and 40+ years of experience eliminates the need for extra props .

    IMHO, this is your best video ever, instead of being about snobbing, and who has what it is about learning, and finding ways to have tools to solve problems in all aspects of our lives. I personally would love to hear about what the wild west or mountain man edc was like, (fan of old western stories). Thank you.

      You should look into Backwoods magazine, and bushcraft channels if that’s the type of content you’re looking for. This channel has always been more of a “look at this cool guy gear” EDC type channel, most people IMO in the EDC world today have the gear because EDC is cool these days. To be honest a TON of all this cool guy EDC is pointless for the very people carrying them, and they only carry them for cool guy points. A wallet, knife, and house keys are enough EDC for the vast majority of the population, even in “the EDC world”.

    Something me and the wife have noticed over the years that we have been watching your channel; Almost no one carries any cordage. We both carry about 10 feet of kite string and a couple of feet of something else like 1/4 inch or smaller nylon cord. It"s sort of like when folks are given a pocket knife for the first time as an adult. Their first response is almost always "Thank you but I will probably never use it. I never need one now." And a week or so later they come back with "Wow! Thank you so much! I never realized how much I needed a pocket knife." The didn't realize it because they didn't have the option. Cordage doesn't come up nearly that often but when it does it"s super helpful and weighs almost nothing while taking up minimal space. The other one for me, is large paper clips which I rarely use as paper clips. Just that little bit of wire goes a very long way for all kinds of stuff. Hope this has been helpful and keep on doin' the damn thing.

      I carry a LOT of cordage. But I have a farm, so my edc cordage has a high turn over rate.
      I could survive off just my knowledge, but I'll always carry a good knife, lighter, and paracord, because I would hate to have to rely on a stone knife, friction fire, and natural fiber rope.

    I am a backpacker, and I love learning tips and tricks from EDC, bushcrafters, ex-military, preppers, homesteaders, and historical reenactors (just to name a few). Each has a different context-wilderness, suburbia, SHTF, etc.-but in a sense they are all about the same thing: survival. I find that they all have something I can apply in my own context. Your channel is one of my favourite urban EDC resources. I’m so glad to see you expanding your knowledge and I can’t wait to see how it influences your perspective and future EDCs!

  • @samwebb585
    @samwebb585 Před 2 lety +14

    I love the outdoors, and I love EDC. One thing that I think transcends "tribes" is that the goal is to be prepared. EDC is used, IMHO, in a more "urban" or "emergency" type idea, but in the bushcraft sense what you carry really can be the difference between spending the night hypothermic, or spending the night comfortable.
    For me, carry items have to meet three criteria:
    - Is it genuinely useful?
    - Is it situationally appropriate?
    - Do I love it?
    As a result I find I have an absolute minimum EDC that works for everyday and a more serious pack plus gear for adventures. The end result is the same though - am I prepared for what I think I might get into - whether that's in a coffee shop or half way up a mountain.
    Some videos worth a watch are the Esee ones - Patrick has some great insights - and the Hill People Gear "longhouse" series.

  • @FireHawkISA
    @FireHawkISA Před 2 lety +19

    This. I LOVED this video. I'm a practicing wilderness instructor, and this was my entire entry into EDC. This was my express reasoning for pushing the LighterBro Bic sleeve, it has a few useful urban tools, a blade, and the most reliable way of starting a fire - a lighter. I've found a lighter is a useful tool in urban settings too lol.
    However, a wilderness-focused lighter sleeve would be incredible, and I'd buy it immediately.

    Thanks Taylor, this is one of the best videos you've made in a while! I'm kinda surprised you weren't more familiar with bushcraft. I don't really think the topic is very far removed (although I'm never much of a fan of pocket jewelry). It'd be cool to see you apply this concept to some other similarly related topics, ultralight backpacking and disaster prepping come to mind right off the bat as good places to start.

    I have completed my EDC setup so now my focus is on learning some of the skills to make the tools I carry useful. Example: first aid kit. I have one in each of my bags but I've very little knowledge (rule 5) on how to use them. That is where my EDC journey is going from here.

    • @Greg-zr4wm
      @Greg-zr4wm Před rokem

      For first aid applications just from my experience.
      I suggest if you can find locally something like an outdoors first aid / survival course, or a course that utilizes a trauma kit.
      I've taken regular first aid courses and they teach basics but nothing special.
      When you take a survival course or a course that utilizes a trauma kit, they teach you more skills and which products are nicer to use. Ie will not stick to the wound.
      In a lot of situations you'll find you don't have exactly the right supplies. You need to be able to improvise.
      As an example Something I carry in my edc mini trauma kit is a small tie down strap.
      Yes ideally never move an injured person. But if in an active situation could be a fire or even a live shooting. You may need to move someone that has been injured,to a safer location. You can loop the strap around their upper body close to their arm pits then back to yourself. Now you can drag them if you are unable to carry them or just have to keep low.
      As well in a worse case situation where I have already used my tourniquet. I can improvise another with my strap, or just use it to keep pressure on a wound to free up my hands.
      For a little background I commute by bicycle most of the time around the city and was a first responder up until I went off on disability. As well I use to spend every minute I could in the mountains.

    I carry a Recycled Firefighter wallet and have all my cards and other wrapped in 2 separate rangerbands on either end of my wallet...it keeps them organized and nice and tight. I am old school and actually still make my own from inner tubes and use them constantly in my EDC and at work as and industrial mechanic/machinist. I am retired military and have used them beginning in the Marine Corps and continue to use them to this day as part of my KISS mentality. Great video as always, keep up the great work!

  • @stevenb.182
    @stevenb.182 Před 2 lety +4

    Great video !!! Ranger bands....been using them for years. Here's a couple of tips..... Don't buy the "ready made" versions. If you cut them from bicycle tubes, you can have them any width (strength) that you want. Go to your local professional bicycle shop, be polite, and explain what you are looking for (and why)....bad bicycle tubes. Bike shops don't patch tubes....they replace them. And they probably have the punctured tubes (all different size, i.e. diameters) in a box, or in the trash can; that they will probably give you, for free. Final tip.....these ranger bands make great fire starters. They burn hot, and for a longer time, than you might think.

    Excellent video! I use a Ranger Band in my everyday carry and have for years. Two items I carry on my EDC pocket key ring are a Swiss Tech Micro Multi Tool and a P-38 can opener. When I began carrying them I had two problems. The Micro Multi Tool would unfold in my pocket and create a sort of mechanical porcupine in my pocket that was uncomfortable with stabs to my leg and to my hand when I reached into the pocket. The sharp, pointy hook hinged to the body of the P-38 would unfold in my pocket and stab my leg as I walked. Solution was to place the P-38 next to the Micro Multi Tool and secure them together with a Ranger Band. Problem solved. Neither one of them can unfold and stab me.

The knives and fire source(s) I carry today are not the matches or lighter & pocketknife I carried 50 years ago, much less the match safe and knife my grandfather carried 100 years ago. I just found your channel and enjoy the videos I’ve watched so far. My EDC is much like yours but with todays environment I do conceal carry a 9mm. I can’t afford much of what you review but you have given me some good ideas for the future.

    Have used ranger bands for years.
    On my (Kabar) neck knife (kydex sheath) I banded a small backup olight flashlight, ferro rod, titanium whistle, steel awl/scribe.
    I had this setup for a few years now. Works great.
    Also,
    I carry a zippo although I never have smoked.
    To decrease evaporation, I put a rubber plug in the fill slot (Chinese made), and a ranger band around the flip top at the seam as a gasket. This system works fabulously and a fluid fill will easily last 8-10days.

    Good to hear you say what you said about steel types. Glad that you changed your stance. We all like having the best for sure, but honestly I don’t think most use their knives enough to notice. I know I don’t.

    I got into EDC when I was pre-teens. Rode my bicycle everywhere, and I also worked on my grandmother's farm. I learned to carry everything that you might need, because walking half an hour from the feilds to the house to grab an item, then turn around and walk back truly sucked. My car kits, my motorcycle kits, and even rural and urban kits are geared towards anything that I have used or I have wished I had. Not even that many items, but the items that I actually use.

    Great video. It's been a long time since there has been any "Crossover" between communities online due to whatever, and it's great to see the knowledge and understanding that they can bring.
    As irritating as the forum fights over specs, & configurations are, there is an advantage to them. It is the constant tweaking of gear & materials by these types of people that led to the genuinely useful advancements in materials and product. That being said, I usually don't give a toss, and just use what hits all the categories within my budget.

    Interesting points.
    When you spoke about ranger bands and then about your dad improvising anything with what was available at home I remembered suddenly the old saying 'if your tool is a hammer everything looks like a nail'. This is usually meant ironically-negative in a sense that people tend to stay in their box of thinking depending on their tools and try something stupid like trying to hitting a screw in like they would do with a nail or so, or that people unneccessarily use tools simply because they own them or have them at hand. But I took that saying always positive in a sense that exploring the possibilities of a tool increase always your skills and your options of getting things done - with whatever tools you have at your hands. So exploring new tools and methods is always a good thing. And yes it is sometimes stupid but often it works, even putting a screw in with a hammer ;-)
    That is maybe also kind of the core of bushcrafting - you have a very basic set of tools and can do basically everything you want by using natural resources, and mainly your skills. That is very satisfying and helps you to survive in the outdoors. And if you want to learn more about that mind set and the smartest ever use of pocket knives I can highly recommend to watch also the channel of Felix Immler - he can do and fabricate everything based on using a Victorinox.
    And yes, absolutely true - for sure everybody has or has had any kind of EDC, since mankind started. Depending on actual and local needs and traditions, this might be a simple stick (used for digging, hunting, walking etc.) and some fire making device or said MacGyver/Felix Immler Swiss Army knife. Or a lipstick, wet wipes and bandaids. Or a billhook. Whatever it is - we usually carry any stuff with us, nobody goes naked and without anything what he or she thinks might be useful during the day.
    And to come to an end now: during my childhood it was not only usual but even kind of obligatory for boys to always carry four things: a handkerchief, a piece of cordage, matches and a pocket knife. We never carried these things in a bulky set or pouch but just open in our pockets. What was for sure a much better solution than having a pouch or metal container which you cannot simply put in a kid's pockets. And we didn't have youtube or went to any courses but were teached by our granddads how to use a knife or how to tie knots. Good old times ;-)

    "Knowledge weighs nothing" / "The more you know, the less you need to carry" - THAT is probably The Number ONE bit of **invaluable wisdom** anyone would invariably and ultimately benefit from, for as long as one never forgets it! THANK you for sharing that with us all! Brilliant info, excellent video, invaluable content! 👍 Also, RANGER BANDS - a Big, Fat YES!! 👍 I've followed your videos for a while now, and I'm very happy to be your new subscriber - more like this please! 🤘😷

    A random idea.: No clue if something like this exists, but.. A neck knife sized knife with a deep carry pocket clip / Kydex sheath. Ranger band whatever you want to the sheath. Have your small fixed blade at the ready all the time. Only pull the sheath out of your pocket to access your other EDC gear. Great vid. Very enlightening .

    Great info and something to think about. This is similar principle in the Search and Rescue sector. The longer your in the less things they carry outside of the minimums, as they have found alternate uses for the equipment already on them. Instead of carrying 50 extra pounds of things there most likely never going to use.

    Nice video, it is always interesting when I see my worlds collide and see people from one side learning about the other. Steel snobbery is something that shows up online in online buschraft groups but I never hear about it in meetups or classes. I think there is something to be said about that because it just seems like its a universal thing across both the outdoor tool world and the edc world in that most people who talk incessantly about knife steels have very clean and very shiny knives.

    Rangerbands are great and cheap. I use them on gear all the time. My watchband is a leatherman tread and smaller ones fit on it perfectly and hold bits in while covering the hex holes, keeping dirt out. They are decent firestarters too (yup, they burn...its not Trioxane, but it is better than nothing)...if you add a little handsanitizer to get them going they can burn for several mins in pretty iffy conditions.
    Great video. It is always a cool feeling to break through to another level in your passion.

    I agree, I think the EDC online world has become more about Instagramable cool photos and CZcams content vs usefulness. Everyone with matching color everything or themes or the newest EDC Widget which is great and fun as a hobby don't get me wrong. But a friend keeps telling me you need the Knipex pliers for your kit and you need this and that and I'm like no I don't!! As much as I want them, I haven't touched the pliers I have in my kit to date so why would I add more things just that are cool so I have also been rethinking my EDC and VEDC kits as well.

    So very glad that you make the time to go to that Bushcraft Demo Days. It is one of a kind and every year there is always something new, different and encouraging. It does opens & widens your horizon in so many ways. It is amazing what you can take away with you and put it into something you are passionate about. The term "Every Day Carry" use to be call "Every Day Necessities". It is something you must have to survive, to do a job that pay shit wages. To be able to Hunters & Gatherers. I am fortunate to have those items that was handed down, like a knife, a saw & a karambit or sickle. All homemade with low end material, it's either from a saw blade or sleeve spring. It was Mors Kochanski that said those famous words, "The more you know, the less you carry". He was a legend in the bushcraft world. There was a time that I wanted to put in my old carry into your weekly edc theme but was told it was just old cheap stuff by others so never get to do it. No worries. It's all good. Watch your show for a long time now along with three of my girls, and they are really into it as much as they are in bushcraft & survival. It's a thing. Thank you Taylor for making EDC very out there again & as sexy as it could be. Cheers mate. Greetings from Christmas Island.. Stay safe cobber.

    I have a bunch of ranger bands left over from my military days. I found that hair ties are a more common EDC item. Especially with how many women I am around at work.
    One unique piece I saw was someone with a pure silver coin that was about $40. One side flat to be a reflective surface the other side I can't recall

Although I do like a little pocket jewelry, I do not sacrifice the things I believe critical to carry, no matter the circumstance, to get me home. BTW, Craig Caudill is a great resource for knowledge. Grab his books, highly recommended! I also have the very same Kelso Kit strapped (Ranger Bands) to my TOPS Knives Scout, scout-style carry, left front. If you make it down to San Antonio, I'd gladly save you a spot at the fire! Aaron
