    I'm suffering from GAS constantly... I mean, I have a pair of Austrian Audios 0C18 for my overheads, which are kinda 414 type and they are pretty good. But I'm always thinking "maybe a tube mic will be even better?" It drives me nuts... Your videos shows greatly, that the differences aren't that big but you and other guys telling that the processing after tracking are showing the real differences...

    I love the quest people had over this very sound. It reminds me when I used a couple hours of lonely night remembering the "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast" series had one of its outro indents who mystified me: The Williams Street logo. It sounded like something industrial with an ominous humming. Seeing this indent as a child, late at night, lights off and alone was unnerving to me. I had to dig deeper. I did eventually find the Jack Webb's "Mark VII Limited" indent with the hand hammering the logo away (the real source of the sound). Sometimes, some strange things like these sounds: they mark us in a way not many things could.

    e kits look so small. Any recommendations for tall people in the $1k to $2k options? I surprised that the don't look like they have height options.

      Hey, I've had 4 E-kits over the years, my solution were table raisers I bought off amazon. Being 6'1 they really help out

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell Před 5 dny

      With some of the newer kits that use actual drum shells I think it makes it a bit easier to get a "normal" height out of the kits - but it is hard to get them set up exactly like acoustic kits for sure.

    • @jamessullenriot
      @jamessullenriot Před 2 dny

      Get a kit where you can ditch the racks, or you could easily do an acoustic to electric conversion kit for under 2k. 65 drums channel can guide you in the right direction for the conversion option

  • @titusbrown2651
    @titusbrown2651 Před 8 dny

    Great video as usual Tim. As someone who practices exclusively on an EKit, there is nothing better you can do than adjusting the sensitivity of the drum heads like you mentioned. Dialing in your snare pad is especially important as it will help replicate the feel of ghost notes, AND more importantly, a correctly sensitive EKit will reduce fatigue that often correlates to EKit practice. Finally, it may also be a good idea to buy a drum brain that is decent, but not top of the line, and invest $120 in some drum software like EZDrummer. From my experience the brains just don’t emulate real drums as well as I’d like, but there is fantastic software available at all different price points.

    I’d recommend a keyboard amplifier for e-kits if you want to play out loud. They have the broad frequency range you talk about and are often neutral in colour.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell Před 8 dny

      That's a good tip! Just like you said - really anything that has broad frequency range will work.

    • @phoibos_1
      @phoibos_1 Před 8 dny

      I have to disagree with that. You need something that has an impulse response that is sufficient for e.g. a kick drum. Frequency response is typically measured by sweeping a sine wave across the frequency band. That’s fairly similar to playing 88 keys up and down 😊 But drums create sharp impulses, resulting in a broad frequency response. Recreating that impulse requires a lot of momentary electric energy to be delivered by the amp and turned into acoustic pressure by the speaker(s). Keyboard amps might be able to do that but it’s not their purpose. But a good drum amp is purposefully built to do just that.

At times charts are open charts, big band charts as well like more of open bars, but at times, im struggling with writing the rhythm, I can properly read notes on the chart but writing at times, I get rhythms mixed up😅. Great video. I thought the KM184s came out on top. Very smooth/ balanced/ natural across the frequency spectrum. Slightly less lows compared to some others, but nothing some close mics/ EQ couldn't handle. There was too much "sandiness" and harshness in the transients in the SE8s (and muddiness in the bottom?) for me to consider them a viable alternative. Agree the WA-67s are very good as well. Play-out sounded HUGE and I had to ask - what is your signal chain on the play-out?? Would love to get close to that sound one day!! Cheers.

    From my experience as someone who did work in audio in early 2000's I started in Logic, then got a job in a ProTools shop so I switch both at work and home to Protools. I left audio and now retired and doing audio again because I've been in and around music all my life. From my viewpoint Logic (and Cubase) were mainly used by composer types doing TV/Film/Media work. ProTool is mainly used by engineer who came from more traditional studio work, ones like me who go back to analog days. Now Ableton Live is new to me I started learning it as my DAW to return to audio with and from what I experienced so far it is focused on performance use be that EDM, or even playback engineers for concerts. Now I have started to look again at Logic and probably will try ProTools again. I find Ableton has a steep learning curve it's interfaces can be hard learn. Some people I find liking it for more traditonal work don't use the Session view unless absolutely necessary. I like Ableton MIDI capabilities, not a fan of it for mixing, I like the routing and how I can create effects and drum racks. Getting back to Logic has been easy in general, but I don't like Logic version of Ableton Session view for create music cells and triggering for live use. ProTools I haven't loaded it up yet, but doing my research it has changed some but not a lot, so it shouldn't be too hard for getting back up to speed. Now for the type of music I want to work on Logic or Ableton would probably better suited, but ProTools can do it, but doesn't have as many built in tools. Price Logic is best bang for the buck they tools, instruments, and loops it comes with are very good. Ableton similar to Logic close to same as far as tools, instruments, and loops but I think Logic's are a little bit better in general. Ableton has a lot of pricing tiers not as cheap as Logic but not too much more either. ProTool is expensive (and its Avid) it has some good tools, but form what I see ProTools users are using a lot 3rd party plugins, instruments, and etc compared to Logic or Ableton. I'll add a category and that is education. Ableton and ProTools both have a lot of online classes available. Logic I don't see as much. So that's my view coming back to audio as an old head.

      It was a fun gateway project. Gonna turn a bunch of other speakers into mics now haha.

    Wonderful for character. A little tricky with the phase (in my opinion) to other mics sometimes, but freaking lovely for the vibe!

      Yeah. Phase can be tricky for it, I think it's kinda about committing to what it is going to mask and just rolling with it in a way haha. Not sure how often I'll use this thing for drums but I desperately want to try it on a guitar amp.

      @@TimBuell True! Compression and Texture tools could work with it quite well...or as (second) knee mic in-between the drums could be badass. Maybe super useful for LoFi-Beats...
