PONYO LOVES HAM: When Meme Meets Theme

- PONYO LOVES HAM! PONYO LOVES SOSUKE! Ponyo is pure joy. Miyazaki's strange take on the Little Mermaid fable is largely considered one of his lesser works, but those people are WRONG. In this video I break down how the fun meme/rallying cry for Ponyo fans, "Ponyo loves ham" is actually perfectly representative of the exact thing that makes Ponyo such a joy to watch. MEME MEETS THEME, BABY. PONYO PONYO PONYO FISHY IN THE SEA!

HAHAHA Oh man, and I didn't watch the Power Rangers till we went to that screening in 2017....... some of it does not hold up.
Dude, the movie versus the TV show was night and day. The movie is acted FAR better. Think about that for a moment.
When I discovered my girlfriend hadn't seen a single Studio Ghibli movie, I showed her Ponyo first. It's now probably our favorite movie to watch together and we have since gone through almost the entire Ghibli collection! I would love to see more videos on these movies, great work as always 👍
It's my family's favorite film, but my daughter was very much like Ponyo as a toddler.
personally i dont think ponyo is lesser than any other ghibli movie, it definitely has a simpler storyline and is more geared for a younger audience but still its a beautiful film
True! It’s seeing the world in the eyes of a child ❤
Mei from Totoro: "who are you?"
Ponyo: "i'm you but cuter"
I love this video as much as Ponyo loves ham. Totally captured what makes this film special.
I always thought it was silly for people to not think this was as good as Miyazaki's other movies, because he's at his best when he's showing the slice of life moments, and despite the fantasy elements, this is a sweet little fable about friendship and family, in the same vein as Totoro. Plus the underwater animation is some of the best you'll ever see; the real world always looks so dull after watching this lol
I have seen this movie at least 8 times, every time I watch it I cry joyous tears, for real. It takes me back to an age of wonder and happiness that is so hard to feel nowadays.
Ponyo will always be my most favorite movie ever.
Spirited Away (as well as most other Ghibli movies, Ponyo included, but Spirited Away most of all) is that movie for me. I must have seen it a million times, and I tear up every single time. I feel like I fall in love with it more and more each time.
@@efoxkitsune9493 Exactly! I am so happy that more and more people are discovering Ghibli recently.
I love Ponyo as much as she loves ham. Ponyo was one of the first movies I remember seeing in theaters and I now have a Ponyo face mask.
I remember thinking, "isnt she a fish?! when she ate ham 😂
ponyo loves...revolution
you actually changed my mind about this movie. from other ghibli flicks, i went in expecting to be hooked more by the story or character conflict and ponyo and sousuke are too young for that. but it does have its strong points and i missed that parallel with the tea and the potions
PONYO LOVES HAM
Ponyo is my favorite film period... thanks for helping put why into words.
Petition for Ponyo 2 guys this movie really needs a sequel
Watching that movie while being high was the best idea ever :D taking a shower afterwards was like being a fish
Lmao
i watched ponyo when i was 6 or 7 i thought this was a fever dream and turns out it was real
I started tearing up when you mentioned Ponyo being the last fully 2D animated Ghibli film
Grew up watching Ghibli films, Ponyo was one of my dads favourites and anytime I start to miss him I turn on Ponyo on the same DVD he bought when I was a kid ♥️
This is really what I needed after a tough session with my therapist; a video from one of the greatest, talking about my favorite Miyazaki movies. ❤
Wolf Children makes me happy
This is one of those movies I watched as a little kid and have zero recollection of what it was about, but still have nostalgia for.
ponyo is my favorite ghibli film. i grew up in florida and the scene with ponyo and sosuke riding out the storm in their cozy house really reminds me of the storms and hurricanes i experienced as a kid. the little lamp, the darkness outside caused by the storm, it really hits home for me. it’s my go to movie when i’m sad and it always makes me feel so much better 🥺❤️
I literally agree with everything you said. All my friends say Ponyo is the worst Ghibli film, but I say it’s one of the best
You just tell all your friends that Ponyo loves ham
Johnny 2 Cellos you bet I will
You need new friends
Thanks for posting this! Ponyo is my favorite Ghibli film too, and watching this made me like it even more XD
Ponyo loves ham!!
Seeing these tidbits of Ponyo brings a childlike wonder to me. I think I might appreciate Ponyo more as an adult because of the sad horrible reality of adulthood (plus the world currently burning). I know for sure I didn't appreciate it when I watched it as a (an albeot edgelord) teen. I'm gonna give this a watch again
Love this new vid, I think Ghibli in general is really good at showing a lot but giving few answers in a way that always felt natural and reasonable to me...Like in Howls Moving Castle there's this massive war going on, but we know so little about it overall and it's because Sophie your average citizen isn't privy to or always focused on the war and I always liked that, I feel like if it was a more westernised Hollywood film there would be a big shift of focus onto the war being fought instead of the magic, the individual, and the love story at the core of the film
This was my first Studio Ghibli movie as a kid. Little did I know that this would open a rabbit hole that I won’t ever forget. That’s where my love for the studio began: with a little fish who loves ham and adores Sosuke as well.
This video essay made me very happy. I love when people bring up a perspective of a movie or TV show I've seen that made them love it.
What a wonderful video.
Spirited Away is my favorite film of all time.
this was one of the first ghibli movies i'd watched as a kid, along with my neighbor totoro, and while now my absolute favorite is howl's moving castle, this movie will always make me nostalgic, just due to the beauty and wonder that you can easily enjoy, and it really let's you feel like a kid again and not worry , at least for a little while
Ponyo was my first ghibli movie and will forever hold a special place in my heart ❤️
Ok I've watched you at your Ponyo can we see you at your Nausica now? ❤
I think my neighbor Totoro is my joyful then ponyo my favorite of this flims
Best ghibli film, a constant grounding factor as a single father and it pretty much makes me cry every fucking time ❤️ when I go I will be buried with a copy of this film
man I love your channel
Only two videos in and I'm glad I found your channel.
i would LOVE to see you cover more ghibli content!!! keep it up!
LMAO you made your brother smash the Power Rangers DVD...you are the best, Johnny! Nice to see some Studio Ghibli content on the channel
youre so good with words. i never knew why i love ponyo so much but now i do
Thank you! I'm proud of this video and was sad it didn't get as much attention haha, I appreciate this comment a lot
Ponyo is as of right now the first and only ghibli film Ive seen, my step mother introduced it to me and it made me fall in love with all things fish, my favorite places to go is aquariums and the beach, and I have fish tanks in my house, still searching for a fish that has a persons face though, however they all love ham
I loooove Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and When Marnie Was There - I'd love for you to do a commentary on one of those! :D
Princess Mononoke needs to be on that list too. Here is an odd one for that list, Porco Rosso. Miyazaki seems to have a love for flying. It comes in time and time again, in movie after movie.
I find it amazing how he makes so many great films, and I can't really think of any actual villains in any of them.
This movie was my childhood love this movie!
2:20 "Their world is small." Well yeah ponyo is trapped in her own little bubble.
Ps: Ponyo loves ham.
Really underrated movie
I love this video. I think you captured the essence of the movie perfectly. Man, I love your video essays. Keep up the great work!
And yes, I'll always be down for more Ghibli analyses if you choose to make them!
Sidenote: 5:50 _Man,_ that came out of left field! I hope you and your brother are doing fine! Lmao
Oh we’re totally fine 😂 that was like, 16 years ago? We actually went to see MMPR the Movie at a special theatrical screening and met a bunch of the cast a few years ago
@@Johnny2Cellos Oh that's awsome! Haha. All the best man!
I love all Miyazaki movies but my favourite will forever be Howl's Moving Castle ♥️
imho
howls is my favorite
princess mononoke is the best
ponyo is the happiest
I’m obsessed with Ponyo, it’s my favorite movie
3:08 would have been a perfect time for him to say "Ponyo is literally a fish out of water"
It FUCKING brings a tear to my eye
i remember almost nothing from ponyo and i somehow completely removed her father existing from my head but all i really do remember is i watched it as a kid and really liked it. i want to watch it again but its not on netflix anymore so i dont have any way to watch it other than scouring for a sketchy download
Ponyo is so precious ♥️
I watched Miyazaki films growing up. I still have them on DVD.
I never _disliked_ Ponyo, but it was further down the list in terms of my favorites. Though, I never understood _why._ It just never really seemed to "click" with me like the other films, even though I had seen them all from a young age.
Watching the film, I could never really tell what exactly it was about. It was like... nonsense for me, almost. Meaningless nonsense, it felt like. If you had asked me what Ponyo was about, I would have fumbled for an answer. And I never managed to figure out why on my own.
To learn that the meaning of this film is all about experiencing things for the first time and that whole aspect of "childlike wonder"... that knowledge kind of depresses me, admittedly.
Throughout childhood, I spent the vast majority of my free time alone in my room. Times I spent with others were mundane, repetitive, and lacked any substantial meaning. I actually changed friends frequently, 'cause it ultimately didn't matter exactly who it was. I didn't really form any bonds - it was always just a means of diversion.
And yes, I experienced new things at a normal rate. But very little of it actually surprised or amazed me. I feel like the things that gave me that sense were things that I discovered on my own during all that time I spent alone in my room. Conceptual things, mostly coming from literature like Miyazaki-san's movies.
I feel like my inner world was always colorful, while the outside world was always bleak and sad. All my moments of joy and discovery came from being alone, while all my painful experiences came from having to face reality.
I guess, from that perspective, it makes sense why I never felt any sort of semblance with Ponyo, huh? The thought of being presented with a wonderful, exciting new reality just wasn't ever something I could relate to. ^^'
...also, I never liked ham.
Ok, watching the movie made me happy, but I never understood why! Thanks for the video! HAAAAAM!!!
I dont have a puppy named Ponyo, but i do have a cat named Sosuke because of this movie
I love Ponyo, I watch Ponyo when I was a kid and I enjoyed it.
I definitely need to watch this movie now while eating ham!
This video summarized how i felt as a kid when i watched this movie
"When you boil down Ponyo Loves Ham to what it represents in this film" oh no he's an English Teacher
Ponyo is amazingly wholesome. One film that could rival it though is definitely Mirai. That's the cheer-up movie for me. If you haven't seen it you definitely should.
Who made that one?
I saw this movie with a friend and we were super confused. Then again we were like 7.
This was ✨✨✨✨✨✨
The next time somebody tells you that they don't like ponyo , just tell them one thing , ponyo loves ham , love that brother good job UWU 💕
Ponyo is pure adorableness
Would love one on The Wind Rises
just as amazing of a video, 1/100th of the viewership because the algorithm doesnt wanna let you do non BH stuff, shame
I'LL BREAK THE ALGORITHM ONE DAY! It does seem like the BoJack stuff is the only stuff that is guaranteed to break through, but I've had success with other adult animated series as well. Really hoping that a Ghibli or Avatar video will get some hits and help push my catalog into the algorithm. We'll see! The plan is to keep analyzing the stuff I want to analyze while also periodically doing BoJack breakdowns to keep overall viewership up.
@@Johnny2Cellos I think most of us would love more Ghibli. Also regarding the algorithm, it was Fry and Leela who led me to you channel, quite randomly too.
I agree with you 100% I think this is one of his greatest works. My wife and kids agree.
Please review Spirited Away next
🌊
I love this movie and my kids loves this movie too we love Ponyo ❤❤❤💙💙💙
Omg I love ham 🤩
PONYO LOVES HAM PONYO LOVES SOSUKE
Ponyo want's haaaaaam
Your point is valid, but I think the thing about Ponyo was the same thing all these movies had. It always felt like there was something else not shown in the movie that they refuse to look twords or focus on that I want to see. I think the only movie that didn't give me that feeling was Kiki's delivery service. I do think it's fair that some of it is cultural stuff, like a movie America might make will show stuff culturally that other people would be confused about, like...anything in Spirited Away.
Who killed Captain Alex
Does Ponyo have meme-potential?
The only movie that's more joyful than Ponyo is Totoro
My daughter was straight up Ponyo as a toddler. She looked like her, spoke like her, stood like her, ran like her, and shouted ham like her.
After she got a little older we watched it with her and she fell in love with the movie.
Also as a kid I did the bathroom thing too. I was really young and couldn't read. A classmate tricked me into it.
hahahahahahah ponyo
Do you actually play cello?
I don't! It's because my actual last name sounds like "Pair of cellos" hence "2 cellos"
@@Johnny2Cellos ohhh, ouch
Haha, sorry to be a disappointment
@@Johnny2Cellos aw maaaan. You. Are. Not. I still adore your film and show analyses
Wilber better stay away from her.....

Thanks for commenting!
Thats not his mom its his sister
No it’s his Mom lol he just calls her by her first name
@@Johnny2Cellos Just wait for the prequel, Ponyo 2: Roswell That Ends Well.
Amelie is happiness and whimsy incarnate, and now it's dubbed in English so you won't have to struggle translating the rapid-fire French. But Ponyo was terrifying in certain regards; the world was literally ending around those children and because they were so young, I'm not sure they grasped the gravity of the situation. It was yet another of Miyazaki's heavy handed and rightfully deserved focal points for environmentalism. Seeing just as "Ponyo loves Ham" is fine if you're a child, but otherwise, you are downright ignoring Miyazaki's message of preserve the earth...the dude started a nature preserve for a reason.
I’m not ignoring anything. The focal point of this video, and why I think Ponyo is so great, is the sense of childlike wonder. Just because I’m analyzing that specific aspect of the film doesn’t mean other aspects of the film don’t exist. There’s plenty more to analyze, even outside of the environmental ideas. I think Nausicaa and Mononoke do a much more thorough job of showcasing environmental issues. While Ponyo touches on those things, it hardly makes them a focal point. The storm and flood aren’t presented as terrifying, and they’re also shown to specifically be a result of Ponyo’s own magic. Embracing “Ponyo loves ham” is fine for anybody. You can embrace that aspect of the film AND appreciate other messages and themes. This video focused on this aspect.
@@Johnny2CellosPonyo is adorable as hell, but I could barely get into it. Princess Mononoke screams the message more, but I guess I lumped it into the environmentalist discussion because it is not his Miyazaki's strongest work
I think it’s fine if ya couldn’t get into it. Personally, I think it does stand amongst his strongest work. This stuff is subjective.
