    John Gibbons is a registered Osteopath, Lecturer and Author and is discussing how to assess the Hamstrings, semitendinosous and the biceps femoris as well as the Gatrocnemius & Soleus muscle in combination with the hamstrings and to differentiate from the Talocrural joint - ankle joint. John then shows you how to treat these muscles using muscle energy techniques (METS). These are taught on his courses based at the University of Oxford.
    John is also the Author of the highly successful book and Amazon No 1 best seller called 'Muscle Energy Techniques, a practical guide for physical therapists'. John has also written 3 more books, one is called 'A Practical Guide to Kinesiology Taping' and comes with a complimentary DVD. The other books are called; 'Vital Glutes, connecting the gait cycle to pain and dysfunction' and 'Functional Anatomy of the Pelvis and SI joint'.
    All the books are available to buy now through his website www.johngibbons...... or from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk
    John now offers Advanced Training in all aspects of Sports Medicine to already qualified therapists in manual therapy to 'Diploma' Level. You need to have attended all of his ten individual Therapy Courses before the diploma is awarded. His venue is based at the idylic venue of Oxford University, home of the first four-minute mile by Roger Bannister.

    According to your experience how long this new ' muscle elongation' can last? Is it just for a short time?

    • @JohnGibbons
      @JohnGibbons  Před 2 lety +3

      Hard to comment as depends on the patient - lifestyle, work, exercise etc as tissues can easily shorten again, regards JG

    Can tight hamstrings cause patella maltracking? I get lots of crunching noise when straightening my leg when lying on my back like the woman in my video.

      It can indeed as the hamstrings act as a brake for when you extend the leg, get someone to check for you. regards JG

    so if the leg can get to 90 degrees theres no need to use MET as it would not be classed as tight? thanks in advance

    • @JohnGibbons
      @JohnGibbons  Před 4 lety +3

      thats correct - if 90 degrees of hip flexion then normal ROM so no need to lengthen the hamstrings, regards JG

    Thank you for uploading educative nd informative video .....if there is muscle stiffness ,is it normal to stretch it nd then strengthening?or is it a must that the muscle stiffness completely resolve nd then start strengthening?waiting for your reply

    • @JohnGibbons
      @JohnGibbons  Před 4 lety +5

      Every joint has a natural range of motion and if it is unable to achieve this then the muscle might be the restrictive factor so worth looking at stretching techniques. If the joint has normal or excessive range then worth strengthening and no stretching is required. regards JG

    at 40 sec mark you said if the patient cant get to 90/90 at knee and ankle then both are tight. Is that correct?

    • @JohnGibbons
      @JohnGibbons  Před 3 lety +2

      If they get the leg and ankle to 90 degrees then that is normal range of motion for the hamstrings and gastrocnemius, regards JG

    The semis function is medial rotation and hip extension so why externaly rotate and Abduct to see for Resistance ? Do we check the OPPOSITE function to see for restriction ?? Confused -_-
    Thank you in advance John.

    • @JohnGibbons
      @JohnGibbons  Před 3 lety +1

      The hip is already in flexion so pre tensions the hamstrings then adding in external rotation with abduction increases the tension of the medial hamstrings and if the muscle group is shortened (as compared to other side that you tested initially) then you can see the limitation. regards JG
