So I don't know if you will read this Ian. I started playing bass in grade 7 (I'm 46). Stopped for 25 years. SBL showed up in my feed and your energy and love for the bass brought me back. Thank you
Me too! Began at 12 and stopped about 24. I’m 46 and picked it back up again and am having so much fun! And driving my husband crazy because I keep making him listen to all the bass lines that get me jazzed over and over again.
Thank you for bringing such joy into so many people’a lives - including mine! You’re one of my favorite bassists - kind of take me back to Le Chic as a child in the 70s.
I play bass in a rock/metal band - and I love this song and in particular the bass line - you killed it, not too much, not too busy, just funky as hell!
That pre chorus part is actually hard. The whole song's dealing with mainly straight eights then suddenly hits you with that off beat with pops. Insane.
I saw another video of someone breaking down this killer bass line, and saw several comments about how they’d like it if it “wasn’t Lizzo”. People suck out loud. It’s a great bass line and a catchy tune over all.
@@omcorc What the hell. I would very much like these people to explain exactly what it is about Lizzo that precludes them liking it. They need to own exactly whatever bigotries they're holding onto. (Lizzo is awesome!)
Love love love!!! The bass line in this track is killer, and yet so simple. No blazingly fast runs, arpeggios or fancy tricks... Just good old fashioned groove in the pocket!!! Great energy on this from you as always Ian and shout out to Sharon's vid edit. Dope!!
My first time hearing this song was when it was performed on SNL with Lizzo doing double duty. My first instinct was it reminded me of “Good Times”, but what sent the performance over the top for me was that they leaned into Bernard Edward’s bass line during the breakdown later in the song. Fun song to play. Also, the guitarist remaining in the pocket to allow the bass to shine is always appreciated.
When my band wanted to put this on the playlist, I knew I had some work to do. Sure was a tricky one to learn, but once I got it down I couldn't stop playing it! Great video. Thank you.
Grabbed my Fender Ultra V and fired up my 225W valve amp just to jam on this song the other day! I don't listen to Lizzo much but these select hits stick in your ear for a long time!
This is a great bass line and you delved into it perfectly! What a hell of a bassist you are Ian! A great lesson on how a bass line should be closely listened to and then reproduced! Thank you!! As an "ancient and seasoned" bass player i always try to stick to these rules!
Love this series, Ian! As a suggestion for another deep dive, how about Me'Shell Ndegéocello? The hardest part will be picking which of her songs to dig into; you can pretty much drop the needle on anything from _Plantation Lullabies_ or _Peace Beyond Passion_ and hit an unbelievable bass line. But I might suggest "I'm Diggin You (Like an Old Soul Record)", if only for the section where she has overlapping bass parts. It's just killer.
Had to take a series of flights in January and safe to say this was the only song I listened to the whole time. That bass line held on tight to my ears and I knew I had to master it. Safe to say I’m 80% there. Felt so good pointing along to those Easter eggs
Such a great video. I love your energy! Really awesome to see and hear you with a Mike Lull in your hands. The perfect bass for this tune and vibe! (And spending a few minutes with you and Spencer was an absolute highlight at NAMM. Thank you!)
What a lovely breakdown of the whole song..... Getting into the intricacies and details of the bass lines bit by bit, which I think I would've honestly missed by ear. Thank you for enlightening this particular song and the beauty of this composition. ❤
Fantastic funky bass line. I played bass many years ago. I watch these videos because I get caught up in your enthusiasm - and that may well get me back playing again.
It's about damn time you did this song! Loved your comments about "producer bass." I've always been able to pick that out by ear but never had a good term for it. Thx for adding to my bass vocabulary!
I thought the same thing when I first heard that song, Wow! That Bass line is all that! I got home and looked up the song on You Tube and played it like 10 times! Go Lizzo! Dope Song!
I can’t believe you are playing a Mike Lull bass! Mike was my guitar tech for many many years here in the Seattle area until his unfortunate passing a few years ago. Fantastic guy. Fantastic tech. And a fantastic builder. He is missed. Thanks Ian!
Dudes yes! I remember seeing her perform this live on SNL and it was the first time I’d heard it. I thought it was just a “live” arrangement for the show and I immediately pulled the studio track and got stoked as hell on the bassline. Learned it that night
This bassline is amazing and you can't listen to or play it without making bass face . On top of the the tone is freaking perfect. It shakes the house. This song is a bass masterpiece, especially if you love funk. It's just dirty bass.
Great great bass line, and, as always great great dissection and analysis of the song! Thanks Ian again for inspiring us bassists on listening to great songs (even those I hadn’t listened to ever).
Yes yes .... I totally agree the very first time I heard the track by lizzo on the radio all I heard was the bass. Absolutely unreal. Got to say your bass sounds killer there also. I soooo love the mix in this song her voice is so crisp and clean and the bass just perfects the track. You hit the nail on the head here. 💯👌😎
Yeah that was good. Sometimes you think you are doing okay at bass and then see someone just blow you out of the water. But it just pushes you to learn more and practice.
Hey Ian, Great content as per usual. As an ‘old timer’ who was also there in the thick of it, cutting my teeth on these foundation classic tunes when they were first hitting the clubs and the airwaves, I’m surprised that i have never heard anybody reference Christmas Rappin’ by Kurtis Blow which was the first Xmas rap record to be released and was ‘kinda’ in the vein of Rappers Delight, but not, as the featured Bassist/Producer had the presence of mind to be creative with the Bass line whilst keeping the groove more simple, which imho, Queen used a combination of both Basslines to create ‘Another one bites the dust’ - check em out for yourselves and see what you and Scott think.
I've heard a couple of times little part of the song and I didn't really pay attention to it. Now, I think it's a gem ! Ian, thank you for you energy and for this superb content ^^. SBL, YOU ROCK !
You’re doing great (and your duo channel appearances are also fabulous). More, your enthusiasm is infectious and your attention to detail keeps me from getting disgusted, the way I get with more-superficial YT channels. As for the LIzzo, I wish they had worked more on the lyrics. That’s a common issue, hitting a lot of artists. The music is, however, first-rate stuff for the genre, and the bass part is as good as you say. Superlatives aside, it’s really good, and well worth learning why it works as well as it does. Good choice. Thank you.
