    As an SPD-SX owner, I can say although it's an older model, it's a tank, tried and tested - really reliable. It's a shame Roland haven't updated the PC/Mac management software. Also for the more adventurous, you can do a memory upgrade of the SD card inside the unit. There are YT videos explaining how. If you have basic computer skills and can use a screw driver, you can do it. Just take your time 🙏

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 5 lety +1

      If you want to use the SPD-SX to control Ableton, or some kind of other program, you would need a MIDI cable. That the question?
      To use the Roland onboard sample function you need a 1/4" cable.

    Hey man thanks for the info! Im currently thinking of buying one and wrestling with the questions of 1. Can I get by without having an SPD right now. (Yes) . 2. Would this piece of gear allow me to play more/more types of gigs (maybe) haha. I think it would definitely be an investment though!

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 5 lety +3

      For question 2 - I think that all depends on the music culture where you are. But I would say too many drummers aren't using their SPD-SX enough. I use it on all my "acoustic gigs". Instead of playing cajon I bring the SPD-SX. So, it might apply to more situations than ya think when you get one and start messing around with it.

  • @elliotjackson8321
    @elliotjackson8321 Před 4 lety +1

    DI's are useful to have in general, but you can save some money by getting two 1/4 inch (male) to xlr (male) cables. Then you can just plug straight into board (or snake).

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 4 lety +2

      Agreed. However, DIs can sometimes solve problems as they typically have pad switches and ground flip switches that can be super useful depending on what you are running through them and the power at the venue you are playing at.

    Pro tip: on stage, make it a rule to use DIs - a stereo one or dual mono. Passive DIs are absolutely fine. AVOID using a balanced cable with XLRs straight from the SPD-SX. You can try that in an enviroment that has a fantastic electrical setup, no noise in the power outlets. Stage enviroments RARELY have that and the DIs will help if the electricity is lacking.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes! I get this some times. Usually (for me) it means the bit rate is too high. Samples for the Roland SPD-SX have to be .WAV or AIFF files that are 16-bit with a sample rate of 44.1kHz. You can throw your samples into iTunes and then covert them (or reconvert them) to .wav files in iTunes and that always does the trick for me.

  • @janpeet1
    @janpeet1 Před 2 lety +1

    Dear Tim,
    We use the SPD-SX with my band for the samples and sound effects but also for it's metronome like a clicktrack. The whole band is hooked up. BUT we have one issue. All clicks, beeps, tweeps etc in the SPD-sx metronome sound a like. With other digital metronomes you have a higher pitch for the "1" and than 3, mostley lower pitched sounds for the "2, 3 and 4"
    Problem is without the higher pitched "1" either one of us loses track of the count not knowing where the "1" is. This occurs mainly passing breaks, fills or any other changement in the song.
    And well... that sucks.
    Do you have tips how to insert a click/ metronome sounds where the "1" is higher pitched?

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 2 lety

      Hey! So, to my knowledge, you can't change the internal click sounds that come with the SPD. So if you aren't happy with any of those, I would recommend just uploading .wav files of click track sounds you want to use on the gig. That way you can design the click track loop in a DAW and make sure the click sounds exactly like you want and just export a bunch of copies of those sounds at whatever tempos you need.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 3 lety

      Hey Doug! Check out my playlist for SPD-SX because one of them does include the "loading samples onto the pad" in it somewhere.
      As for the not being able to clear a pad issue - it might be that the pad has a "sub sound" that you need to clear out. All the pads in an SPD-SX have a "main sample" and then a "sub sample". I've had moments where I changed the sample but was still hearing some other sample and it was because there was a "sub sample "assigned to the pad as well as a main pad.
      Hopefully that stuff helps!

    Have you ever had issues with volume at live gigs? i notice from several different gigs i play, the signal from the roland is weak

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 5 lety

      Ah, yes - this can be an issue. Generally it isn't, but every now and then you run into that where they can't gain it up enough from FOH or the DI is causing noise and gaining it up is a problem.
      To fix it:
      1. Always make sure you are trying to bounce out the sounds you use as loud as possible. If you are using sounds that are low volume that will always make this issue more likely.
      2. If gaining up the pad at FOH is creating a bunch of ground hum or buzzing, you can ask them to try and use a noise gate to remove that noise when youa aren't playing the pad.
      Sometimes it comes down to the sound system being limited or the sound engineer not knowing how to problem solve. But those things might help next time.

    • @starterrn
      @starterrn Před 5 lety +1

      @@TimBuell thanks! I've been thinking of just bringing a small mixer to gigs to help boost the signal that im feeding them. Alot of my samples are song intro's and low end bass drops. Not sure if it will cause more noise though.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 5 lety

      @@starterrn Those mixers will only be able to push out as much gain as the sound board would be able to, and typically low end mixers have a TON of noise. If it is a huge problem you can get something like the Radial McBoost (an active DI) that has the ability to gain up the signal. That DI is $200 but the signal from it is SUPER clean. Just need to convert your signal from 1/4" to XLR to get into the DI which you can do with a converter or build your own cable.

    • @TimBuell

      Great question. On stage, if you are playing a full production show and they "black out" between songs for the intro of the next song or something. Without a little bit of tape that has some sort of color your pad just disappears. There is also a setting that leaves all the SPD lights on all the time. That is another good option to pair with the tape.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  Před 3 lety

      dayjoborchestra I’ve found snares stands rarely go as high as needed for the height I like on the SPD. As well, even if you find a snare stand that will get the pad up high enough, the stand is usually very easy to tip over because the stand is extended so high. I also like to sometimes had the pad where my rack Tom usually goes and the stand I show in this video is often easier to place than a snare stand. Especially on gigs where backline is provided and I don’t have my drums/hardware.

      @@dayjoborchestra That's a great question. I don't believe there is. You might be able to do that on a Roland Octapad (but don't quote me on that) - and if you use the SPD to trigger Ableton Live you can do it. But I don't believe you can do it with the SPD-SX alone.
