I did a biography on Neil back in elementary school. While I doubt my preteen research is representative of the total story. Neil lost his daughter and was lost in life. Even after the Apollo mission reached the moon, he never was one who sought the public eye, he didn't really want fame. By all accounts Neil Armstrong was just a dude, a dude whose life was in tangles and was searching for new meaning. Thats why I think he was perfect to be the first man. He wasn't some larger than life figure, he didn't want to be on a pedestal, he was just like you or me. I think he just wanted a new reason to think of the world positively. And doing what by all accounts was and probably still is the greatest feat in human history, I think he gained faith in all of humanity that day. The people who got him there, the people who made the parts, the people who fought for the funding.

he seemed detached from the rest of the world, which in a way is poetic, seeing as he was one remembered in history as the first man on the mooon
