  • I interview Paul Morrissey who tells the story of how he got banned from Thailand. Paul had lived in Thailand for a number of years living in Pattaya and Chiangmai. Back in 2020 when he needed a new visa his landlord offered to help him get a Non-immigrant O visa and here's where his problems started. #thairishtimes #expatinthailand #thaivisa

To answer a question Paul asked, the reason they cap the overstay fine to 20k is to give the offender a chance to leave the country. Example: At the rate of 500bt per day, a 3-year overstay would cost half a million baht and there would be thousands of foreigners stuck in jail because they can't pay the fine. Happy to see that Paul avoided doing time in jail.

I'm so possessive of my passport that I can't fathom leaving it with someone who's not an official immigration employee or even visa agency. I had to give my passport for a Cambodian visa extension and I was without my passport for more than a week. I had the agency make a photocopy but it's not the same thing especially in countries like Cambodia and Thailand where there's an obligation to carry your ID on you at all times. Once I had serious trouble getting my card back from a cash machine because I didn't have the passport with me. On top of that I am wary of immigration staff not taking good care of passports. So the fact this guy left his passport with a "friend" and for so long terrifies me 😱

I am thinking of doing a channel and I know as soon AS I start everyone will be screwed because I'm the kiss of death to stocks I buy and careers I start..lol THEY always change the rules by the time I start something new.....lol. heya. thats an unfortunately story. i stayed in thailand for 2.5 years back in 2011. when i was getting an extension very early in the my stay, i was having a smoke outside across the street in jomtien immigration office. a thai immigration officer started talking with me, also having his smoke break. he managed to stamp me up at the office, all official etc every 3 months for approx 2 years with what was a VIP stamp or something back then. when i brought a blue label johhny walker to the office one time as i thank you gesture he got quite worked up about it not being appropriate! he never asked for anything. it was odd. he always asked me to wait no matter when my ticket was called until i could go to HIS desk. all kosher. 2.5 years later i left but didnt get the last 3 months stamped in by him as i got lazy.....had 20k in baht when i was going to airport, no fuss, paid when i walked thru checking in as i was sked to have a chat with some uniformed crew. all smiles, no aggro. no ban. been flying in and out of thailand as usual 3 times a year ever since. im sure things have changed since then but thats my story.

His is a story that can happen to anyone. Back in 1993, a very connected man volunteered to help me with my visa, as he had the right connections. However, he didn't take care of it right away. And as I would ask him about it, he would often tell me to"calm down," or "Chai yen yen." After a few months, he returned my Passport back to me to let me know that I had overstayed and needed to take care of that; and of course, I had overstayed, because of his "being calm," or "Chai yen," about the situation. Due to helping a US Marine in a gang fight, a year prior to that, I called him up; and he pulled some strings for me; so I was able to get that situation resolved without having to pay a big fine or be blacklisted. The connected man had the connections and was wanting to sincerely help me; but sometimes, being "Chai yen yen" can cause a lot of problems.

Some harsh comments here. I actually enjoyed hearing Paul's story and I think the level of detail was required, as it gives insight as to how easy it is to fall into such situations. You'd be surprised at just how many foreign nationals are / have been involved in illegal visa activity without really understanding they are breaking the law. Not so many years ago it was very common for people to pay a fee to a visa agent instead of doing a visa run. The visa agent would take the passport and have it stamped through a dodgy official and sent back, as if you had left and re-entered the country. The agent never tells you it's illegal, only "No problem, I can do for you!" The golden rule is that you don't actually need a visa agent for anything in Thailand. All processes can be done by yourself.

I was in Bangkok in March 2020 on a tourist visa. When COVID struck, we used to check local newspapers to news on visa situation - and there was clarity that tourist visas were extended "until further notice"- and so the next task was to stay abreast with latest developments. Very quickly a facebook group was formed with people in the same situation and people would share the latest news etc. I eventually left at the end of July 2020.
It is astounding that in this day and age of information one would give away their passport to a landlord, knowing everything that you know goes on in Thailand.

Great interview Peter and Paul, I remember Paul from the Live Stream with Dave...that was an interesting stream..haha. They say there are three types of mindsets that people in this world have, 1) people who live in the past 2) people who live in the present & 3) people who live in future. Paul is definitely living in the present and for sure will have some great stories when he gets old. Personally I'm more living in the future (creating a nest egg ) so in 7-8 years time i can switch to the living in the present mindset with my F you money ;) . I did a year in thailand back in 2008 and I fully "living in the present", came home broke with a lot of lifelong memories, it was a great life lesson and not one that I regret. Like the old saying goes "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail". I hope that new job is going well Pete and that dublin commute is not too bad, I dont miss it ;)

Interesting vid. Going from place to place and requesting visas etc its quite common to hand over your passport for the duration of a stay somewhere in Thailand or that they send to get passport stamped, it was in 2004 anyway (this is before camera phones etc) and then you collect it when you're leaving, that being said, this guy is a liability and shouldn't travel, doesn't seem to have his shit together and really struggles to keep focus, something bad could happen to him.

I disagree with the comments calling this interview a waste of time. The rambling was hard to get through but the story was interesting. Paul's an interesting character and for sure has made questionable decisions, but it takes all sorts of people and as an expat who has returned home (but still misses Thailand every day), it's nice to hear about where other expats have taken their lives after leaving the land of smiles. Keep the interviews coming Pete and good luck with your new job.

Paul's getting a lot of negative feedback and I wonder if it's envy over his confidence and how his happy-go-lucky attitude got his money and passport back. Pete, a few times it crossed my mind during the video that you didn't want to hear Paul's story....

This guy is sketchiest as they come. So sketchy, a good re-write for the video is after the first few minutes to start a 45 second FADE TO: only a dotted line outline of his form against a grey background...and him waving his arms, taking swigs of his drink, and rambling on incoherently. Then we CUT TO: a close up of Pete twiddling his thumbs. (This seems to go on excruciatingly long but is really a mere 30 seconds). Then, we CUT TO: random stock videos of illegal aliens running across rivers, crossing through jungle, in near complete darkness. These can be easily accessed from American news media, where they abound. Then we hear Pete's 50% Guinness-induced hangover voice saying he apologizes for his lack of foresight but he has forgotten to charge the batteries on his camera, his computer, his phone and neglected to pay his wifi bill, so unfortunately this video will be a short one. But in the odd world in which we live, this oversight serves to save us listeners about 90% of the remainder of the video. And we all live a little more happily.
